豆大福@原宿・瑞穂 Mame-daifuku mochi; rice cake with azuki red bean paste and boiled red peas, at a Mizuho Harajyuku in Tokyo

いよいよ豆大福、第３弾完結編です（護国寺の群林堂と泉岳寺の松島屋の記事はそれぞれこちらから）。瑞穂の豆大福も午前中に売り切れることもあるとか、松島屋であやうく売りきりで買えないところだったので、今回は有給のお休みを活用して、平日の１０時ころに行って見ました。さすがに、お店には他のお客さんもいなくて、ゆっくりと買うことができました。

This is the last report of three famous mame-daifuku mochi shops in Tokyo, Mizuho in Harajyuku area, and please refer previous ones on Gunrindo in Gokokuji and Matsushima-ya in Sengakuji by clicking on the names. When I went to Matsushimaya in last week, I was the last consumer before sold-out of that day. So I arrived the shop around 10 AM on weekday of my annual leave and found few guest in the shop.

お店は明治神宮前の交差点から少し裏通りに入ったところで、若者の町、原宿とは思えないような静かな佇まいです。

The shop is located on an alley off the Gingumae crossroads. Although the Harajyuku area is very popular for young people like teenagers, around the shop is very tranquil.

一つ２１６円で、他の二つの店より少し高めです。周りのお餅は結構しっかりしていますが、中の漉し餡はとろけるような柔かさです。豆の味付けも、さほど塩辛くなく、全体的にバランスのとれた上品な味わいです。

Price of the mame-daifuku is JPY 216 for each and a little bit more expensive than other two shops. Outside skin of mochi has stable but texture of red bean paste inside is very soft and smooth and good combination for tasting. The saltiness of boiled red peas in rice cake is also well balanced.

さて、東京三大豆大福は食べ比べてみましたが、それぞれ甲乙つけがたいほど、美味しかったのですが、個人的には護国寺の群林堂の柔かいお餅とびっしりと入った赤エンドウの組み合わせのインパクトが強く残っています。３つの大福のうち、最初に食べたから余計に印象が強いのかもしれません。
よろしければ、皆さんも食べ比べてみてはいかがですか。

For me it is very tough question which is the best mame-daifuku, but I may say the one of Gunrindo could be the my favorite one since combination of silky soft rice cake and salty boiled red pea is marvelous. I suppose impression of Gunrindo's one was strong since I ate it firstly among the three. I recommend to try to taste by yourself.

４月の花、藤 Japanese wisteria; Flower of April

桜の季節が過ぎ、藤の花が清清しい香りを放ちながら房になった花を綺麗に咲かせています。名前の通り、薄紫の藤色の花が多いですが、株によって少しずつ色に濃淡があり、また、少しピンクのものや白い花もあります。

After cherry blossoms season, bunches of flower of Japanese wisteria are now almost full blooming with refreshing and sweet aroma.　”Fuji”, Japanese name of Japanese wisteria, is also representing name of color of light violet or purple, and the dominant color of this flower is light violet but also has light pink or white flower variety.

日なたを好むつる性の植物で、公園などに日陰を作るため藤棚・パーゴラとして良く利用されます。また生命力が強く成長も早いことから、日本では古くから愛され、また利用されてきました。そして、
昔から強い勢力を持っていた藤原氏から愛され、また藤原氏にゆかりある方が、佐藤や伊藤など藤の字を含ん姓を名乗ったり、藤の家紋を使ったりして、日本人に馴染みの深い植物です。

Since the plant has nature of fast growing vein and preferring sun light, it is planted in a garden or park for making a wistaria-trellis or pergola to provide shade in the garden. The strong vitality and fast growing plant has been loved since ancient time, particularly by the rich and strong “Fujiwara” family because of their surname. And name of “Fujiwara” has been connected popular Japanese family name such as Satou or Itou, they have one Chinese character of “Tou; Fuji” in it. They have also their family crests relating flower of wistaria.

ただ、このつる性の植物、野生では他の木に絡みつきながら１０ｍ以上の高さにも成長し、最後には元の木を枯らしてしまう、いわゆる絞め殺しの性質も持っているそうです。

This vigorous plant grows more than 10m by hanging up with other tree and sometimes finally killed the host tree by choking and called a kind of strangler.

