牧野記念庭園の狐の剃刀（キツネノカミソリ）/ Orange spider lily in Makino memorial garden

東京のお盆休みは、残念ながら天気がいまひとつでしたが、雨の合間を見て、牧野記念庭園に行ってきました。前に訪れて感動した、牧野式植物図展示会の第二弾が開催されていたからですが、改めて、牧野博士の植物図鑑にかける情熱を感じてきました。

I visited the Makino memorial garden, although weather of Tokyo in Obon festival week (summer vacation week) was not so good. In the garden, a special exhibition of his botanical drawings (part 2) is now opening, as the part1 I was very excited. This time, again, I was very impressed by his passion to drawings and floral pictorial books as a Japanese pioneer.

Lycoris sanguinea/ Orange Spider Lily /キツネノカミソリ

そして庭園では、ちょうどキツネノカミソリが満開でした。狐の剃刀、彼岸花の仲間でちょうどお盆のころに咲きますが、お彼岸に咲く彼岸花が曼珠沙華とも呼ばれるのに対し、随分と変わった名前を付けられたものです。英語では、キツネノカミソリがorange spider lily, 彼岸花がred spider lilyと同じような名前なのと対照的ですね。

In the garden, orange spider lily was just full blooming. Orange spider lily, Japanese name is “Kitsune-no-kamisori” literally means “Fox's razor” which may be coming from slender shape of leaf, but not be sure, and its best flower season is middle of August, just Obon festival which is indigenous ancestral worship tied to Buddhism, and many Japanese take summer vacation or long weekend.

By the way, red spider lily, which belong to same family of orange spider lily, and its best flower season is around Autumn equinoctial day. Japanese name of red spider lily called Higanbana or Manjushage, as Japanese equinoctial day is “Higan”, and Higan means “other world” where the deceased belong, and also means pure land or the Utopia of Buddhism. And “bana” or “hana” in Japanese is flower, therefore, “Higanbana” can be flower of pure land. Besides, Manjushage is coming from old Buddhist language, Pali and Sanskrit, and means precious flower in pure land. These two flowers belong to same family and blooming different season but both in sacred period in Buddhism, however Japanese impression from both name is completely different.
(I am afraid my English translation from Japanese may be hard to understand.)
