都心の原生林/ Natural forest in the heart of Tokyo

白金台という都心の一等地にある、国立科学博物館附属自然教育園。江戸時代は大名の下屋敷、明治時代には陸海軍の火薬庫等に使われ、一般人の立ち入りがなかったため、ほとんど手付かずの自然が残っていて、自然林などを観察できる貴重な場所になっています。

An Institute for nature study of National museum of Nature and Science, located in Shirokanedai, the most exclusive residential area in heart of Tokyo. Although in the middle of the richest place, the forest is kept almost original nature of the area. Since the place was used as a suburban residence of daimyo (feudal lord) in Edo era, and then used a site for explosives warehouse of the Army and Navy since the Meiji era before the war, very limited person were allowed to enter, and very precious nature has been conserved here.

園内の道を歩くと、手付かずの自然にいだかれた感じがします。沼や湿地があり、木陰をぬける風は涼しくて気持ちがいいです。

You can find and feel almost untouched natural forest by walking along alleys. It can be cozy to feel cool natural wind through marsh or wetland in the forest.

自然教育園という位置づけなので、最小限の手入れしかしていませんが、植物名の展示は丁寧です。

This institute is aiming to study natural ecosystem in this area, so intervention by human is limited as a minimum, but a plate of plant is very kindly for visitors.

都会の一等地、さぞかし土地の値段も高いだろうと思いますが、天然記念物に指定されています。やはり国の宝です、値段のことを考えはいけませんね。

I wonder the land price must be very expensive in such high end area in Tokyo, but the place is registered as a natural treasure. So the place is priceless.

目黒か白金台の駅から徒歩で10分足らずの距離で、都会の中の別世界に入ることができます。隣は東京都庭園美術館で、こちらは自然の中の美術館です。こちらにはまたの機会に行ってみたいですね。

You can reach the facility by ten minutes walk from Muguro or Shirokanedai station. Next to the institute is a Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum (a museum in a garden), and I would like to visit the art museum next time.

二子玉川公園でちょっと一息/ Just a break at a Futako-tamagawa park

時々買い物に行く二子玉川で、ショッピング街の端に落ち着いた公園を見つけました。入場は無料ですが、ペット連れや子供だけの入園は禁止なので、ゆっくりと散策を楽しむことができます。

I found a small but cozy park near a cutting-edge Futako-tamagawa shopping street where I sometimes visit. Since the park is free to enter but requested to refrain entering with pet animals or children only, visitors can enjoy walking and relaxing quietly.

ショッピングストリートを東に進むと、公園の入り口につきます。ゆるやかな傾斜にそってせせらぎの音を聞きながら散策することができます。

When you go down the shopping street in five minutes walk and you can find a entrance of the park. You may enjoy hearing sound of small stream when you go down gentle slope in the park.

日本庭園風の庭からは、二子玉川のタワーマンションが見えます。

You can find skyscrapers of tower condo from Japanese style garden.

季節的に花菖蒲かと思いましたが、杜若のようです。今期、最後の杜若になりそうです。

Considering flowering season, I was wondering it might be a hanashoubu/Japanese iris (Iris ensata), but it could be kakitsumata/rabbit-ear iris (Iris laevigata) since it had white stripe in its petals. And it must be the last one of this year for me.

藪甘草が天に向かって花を咲かせています。

Flowers of orange daylily are blooming to the sky.

そして桔梗は少しうつむき加減。女郎花は咲き始めのようです。

Flowers of balloon flower a little bit heading down. Patrinia has just started blooming.

二子玉川の買い物で疲れた時に、多摩川からの風にちょっと吹かれるのもいいかもしれません。

When you may feel tired during shopping at the Futako-tamagawa, it could be nice to feel natural breeze coming from Tama river.

花の街、熱海。その3 素敵な脇役たち Town of Flowers, Atami. Vol. 3, Other flowers, not main flowers but good supporting ones

熱海の綺麗なジャカランダとブーゲンビリアの花のことを続けて書いてきましたが、今回はこれらの主役の花ほど目立ちませんが、熱海の海岸沿いの親水水公園で見かけた脇役の花たちを書いてみたいと思います。

I wrote two articles on jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia) and bougainvillea （Bougainvillea spp.）
before, and then, this time I would like to introduce other flowers. They may not be main players but even playing important role in total scene of Atami.

ルリマツリ、コバルトブルーがジャカランダの紫を引き立てます。ルリマツリの花はバンコクでもよく見ましたが、最近は東京でもよく見かけます。

Cobalt blue flower of a leadwort (Plumbago auriculata) can be well harmonized with purple color of jacaranda. I found the leadwort commonly in Bangkok, I used to live, but also I can find them in Tokyo recently.