黄色の花のキングサリ（金鎖）、房が垂れ下がる姿が少しフジに似ているので、キバナフジとも呼ばれますが、植物としては別のもので、むしろ同じ黄色い花のエニシダに近い植物のようです。

You may find another vine plant with yellow flower called a golden chain (Laburnum anagyroides), it is called in Japanese as “yellow flower wistaria” but is not same family of wistaria (Wisteria floribunda) but near relation with a Scotch broom (Cytisus scoparius).
このキングサリは、英語でもGolden chain と呼ばれています。一方、タイに住んでいた時によく見かけた下の写真の黄色い花、こちらはGolden shower （ナンバンサイカチ）という花で、同じように黄色い花が房になって垂れ下がります、この花は、タイの国花でタイ人からとても愛されています。

And then this flower also looks like golden shower (Cassia fistula), which is loved very much by Thai people as a national flower.

タイでは、フジは見たことがなかったですが、紫色の似合うタイ人にはフジも人気が出そうな気がします。
I had no chance to see a Japanese wisteria in Thailand. Should the plant introduced in Thai, the tree would be popular since Thai people love violet color very much.

豆大福@泉岳寺・松島屋 Mame-daifuku mochi; rice cake with azuki red bean paste and boiled red peas, at a Matsushimaya at Sengakuji in Tokyo

少し前に護国寺の群林堂というお店の豆大福を紹介しましたが、今回は泉岳寺の松島屋の豆大福です。ここの豆大福も有名で、午後には売り切れになるというので、土曜の１１時ごろに訪ねてみると、店の前には数人の方が並んでいました。

I introduced a mame-daifuku mochi; rice cake with azuki red bean paste and boiled red peas, at Gunrindo in Gokokuji recently, and I visited another Japanese sweet shop, Matsushima-ya in Sengakuji this time. My family arrived at the shop around 11 in Saturday morning as I heard it could be sold out in the afternoon. And I found some customers were in line for waiting.

家族３人で並んでいて、あともう一人になったところで、店の中から「豆大福あと３つで終了です。」の声が。「ああー、前の人が３つ買えば、売り切れだなあ」と諦めようと思った瞬間、前の人の「予約していたものですが」の声が・・・。なんと、ラッキーにも最後の３つを買うことができました。

When my wife, son and I were in line just next for order, I heard a notice of store clerk that only three rice cakes were remaining. And I thought a lady in front of me would buy remaining three and I could not buy. But the lady said she had already reserved her cakes in advance, so I was so lucky to buy last three cakes.

貴重な大福を家族で一つずつ頂きました。周りの餅は薄いですがしっかりしていて、塩味の効いた赤エンドウが、餡の甘みを引き出してくれています。あっという間に、一つ食べ終えて、もう一つ食べたいなあと思いましたが、またの楽しみということで。

My family tasted the last three mochi cakes at my home. Outside skin of mochi is thin but stable texture and salty boiled red peas makes red bean paste inside more tasteful. I have just eaten instantly and wanted to eat more, but it coule be next time.

松島屋を出て、少し坂を下って、赤穂義士で有名な泉岳寺にもお参りしてきました。泉岳寺の参道には、赤穂の銘菓「しほみ饅頭」の幟旗が。私の母親の在所が同じ播州で、子供の頃に何度か食べたのが懐かしくて、思わずこちらも買ってきました。落雁のような甘い皮の中に塩味のついた餡が入っていて、これもまた絶妙のバランスです（実は、これまで、外側の皮に塩味がついていると思っていましたが、塩味は餡のほうについていました）。

After I bought mame-daifuku I visited a temple of Sengakuji famous of forty-seven ronin story by walking down of a slope. I found a banner-flag showing “Shihomi manjyu, a bun filled salty taste red bean paste”, the sweet is popular of Bansyu area, west of Kobe, and my mother's home town. I had memory of tasting it when I was childhood as a gift from my mother. The sweet has good harmony of salty red bean paste covered by rakugan; dry confection of starch and sugar.

さて、東京三大豆大福もあと一つです、こちらもまた近いうちに。

花海棠（ハナカイドウ）と花蘇芳（ハナズオウ）

桜の染井吉野の花もすっかり葉桜になりましたが、今は桜に似た花海棠の花が綺麗なピンクの花を付けています。この淡いピンク色が、酔って頬を染めた楊貴妃の美しさにたとえられるなど中国や日本で昔から愛されてきました。

Figures of cherry blossoms changes from full blossom to fresh leaves, you may find pretty pink flowers of “Hall crabapple” in gardens or along streets. The flowers of tree has been long loved in China and Japan since ancient time like beauty light pink of petals was admired as resemble to cheek of slightly drunken Yang Guifei, the beloved consort of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang.

