ほんのりと金木犀の香り/ Faint aroma of a fragrant olive or a gold osmanthus

いつもとは違った道で職場に向かっているとほのかによい香りが。見あげると金木犀の蕾が膨らんでほんのりと香っていました。
This morning, I took a different route to my office. When I felt faint fragrant and looked up to a tree near by, I found buds of a fragrant olive were filling and just before opening.

Osmanthus fragrans var. aurantiacus/fragrant olive or gold osmanthus/ キンモクセイ

秋の香りで、ちょっとだけ得した気分です。
I was able to smell of autumn and felt happy a little bit.

久しぶりの新宿御苑 大温室/ Greenhouse in Shinjyuku gyoen garden, for the first time in a while

少し涼しくなったのと、雨模様の天気だったので、久しぶりに新宿御苑の大温室に行ってきました。外の木は少しずつ秋の気配ですが、温室の中は常夏の世界です。

I visited a greenhouse in Shinjyuku gyoen garden for the first time in a while, since it began to be cooler and it was raining in the last weekend. Inside of the greenhouse was everlasting summer while outside was beginning of autumn.

控えめな日本の草花に比べると、熱帯の花は、派手な色やユニークな形をしているのが多くて、見ていて飽きないですね。

Since many tropical flowers have outstanding colors or unique shape comparing Japanese flowers, it is lots of fun to see these.

まずは、このグロッパ・ウイニティ、別名「シャムの舞姫」とも呼ばれるそうですが、舞姫というより、今流行のポケモンGOのキャラクターのような姿です。

A flower named “Globba winitii”, and another name is Siamese dancing ladies, but it looks like a unique character in the latest craze “pokemon GO” rather than dancing ladies.

Brazilian red cloakと呼ばれるこの花、赤いコートから飛び出した、妖精のようにも見えます。
It is a Brazilian red cloak, I can imagine a fairy popping up from a red cloak.

蔓性のマイソルヤハズカズラは赤と黄色の花を棚のうえからぶら下げています。いかにも熱帯のジャングルという風情です。
You can see eye-catching flowers of brown red and yellow on hanging vein, it looks typical tropical jungle.

ジョウゴバナは英語でfirecracker flower　（爆竹の花） と呼ばれ、苞で包まれた茎から赤い花が飛び出すように咲く姿は花火のようでもあります。

A firecracker flowers of red-orange color are flowering on a top of stem also looks like camdle.

オウムバナと呼ばれる、ヘルコニアの仲間です、オウムの嘴にも見えますが、カニの爪のや洗濯板のようにも見えます。
Flowers of Heliconia, some of flowers looks like a lobster-claws, parrot beaks or washboard?

ニオイサンタンカ、無数のプロペラのついたオブジェのようにも見えます。ほんのりとよい香りがしました。
You may see a unique object with a lot of propellers, it is called a fragrant ixora with faintly fragrant.

殿ヶ谷戸庭園 初秋/ Early autumn in a Tonogayato garden

殿ヶ谷戸庭園は約１００年前に、実業家の庭園として整備されたもので、武蔵野台地の崖線と呼ばれる地形をうまく利用した庭園です。ＪＲ中央線等の国分寺駅から直ぐのところにあります。

Tonogayato garden was constructed almost 100 years ago by a tycoon using topographic features as an edge of Musashino terrace. The garden is locating just in front of Kokubunji staion of JR chuo line.

入り口を入ると、崖上の平地に芝生の植えられた気持ちよい空間が広がります。その端にあるハギのトンネルの見ごろまではもう少しでしょうか。

After going through a gate, you can find lawn on edge of the natural terrace. I found a flower tunnel of bush clover could be a week or 10 days earlier than best time for admiring.

Lycoris radiata/ Red spider lily/ ヒガンバナ

崖の面に沿った小道を下っていくと、下には湧水を集めた池で広がっています。

I found a small pond collecting spring water under the cliff after going down a trail of hillside.