ブッドレア、藤空木とも言います。薄い藤色や白い花もありますが、このブッドレアは濃い紫が素敵な種です。ちょうどクロアゲハが止まってくれました。

Summer lilac (Buddleja davidii), also called as a butterfly-bush, although they have many color variety from white to violet, the deep purple flower was very impressive. And luckily, I was able to take a shot of a spangle (black butterfly) resting on this flower.

サンゴシトウ（珊瑚紫豆）、アメリカ原産のアメリカディエゴなどから、豪州シドニーで作出された園芸品種です。独特の赤い花が南国の雰囲気を漂わせています。

Camden Coral Tree(Erythrina × bidwillii) , which is cultivated variety produced in Sydney in Australia from Cockspur coral tree and other same family native of American species. I can feel tropical atmosphere from this exotic red flower.

マートル（銀梅花）です。ヨーロッパではその純白から花嫁のブーケによく使われるこの花。ジャカランダの前で、独特の香りを漂わせています。

You can smell fresh aroma from pure white flower of myrtle (Myrtus communis), which is commonly used for bridal bouquet in European coutries.

キバナランタナ、七変化とも呼ばれるランタナや小ぶりなコバノランタナは東京でもよく目にしますが、この黄色いキバナランタナは初めて見ました。ランタナの一種のようですが、あまり色の変化はないようです。コバノランタナは糸川沿いでブーゲンビリアと一緒に咲いていました。（南米原産）

Yellow sage (Lantana camara Linn. var. hybrida), attractive yellow flower in lantana family which is famous of changing color of flower and popular in Tokyo, but I found this yellow variety first time. Also a weeping lantana (Lantana montevidensisis) is blooming with bougainvillea on the bank of Itokawa river.

東京でもよく見かける黄色の目立つ、タイリンキンシバイ、オトギリソウの仲間でヒペリカムヒドコートとして呼ばれることも多いようです。

Other yellow flower, Saint Jon's wort（Hypericum patulum cv. Hidcote）, which is very common in Tokyo, are blooming with bougainvillea.

ポップブッシュという低木も初めてみました。チョコレート色の葉にピンクの花が付いている低木と思ったのですが、ピンクのものは、花ではなく、実を包む鞘だそうです。

I was attracted unique shape of pink flower of a shrub plant with brown leaves named, sticky hop bush (Dodonaea viscosa ‘Purpurea’). However, the flower I thought first was not true flower but pod of beans actually.

ちょっと変わった大きな花は、花の王様とも呼ばれる、キングプロテア。南アフリカの国花だそうです。写真は5月に熱海に行った時のものです。

A large and exotic shape of flwoer top of the branch is called king protea (Protea cynaroides), and sometimes called king of flowers native to South Africa and national flower of this country. The picture was taken in begging of May in there.

5月の連休のまだジャカランダは咲いていない時には、こんな花も咲いていました。カリフォルニアライラックやセアノサスと呼ばれる、青色の美しい木です。ライラックとは別の仲間のようです。名前の通りカリフォルニアの原産のようです。

Also, in last May, I found brilliant blue flower named a California lilac or Ceanothus, native of California. This tree also become popular in Japan recently.

こうしてみると、ジャカランダやブーゲンビリアだけではなくて、世界各国から集められた花が私たちの目を楽しませてくれていることに気がつきます。東京から約１００ｋｍしか離れていませんが、海辺の温暖な気候に恵まれた熱海は、町全体がちょっと温室のような感じがしました。

I recognized many flowers in Atami are collected from all over the world, such as south America and Africa as well as Mediterranean region. Although Atami city is located west of Tokyo with only 100km distance, however, thanks to warm weather facing sea, we can enjoy many beautiful flowers like inside a greenhouse.

花の街、熱海。その2 ブーゲンビリア Town of Flowers, Atami. Vol. 2, Bougainvillea

一つ前の記事でジャカランダのことを書きましたが、熱海ではジャカランダに負けず劣らず、ブーゲンビリアもとても素敵でした。

I just written an article on a jacaranda in Atami city in previous one, but a bougainvillea is also very attractive in there.

ジャカランダは海岸沿いの道に植えられていますが、このビーチに流れ込む糸川沿いにブーゲンビリアが赤や紫の艶やかな色を競うように咲いていました。

Jacarandas are planted along the seaside road, but bougainvilleas are blooming along a Itokawa river which is flowing into the beach. And many colors of flowers, red, pink and purple, are blooming like a competition along the river.

ブーゲンビリアは最近、東京でも見かけるようになりましたが、やはり南国の花のイメージが強く、熱海の街のほうが映えるような気がします。

You may find bougainvillea in Tokyo, but this tropical flower is much harmonized with Atami city facing warm beach of pacific.