この花は梨や林檎の仲間で、海棠の”棠”は梨の意味で、海を渡ってきた梨という意味になるそうです。

The name of “Kaidou” in Japanese means “pear from outside sea” since “Kai” is “sea” and “dou” is old word for pear, it means the tree was imported from China.

一方、やや紫がかった鮮やかな赤い花を枝の近くにたくさん付けている花蘇芳。よく見ると蝶のような花が葉が出る前の枝に引っ付くように咲いています。

You may see another pink flowers called “Hanazuou” or Chinese redbud, many small purple pink flowers on branches. You can find each flower resemble to shape of butterfly.

この形からもわかるようにマメ科の花ですが、蘇芳という名前は、同じマメ科の別の植物から取れる染料で染めた蘇芳色に花の色が似ていることから付けられたそうです。その名の通り、赤紫色の花が印象的ですが、白い花の白花花蘇芳というものもあります。名前の由来からするとちょっとおかしな名前ですね。

You may find the plant belong to Fabaceae; pea family of plants from shape of flower, and Japanese name “zuou” comes from “zuou color “ dyed by extract from other plant belong to Fabaceae. However they have also white flower variety named “white Chinese bud” or “Shirobana hanazuou”.

この花蘇芳、英語ではChinese redbud, 学名をCercis chinensisと言い、名前の通り原産は中国です。なお、ヨーロッパ原産の似たような花を咲かせる西洋ハナズオウ（Cercis siliquastrum）は「ユダの木」と呼ばれキリスト教徒にはあまり好まれていないようです。
Chinese redbud (Cercis chinensis) is native to China and it's allied species native to Europe, Cercis siliquastrum, is called “Judas tree” and not so loved from Christians by its history.

目白台から神田川へ/ From Mejiro hill to Kanda river

春の陽気に誘われて目白台から、新江戸川公園、そして神田川を渡って早稲田まで散歩してきました。
I strolled from Mejiro hill through Shin-edogawa park to Kanda river through a nice and warm holiday afternoon.

目白台の運動公園の桜は、散り始めで、風が吹くたびに花吹雪で、野球場の芝生は雪が積もったように白くなっています。

The cherries in the Mejiro-hill park were just after full blossoms and I was in a shower of blossoms in each gentle breeze. The lawn of baseball field looks like covered by white snow.

桜の根元のハナニラも雪の中に咲いているようです。

Spring star at the bottom of the cherry also looks like blooming in the snow.

そして坂の途中にある新江戸川公園、椿山荘の隣になります。都会の公園とは思えないような、山の中を散歩している気分になれます。

A park named Shin-edogawa park on slope of hill next to famous Chinzanso hotel, you can fell like in countryside. I was just enjoying hiking trail in the mountains.

若葉の中、四十雀の鳴き声が響きます。
You can hear the voice of Japanese tit singing in fresh green leaves.

そして神田川の水面を散った桜が花筏となって流れていきます。のどかな春のひと時の散歩を楽しむことが出来ました。

And from a bridge of Kanda river, I was able to see flower petals of cherry are flowing on the stream. I really enjoyed holiday afternoon walk in warm spring day.

豆大福@護国寺・群林堂 Mame-daifuku mochi; rice cake with azuki red bean paste and boiled red peas, at a Gunrindo, in Gokokuji town in Tokyo

護国寺に豆大福が美味しい群林堂というお店があるというので、家内に誘われ、一緒に買いに行ってきました。日曜日がお休みということで、土曜日の朝１０時過ぎに行くと、もうこの行列。そして購入できる個数は制限つきとの張り紙も、自然と期待が高まります。

According to my wife's request for going shopping for delicious mame-daifuku mochi; rice cake with azuki red bean paste and boiled red peas, I went to a Gunrindo, small but popular Japanese-style confectionery store in Gokokuji town with her. When my wife and I arrived at the store in the Suturday morning since the shop is closed in Sundays, I found long queue in front of the shop. I also found a notice showing that number of sweets consumers can buy would be limited whenever the shop be crowded.