崖を下る小さな滝の音や四阿の横に置かれたししおどしの音を聞きながら、庭園を見下ろすと気持ちが爽やかになります。

I was able to feel relax by listening sound of water running down small fall and “Shishiodoshi”; a bamboo ornament making periodical sound by irrigation water, in a small hut over-viewing the garden.

秋の七草だけではなく、ツリガネニンジンやキンミズヒキなど野草の花も咲いていました。
I found some wild flowers such as Japanese lady bell or as well as seven autumnal flowers.

黄熱病 予防注射/ Vaccination of yellow fever

近々アフリカに行く予定があり、黄熱病の予防注射を受けてきました。
黄熱病といえば、日本人にとって、アフリカのガーナで１９２８年にこの病気の研究半ばで命を落とした野口英世で有名です。

Today, I had vaccination of yellow fever before visiting African countries, may-be next month.
In Japan, yellow fever is known as a disease killed a famous Dr. Hideyo Noguchi in 1928 in Ghana during his research for vaccination of this disease.

野口英世の時代はまだウイルスに関する知見が十分でなく、細菌説を唱えていた野口英世は結局、ワクチンを完成することが出来ずにこの病気で自らの命も落とすことになりました。
そして野口の細菌説に異を唱え、ウイルス説をとった別の学者により、野口の死後約１０年たった１９３７年にウイルスワクチンが完成したそうです。

At the time of Dr.Noguchi was investigating, knowledge of virus was quite insufficient and he died by this disease before establishing a true vaccine. And after almost 10 years later, another researcher who criticized Dr. Nuguchi's method for bacteria isolation developed vaccine of yellow fever virus in 1937.

このワクチンの発見・完成に至るまでに、野口英世だけでなく、多くの研究者や助手がこの病気で命を落としたそうです。
この病気は発症すると特効薬がないことから、未だにこのワクチン接種が行われています。少々痛い注射でしたが、先人の苦労や犠牲を考えれば、とるに足らない痛みです。
I learned not only Dr. Noguchi but also many other medical doctors and researchers were killed by this disease during their investigations. We still have no remedy for this disease and only vaccination is saving life from this. I had a little pain during vaccination but it is not comparable to the pain of previous researchers.

ちなみに、この黄熱病のワクチン接種は、これまで１０年毎に接種が必要でしたが、今年からは、一度打つと一生有効になりましたので、私もこれが最後の接種になりました。
By the way, validity period of the vaccination used be only 10 years after inoculation before July of this year, but now it is expanded to life-long. Therefore this vaccination could be my last vaccination.

秋の七草/ Seven autumnal flowers; akino nana-kusa

Lespedeza bicolor/Bush clover/ハギ・ヤマハギ

秋の七草は約１３００年前の万葉時代に山上憶良に詠まれた以下の２首の歌が起源になったと言われています。

-秋の野に 咲きたる花を 指折り（およびをり） かき数ふれば 七種（ななくさ）の花。

-萩の花（はぎのはな） 尾花（をばな） 葛花（くずはな） 瞿麦の花（なでしこのはな）姫部志（をみなへし） また藤袴（ふじばかま） 朝貌の花（あさがおのはな）。

ただし、ここで詠まれている朝貌の花は、今の朝顔ではなく、桔梗を指すものと言われています。

It is said seven autumnal flowers were selected from two ancient poems written in more than 1300 years ago, said as a Manyo era, by a popular poet, Okura Yamonoue.

-Akino-noni, sakitaru hana-wo, oyobi-wori, kaki-kazuhureba, nanakusa-no-hana
-In autumn wild field, blooming flowers, as I counted on my fingers, I found seven kinds.

-Hagi; bush clover, Obana; Chinese silvergrass, kudzu; kudzu, nadeshiko; fringed pink, ominaeshi; golden lace, fuji-bakama; thoroughwort, and Asagao;balloon flower.

