６月の花：立てば芍薬（しゃくやく）、座れば牡丹（ぼたん） Flower of June; Standing as (for) a Chinese peony and sitting as (for) a Chinese tree peony.

牡丹も芍薬も少し時期を過ぎてしまいましたが、６月の札にちなんで、この２つの美しい花を取り上げてみました。この２つの花も似ていますが、５月の菖蒲と杜若に比べると見分け方はずっと簡単です（菖蒲と杜若の記事はこちらです）。

Best season for a Chinese tree peony and a Chinese peony has just been past, but I would like to write on these plants now since the Chinese tree peony is representing a flower of June in the Japanese playing card. A Chinese tree peony and a Chinese peony look like similar but not so difficult to identify of these comparing the difficulty of a blood-red iris and a rabbit-ear iris that I wrote in May(You can find it from here) .

牡丹は木本で枝分かれした枝から大きな花を咲かすのに対し、芍薬は草本なので、土から伸びた茎の先端に花を付けるので、近寄ってよく見れば見分けはすぐにつきます。英語の名前は、この２つの植物の違いをよく表わしています。

Comparing the Chinese tree peony has flowers on branches from shrub tree, Chinese peony is a herbaceous and has flowers on the top of its annual stem. So you can distinguish them by carefully watching.

芍薬はすっと伸びた茎の上に花をつけるので、美女の立ち姿にたとえられ、少し下から花をつける牡丹は美しい座り姿にたとえたといわれます。

Since peony has flowers on slim shape and can be resembled to standing beauty and tree peony can be resembled to sitting beauty as it has flowers from shrub.

また、すっと伸びた芍薬の花を愛でるには立って見た方が美しく、牡丹は少し横向きに花を咲かすので、座って愛でるのが良いという説もあるそうです。

It is also said, peony can be best seen from standing view as tree peony is best from sitting view.

この牡丹、昔から高貴な花で、育てるのも難しいと言われてきました。特に種から育てるのが難しいそうですが、最近は芽生えの時に、芍薬の台木に牡丹を継ぐ方法が確立されて随分と育てやすくなったそうです。草本の芍薬に継いだ牡丹が木になるとは、少し不思議な気がします。

The tree peony has been considered precious plants and hard to breed, particularly from seeds. However, developed technique for tree peony grafting on peony makes easier than used to be. It is a little bit funny for me that an arboreous plant is grafted on a herbaceous plant.

牡丹も芍薬も昔から薬としても珍重され、特に牡丹は中国では百花の王と呼ばれ愛されてきました。特に百獣の王、唐獅子との構図は有名です。

Both of the tree peony and peony has been grown as Chinese medicine and treated as precious plants. Particularly, the Chinese tree peony has been loves as the king of flowers for long time, famous picturesque design with lion, which is king of animal.