待つこと約１０分くらい、他の品目のお品書きも少しはありますが、ほとんど豆大福専門店のような感じで、１個１７０円です。

After over ten minutes waiting along the cue, I was able to buy 6 pieces of the mochi by JPY 170 in each, and I found the shop is almost specialized for mame-daifuku mochi although they have a few other sweets and mochi.

柔かいお餅にたっぷり餡が入っていますが、思ったほど甘くなく、硬めに茹でられた赤えんどう豆がいいアクセントになっていて、意外にするすると食べられます。これだけ行列になるのがわかります。

Very well tasted azuki red bean pasted is covered by soft rice cake with boiled whole red peas with good proportion. So you can eat 2-3 mochis in short time and I can recognize reason of long cue.

東京にはあと２つ豆大福の美味しいお店があり、東京三大豆大福とも呼ばれているとか。家内はあとの二つにも興味深々の様子なので、近いうちにあと２つのお店のことも紹介できそうです。

According to my wife's information, there are two more famous mame-daifuku shops in Tokyo, so I am wondering I will able to report of two more daifukus in near future.

春を彩る黄色の花木 （3）/ Yellow tree flowers in spring (3)

春の黄色の花シリーズの３回目です。今回で完結する予定です。
This is 3rd version of yellow tree flowers in spring and it is the last version.

裸の枝から藤のような房状の黄緑色の花を下げるキブシ。小さく地味な花ですが、枯れ枝に長い房が下がっていて、ちょっと不気味な感じもします。キブシ科の植物です。

Early Spiketail, you can find bunches of yellowish green flowers hanging under a bare branch and it is not so flamboyant but exotic shape like hanging under a dead branch. The scientific name is Stachyurus praecox and belong to Crossosomatales, Stachyuraceae.

そして桜の花が開いて一気に街が華やかになるころ、生け垣などの山吹も花をつけ始めます。昔から山吹色と呼ばれる、やや赤みがかった明るい黄色の花です。5枚の花びらの一重咲きのものと、八重咲きになるものがあります。この花はバラ科の花ですが、実をつけないことは、太田道灌の山吹の花の逸話で有名です。

And almost same time with cherry blossoms are blooming, we can see slightly reddish and bright yellow flower of Japanese kerria in a hedge or bush in a garden. The color of the flower, Yambuki, called in Japanese has been loved from ancient time. The flower with five petals with single and double petaled ones. Kerria japonica is belong to Rosales, Rosaceae and closely related cherry but has no fruit, which is famous of anecdote of Dokan Oota, very famous samurai warrior.

そして、しなやかな枝がまっすぐに伸びその先端が多く枝分かれするエニシダ。ヨーロッパでは昔から箒に使われ（broomは箒という意味です）、魔女が乗って空を飛ぶ箒はきのエニシダでできているそうです。明るい黄色い蝶のような花を枝の周りに咲かせて華やかなマメ科の植物です。

And then bright yellow flowers of Scotch broom can be seen in a bush, this plant has been used for a broom in European countries from the medieval period. A witch's broomstick is made by this plant. The shape of the flower is resemble to butterfly. This plant belong to Fabaceae.

黄色いボンボリ状の花を咲かせるアカシア属の花。その中でもフサアカシアはミモザとも呼ばれています。本来ミモザはオジキソウをさしますが、ヨーロッパ（イタリアなど）では、このフサアカシアがミモザとも呼ばれ、早春の女性の日(３月８日）に男性から女性に花束にして贈られます。

You can see flower of wattle or Acacia family, eye-catching small yellow ball flower on the top of the branch. In the wattles, Acacia dealbata or silver wattle is also called mimosa, which is presented from gentlemen to ladies on 8th of March, Ladies day in Europe. Actually “mimosa” is ordinary name of “Mimosa pudica” and completely different plant from “Acacia dealbata” but confused.

最後はヤマモモです。黄色い花とはいえないかもしれませんが、葉に隠れてこっそりと咲いています。このヤマモモ、初夏にはキャンディのような可愛い実をたくさんつけます。

And the last one is a Chinese bayberry, it cannot be called yellow flower but I would like to call yellow flower, too. In early summer, it has very cute fruit like colorful candies.