前の記事のジャカランダもブーゲンビリアも遠く離れた南米原産の花です。生態系のことを考えれば、こうした外来種の安易な導入には賛否があるかもしれません。個人的には、木本の植物を市街地の公園や街路樹に植えるのは許されても良いのかなあと思っています。

Jacaranda and bougainvillea is not native of Japan but in South America, far from Japan. If you may consider native ecosystem, introduction of these plants can be controversial topics. However as my personal opinion, introduction of woody plants in artificial area, such as garden or road side can be permitted under human's control.

花の街、熱海。その1 ジャカランダ Town of Flowers, Atami. Vol1, Jacaranda

梅雨空の続く今日この頃ですが、熱海ではちょうどジャカランダの花が見ごろというので日帰りで行ってきました。天気も良くて海外通り沿いに植えられたジャカランダを見ながら散歩するすると気持ちが良かったです（少し汗ばむくらいでした）。

At the beginning of rainy season, as I just heard jacaranda flowers in Atami city is now best time for watching, I visited there in one day trip from Tokyo. Last Sunday was not rain, and I was lucky to walk along beach-side road by watching flowers of jacaranda. As it was fine, I was slightly sweaty by walking among the sea side.

熱海と姉妹都市のポルトガルのカスカイス市から贈られた2本のジャカランダがきっかけになって、数年前からは、海岸通沿いに１００本以上植えられて整備が進められているそうです。

Relation of jacaranda and Atami city was started more than 25 years when a sister city of the Atami, Cascais in Portugal presented couple of the trees and now more than 100 trees have been planted in the city.

ただこのジャカランダ、少し気まぐれなところがあって、毎年同じように綺麗に咲きそろうのではなく、木によってあたりはずれがあるようです。

However it is said the plant is something like whim and it is not stable to show full blooming of each tree. So it is little bit difficult to predict beautiful one on this year.

最初に贈られた一番大きい木は、今年はあまり当たり年ではないようです。ほんの数房しか咲いていませんでした。

It could not be good season for the oldest and biggest tree, I can only couple of clusters on it.

一方、こちらの木はかなりの花がついています。

On the other hand, this tree has pretty good flowers on its branch.

まだ小さい苗木でも結構花を咲かせている木もあります。

Even some small trees have sizable flowers.

少しピンク色の花の木もありました。

This is pink color ones.

このジャカランダは日本では紫雲木とも呼ばれ、南米の亜熱帯から熱帯原産で、世界3大花木の一つとも呼ばているそうです。

Jacaranda　(Jacaranda mimosifolia) is a native of tropical or sub-tropical south America and called one of the three most beautiful flower tree in the world.

あとの2つは、鳳凰木Flamboyant、火炎木African tulipでともにアフリカ原産の熱帯の木です。
And the two other trees are said to be a Flamboyant tree (Delonix regia) and an African tulip (Spathodea campanulata).

赤坂日枝神社の神幸祭（しんこうさい）/ Shinto festival parade of Hie shrine in Akasaka, Tokyo

6月10日は赤坂日枝神社の神幸祭で、行列がオフィスの近くを通ったので、運よく何枚かの写真を撮ることができました。

A festival parade, Shinko-sai, of Hie shrine had been just passed near my office at the Friday afternoon of June 10th, and I was lucky to take some photos of the parade.

400年以上続くこのお祭り、神社の氏子さんたちが狩りぎぬなどの昔の衣装をまとって山車や神輿とともに東京都心、皇居の周りを1日かけて周るものだそうです。

The festival has more than 400 year history and shrine parishioners joined the parade wearing Japanese traditional clothes. They paraded by pulling some floats and portable shrines around the imperial palace, used be the Edo castle, all day long.

昔は江戸城に入り、将軍が上覧拝礼したという伝統のあるお祭りだそうです。総勢500名の日本の伝統的な衣装をまとったの行列が通ると普段の見慣れた道も違って見えてきます。

The parade has long and admirable history that it had been allowed to go into the Edo castle and shogun general made worship on this parade. The parade of more than 500 participants with traditional costumes gave me different impression of familiar road side scene.

行列には今年の干支の動物と日枝神社にゆかりのある猿の像が載せられるそうですが、今年は申年なので、お猿さんの像が二体になります。

On the floats, animal of the year of Chinese calendar and a monkey, which has special relation eith this shrine, there were two monkeys on the floats, since this year is “year of monkey”.

小石川後楽園の花菖蒲 /Japanese Iris (Hanasyoubu) in Koishigawa korakuen garden, Tokyo

後楽園遊園地や東京ドームのそばにある小石川後楽園。水戸黄門さんで知られる水戸光圀公ゆかりのお庭です。

A garden named koishigawa korakuen is located in heart of Tokyo and near Korakuen amusement park or Tokyo dome baseball park. It is built by Lord Mitsukuni Mito or popularly known as Lord Komon Mito about 400 years ago.