Asagao is a flower of morning glory in modern Japanese but asagao in manyo-era is thought to be a balloon flower by botanists.

この七草の花は、歌に詠まれたとおり野に咲く花々で、現代の花に比べると少し地味な感じがしますが、野にそっと咲く花を１３００年以上も前から愛でていた万葉人の感性は日本人として誇りに思っていいのではないかと思います。
All these seven flowers are wild flowers and not so gorgeous comparing modern garden flowers, but I am proud of sensitivity of ancient person to admire such beauty in the field.

あと１０日すると中秋の名月です、こういった野の花を見ながら美しい月を眺められると良いですね。
I would like to watch a beautiful autumn full moon with these wild flowers in ten days, it will be a autumn moon festival.

六義園 晩夏/ Late summer of Rikugi-en garden

一つ前の記事で紹介した旧古河庭園から歩いても２０～３０分の距離にある六義園。こちらは江戸時代の大名の下屋敷で４００年以上の歴史がある日本庭園です。

From the former Furukawa garden, I introduced in the last article, you can visit a Rikugien garden in 20-30 minutes walk. The garden is a typical Japanese style built as a villa of lord more than 400 years ago.

こちらの庭園は３月末の枝垂桜、５月のツツジ、そして１１月の紅葉が有名なので、訪ねた８月末は、旧古河庭園と同様、あまり人は多くなく、こちらもゆっくりと庭を散策することができました。
入り口をはいるとすぐに、春にはライトアップもされる立派な枝垂桜が迎えてくれます。この枝垂桜、江戸彼岸という品種です。有名な染井吉野はこの江戸彼岸を片方の親として、江戸時代にこの六義園のすぐ近くの染井村で作られたものです。

The garden is famous of a weeping cherry in late March, azalea flowers in May and red and yellow leaves in November, therefore late August I visited was not so crowded and I was able to walk around smoothly.
Just after through a gate, you can find a excellent weeping cherry tree, very popular in blooming season. The cherry, variety of Edo-higan, is also known as same variety of a parent of “Somei- yoshino” the most popular variety in Japan and bred or proliferated in a Somei village near-by in Edo era more than 150 years ago.

そして、真ん中に池を配し回りを人工の山が取り囲む回遊式築山泉水庭園が広がります。ちょうど庭師さんが松の剪定中でした。こうした方々によって、気持ちよい庭園が保たれているんですね。

And then you can find a splendid scene of garden with artificial pond and surrounding hills called “Kaisensiki-chikuzan-sensui”. I found gardeners were pruning pine trees and understood such beautiful scene was maintained by their effort.

庭のあちこちに東屋が配置され、のんびりと庭の風景を楽しむことができます。そしてこの庭一番の高さを誇る築山、藤代峠からは、庭を一望することができます。

I was able to enjoy to see surrounding nature from one of shady bowers that are arranged in some places in the garden, and overview from an artificial Fujishiro ridge highest place in the garden.

水辺には秋海棠の花が咲き、櫨の木も色づき始めました。蜻蛉の色も赤みが濃くなってきたようです。暑かった夏もようやく盛りを過ぎたようです。

Toxicodendron succedaneum/ Japanese wax tree/ ハゼノキ

Flower of hardy begonia, the sole begonia naturalized in japan, starts blooming and leaves of Japanese wax tree slightly change to red in front of water, and redness of body of dragonfly has been deepened, that means end of hottest season in Japan.

少し歩き疲れたので、茶屋で池を見ながら、抹茶とお菓子をいただきました。

Since I felt a little tired of walking, and I took a break with Japanese green tea and sweets in a simple tea house in front of the pond.

なお、前の記事の旧古河庭園から六義園には、本郷通りを歩くと迷わずにまっすぐ来られるのですが、少し裏道にはいると。こんな落ち着いた風景も見られます。
In case you walk from Furukawa garden to Rikugien, it could be a easy way along to a Hongo street , but you may find another good cozy scene in a backstreet.
