吉祥寺 小笹の羊羹 Yokan, sweet bean past jelly, of Ozasa in Kichijyoui

吉祥寺の小さなお店、小笹。ここの羊羹、美味しくて値ごろも手頃ということで、一度食べてみたいと思っていたのですが、1日150本の限定販売で、早朝から並ぶ必要があり、今までは断念していました。

A “Yokan”, sweet bean past jelly, of a small Japanese sweet shop Ozasa, is famous of excellent taste and reasonable price, located in Kichijyoji, and I was wondering to buy it someday. But, since it is sold in limited number, 150 peaces in one day, and necessary to join to a queue from early morning, I had no chance to buy it.

今回は、友達の家でのパーティへの手土産のため、思い切って買ってみることにしました（7月29日土曜日）。店の前についたのが、5時半少し前、常連のおじさんに並ぶ場所を教えてもらい、順番を聞くと21番とのこと。買えるのが一人3個までなので、なんとか手にいれられそうです。先頭の人は4時台から並んでいるそうです。

This time, I tried to buy it for bringing to a home party of my friend on July 27 Saturday. When I arrived at the shop just before 5:30 am., I was told I was 21st in the line, and it was enough early since person in the line can only buy 3 peaces per person. I heard the first one on the line came around four o'clock in the morning.

整理券が配られるのが8時15分なので、まずは約3時間、持参した折りたたみ椅子で待つことにします。並んでいる人の中には何人かの年配の常連さんがいて、次々にやってくる人たちに、並ぶ場所を教えたり、何も持たずに来た人に、新聞紙をあげたりしています。そして常連さんたちは何ヶ所かに集まって世間話に花を咲かせていて、ほのぼのとした雰囲気です。

The time of store start to deliver a reservation ticket is 8:15, so I needed to wait in the line around three hours on my portable chair. I found some “frequent customers” mainly elder people in the line, and they taught a rule of the line for newcomer or gave them newspapers for sitting on. And they were chatting sometime with laughing on some gossips in some small groups, it was relaxing atmosphere for elderly people.

来る人を数えながら待っていると、6時過ぎには４０人ぐらいになりましたが、その後はぽつり、ぽつりという感じで、この日の50番目の人が来たのが7時5分頃でした。それから来る人には、常連さんが今日は50人になったよと教えてあげているようです。

I was waiting in the queue by counting person coming, and found 40 people around 6 o'clock, but after that, a few people coming one by one until 7:05 reaching 50 person in the line.

常連さんたちの話によると、平日のほうが少しすいているようで、8時ころまで大丈夫なこともあるようですが、6時台に売切れになることもあるようで、なかなか読めないそうです。なので、確実に買いたい人はやはり5時台に来る人が多いようです。

7時ころになると、常連さんはお茶を飲みいったりで、人がまばらになりました。

By hearing from chat by repeated customers, sometimes in weekdays, 50th person coming around 8 o'clock but another day, it was fulled before 7, it is very hard to predict exact time of last person. So, person who want to buy it certainly usually come here between 5 to 6.

そして、いよいよ8時10分ころ、お店の人が出てきて、まずは、列に並んでいる人ひとりひとり全員に「早くからお並びいただき有難うございます」とお礼をいって回ります。そのあと、先頭の人から、注文を聞いていきます。注文できるのは3本までですが、一本ずつバラで包装するか、3本まとめて包装するかも確認していきます。ほとんどの人がバラで3本の注文をするようです。店員さんはあわせて、一人ひとりに並び始めた時間と名前と電話番号を確認していきます。ずるい並び方をするのを防ぐためなのでしょう。こうしてやっと引換券を手に入れることができました。

And finally, around 8:10, a sales person came from the store and firstly bowed to each consumer by telling her thanks for coming from early morning, and then started to take order one by one from the top of the line. Customers can order only three peaces but could select lapping them in one or separately, usually many people lapping separately. The person of the shop asked guest's name, number and time of joining the line for preventing cheating way to get the ticket. Finally, I was able to a reservation ticket.

お店の開店は10時で、整理券があれば夕方まで引き換えることができるので、並んだ人は、一度、それぞれ時間つぶしのため、散っていきます。私は、井の頭公園を散歩して時間をつぶすことにしました。

With this ticket, I was able to buy it opening hours of the shop; 10:00-19:30, I decided to make a walk in Inokashira park near by for waiting opening hour.

そして10時半頃に、お店に戻ると、また何人かが列をつくっていました。ちなみに、小笹の隣は、こちらも行列のできる丸メンチカツで有名な肉のさとうさんです。こちらも行列ができ始めていました。

左が小笹、右がさとうです。さとうのミンチカツは整理券はいりませんが、２０分くらいまつこともあります。

When I returned to the shop around 10:30, I found a short queue in front of the shop but I could buy it in a few minutes. Buy the way, you may find another line of the next shop in a picture, it is line for buying “minced meat and potato croquette” of meat shop Sato, which is also popular shop in Kichijyoji with long line in daytime.

そしてようやく、小笹の羊羹を手にいれることができました、一本675円です。行列に並び始めて約5時間での購入です。なお、小笹の最中は並ばずに購入することができるので、羊羹と一緒に買っていきました。味は、くせのない甘みで、甘党でなくても、いくらでも食べられそうな感じで美味しかったです。5時間並んだ思い入れも少し入っているような気もしますが。

After 5 hours I started to join the line, I finally got the yokan, which is JPY675 per each peace, and also I bought some bean‐jam‐filled wafers, which no need to reservation ticket. I really enjoyed excellent moderate sweet taste without unpleasant taste, I could feel I could eat many peaces although I am not so much sweet lover. I may add special favor it by waiting 5 hours.