ちょうど今、花菖蒲が見頃です。雨に濡れる花を見ながら庭を散歩すると都会の中にいることを一瞬忘れさせてくれます。

Now, it is the best time for watching full blooming of Japanese iris (Hanasyoubu). I was able to forget stressful urban life by strolling in the quiet garden for a while.

あまり広くはないのでゆっくり回ってもそれほど時間はかかりません。ちょっとした息抜きにもいいかもしれません。

As the garden is not so large, you can walk around the garden without spending much time. If you need a short break, you can just visit here.

梔子（クチナシ）の香りに癒されました。Relaxed by gentle fragrant of Cape jessamine

土曜日は早起きして目黒天空庭園を散策してきました。クチナシが少し満開を過ぎた感じでしたが、あたりに良い香りを漂わせていました。

I waked up early morning in Saturday and took stroll in a park named Meguro Sky Garden. In the park, cape jessamine (Gardenia jasminoides) was full blooming may-be just after its best time but sweet smell was spread around in the park.

パーゴラの中のベンチに座ると、柔かい甘い香りに包まれたような感じで、朝の清清しい空気ですっかり癒されました。

I was very relaxed with sweet aroma in fresh morning air by sitting on a bench under a pergola.

クチナシには八重と一重の花があり、庭木などでは八重のクチナシが多いようです。ここのクチナシは一重のもので、開花直後の花は花びらが白く広く広がっていますが、日がたつにつれ、花びらの端が丸まって細くなってきて、少し黄色味を帯びてきます。

A cape jessamine has its single petal or double petal flowers and double petal is preferred for private garden but most of flower in the garden single petal one. The petals of just after blooming are pure white and fully spread but petal becomes yellowish and thin by rolled by edge time goes by.

タイにいる時に見かけた、キバナクチナシも同じように、時が経つと花びらが細くなり花びらの色が濃くオレンジ色になってくるようで、この花の名前が分かるまで苦労した覚えがあります。

When I found a similar family flower, golden gardenia (Gardenia carinata), the flower was old and had orange thin petals ao it took long time to know the true name of this flower.

公園内にはギンバイカやツキヌキニンドウも綺麗な花を付けていました。

６月の花：立てば芍薬（しゃくやく）、座れば牡丹（ぼたん） Flower of June; Standing as (for) a Chinese peony and sitting as (for) a Chinese tree peony.

牡丹も芍薬も少し時期を過ぎてしまいましたが、６月の札にちなんで、この２つの美しい花を取り上げてみました。この２つの花も似ていますが、５月の菖蒲と杜若に比べると見分け方はずっと簡単です（菖蒲と杜若の記事はこちらです）。

Best season for a Chinese tree peony and a Chinese peony has just been past, but I would like to write on these plants now since the Chinese tree peony is representing a flower of June in the Japanese playing card. A Chinese tree peony and a Chinese peony look like similar but not so difficult to identify of these comparing the difficulty of a blood-red iris and a rabbit-ear iris that I wrote in May(You can find it from here) .

牡丹は木本で枝分かれした枝から大きな花を咲かすのに対し、芍薬は草本なので、土から伸びた茎の先端に花を付けるので、近寄ってよく見れば見分けはすぐにつきます。英語の名前は、この２つの植物の違いをよく表わしています。

Comparing the Chinese tree peony has flowers on branches from shrub tree, Chinese peony is a herbaceous and has flowers on the top of its annual stem. So you can distinguish them by carefully watching.

芍薬はすっと伸びた茎の上に花をつけるので、美女の立ち姿にたとえられ、少し下から花をつける牡丹は美しい座り姿にたとえたといわれます。

Since peony has flowers on slim shape and can be resembled to standing beauty and tree peony can be resembled to sitting beauty as it has flowers from shrub.

また、すっと伸びた芍薬の花を愛でるには立って見た方が美しく、牡丹は少し横向きに花を咲かすので、座って愛でるのが良いという説もあるそうです。

It is also said, peony can be best seen from standing view as tree peony is best from sitting view.

この牡丹、昔から高貴な花で、育てるのも難しいと言われてきました。特に種から育てるのが難しいそうですが、最近は芽生えの時に、芍薬の台木に牡丹を継ぐ方法が確立されて随分と育てやすくなったそうです。草本の芍薬に継いだ牡丹が木になるとは、少し不思議な気がします。

The tree peony has been considered precious plants and hard to breed, particularly from seeds. However, developed technique for tree peony grafting on peony makes easier than used to be. It is a little bit funny for me that an arboreous plant is grafted on a herbaceous plant.

牡丹も芍薬も昔から薬としても珍重され、特に牡丹は中国では百花の王と呼ばれ愛されてきました。特に百獣の王、唐獅子との構図は有名です。

Both of the tree peony and peony has been grown as Chinese medicine and treated as precious plants. Particularly, the Chinese tree peony has been loves as the king of flowers for long time, famous picturesque design with lion, which is king of animal.