３回にわけていろいろな黄色い花を紹介してきました。桜などに比べると地味な花が多いですが、結構個性的な花も多いですね。

早春を彩る黄色の花木 （2）/ Yellow tree flowers in early spring (2)

４月に入ってしまいましたが、前回に引き続き、春の黄色い花木の続きです。前回の記事はこちらから。This is a second article on yellow spring flowers, and you can find previous one from here.

バラ科の花が梅から桃に移る頃、トサミズキやヒュウガミズキの花が街路や公園などで目につくようになります。小ぶりで薄黄色の二つの花は似ていますがトサミズキの花は小さな花が７－８個集まって、おしべの色が茶色がついているのに対し、ヒュウガミズキは２－３個の花でトサミズキよりはやや小型です。二つとも、トサミズキ属の植物でユキノシタ目マンサク科で前回書いたマンサクに近い種類です。

When pink flowers peak can be changed from Japanese apricot to peach in March, you may find flowers of a spike witch-hazel and a buttercup winter-hazel on roadside or in a park. Their flowers both small and bright yellow are very resemble but you can distinguish that a bunch of spike witch-hazel has 7-8 small flowers with brown color stamens and a buttercup winter-hazel is smaller with 2-3 flowers with yellow stamens. A spike witch-hazel (Corylopsis spicata) and a buttercup winter-hazel (Corylopsis pauciflora) are same Corylopsis family and belong to Saxifragales, Hamamelidaceae, same of a witch-hazel which I wrote in the previous article.

そして垣根などには、オウバイとオウバイモドキ（別名：ウンナンオウバイ）が花を付け始めます。花が梅に少し似ていて黄色なので黄梅と呼ばれていますが、梅の仲間ではなくジャスミンの仲間です。ただしあまり香りはしませんが。この二つとの花はよく似ていますが、オウバイが落葉樹で裸の枝に花を付け始めるのに対し、オウバイモドキは常緑なので、葉のついた枝に花が咲いていますので見分けることができます。二つともシソ目モクセイ科のソケイ属に属しています。

You may find winter jasmine and primrose jasmine on hedges. Their Japanese names of “Oubai” and “Oubai modoki” include meaning of “yellow apricot”, although they are not apricot family but of jasmine family as English names are showing. However they have very few fragrant. Although their flower are resemble, you can find flower of winter jasmine is blooming without leaves as it is deciduous plant and primrose jasmine is blooming with their ever-green leaves. A winter jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum) and a primrose jasmine (Jasminum mesnyi) are belong to Lamiales, Oleaceae.

また垣根や植え込みのレンギョウもこの同じシソ目モクセイ科の中のレンギョウ属の植物です。普通に見るレンギョウは、葉と花が一緒に出てきますが、先に花だけが出てくるのはチョウセンレンギョウと呼ばれる近縁種のようです。

A golden-bell or weeping forsythia is also popular in hedges or shrubs, their flowers usually coming with their leaves but flowers of a variety Forsythia 'Kumson' or Korean forsythia are coming first without leaves. It's scientific name is Forsythia suspensa and belong to Lamiales Oleaceae, same of winter jasmine.

これらの春になって花をつけるもののより早く、冬のうちから黄色い花を付けている花もあります。葉が赤くなりギザギザの葉を持つヒイラギナンテンと、少し長い葉のホソバヒイラギナンテン、こちらはすこし長くてぎざぎざはありませんし葉も緑のままですが、これらは冬から早春の間、黄色の花で私たちを楽しませてくれました。そろそろ花の季節も終わりのようです。これらはキンポウゲ目 メギ科メギ属の植物です。

Other yellow flowers of Mahonia family have been blooming from winter time. You can identify Mahonia japonica by jagged leaves like saw-tooth, and sometime reddish color in winter time and Chinese mahonia by ever^green long smooth leaves. After long period of flowering their season would be almost end. Mahonia japonica (or Berberis japonica) and Chinese mahonia ( or Berberis fortunei) are belong to Ranunculales, Berberidaceae.

そして、桜が咲く頃になると、蔓にそって一気に黄色の花をさかせる、カロライナジャスミン。芳香がありジャスミンの名前がついていますが、 リンドウ目ゲルセミウム科ゲルセミウム属の植物で、ジャスミンとは別の仲間です。

Carolina jasmine is start blooming same time of cherry blossoms on their climbing vines. They have good fragrant and name of “Jasmine” but Caroline jasmine (Gelsemium sempervirens) is belong to Gentianales, Gelsemiaceae and completely different from Jasminum.
