早春を彩る黄色の花木 （１）/ Yellow tree flowers in early spring (1)

春は梅、桃、桜とバラ科の赤・ピンク系統の花が私たちの目を楽しませてくれます。
れにひきかえ、春に咲く黄色の花たちは、決して華やかではありませんが、どこか心を和ませてくれて、そして着実に春が近づいていることを教えてくれます。

We are now enjoying many spring flowers on trees such as cherry blossoms, peach and Japanese apricot and they are belong to Rosaceae family and mainly red, pink or white flowers and very eye-catching.
However also same time we can find many yellow flowers and they are not so outstanding comparing pink or red ones, but they are telling us spring is certainly coming.

まずは、薄黄色の透明でつやのある花びらが蝋細工のようなことからその名がついている蝋梅（ロウバイ）。梅の名前がついていますが、クスノキ目・ロウバイ科・ロウバイ属の植物です。早いものは１月から花を付け始めます。

A Japanese allspice is the flower showing first sign of spring from January, Japanese name “Roubai” means a wax paper apricot since shape of flower resemble to apricot and petal is like wax paper but this flower not belong to a family of apricot or Rosaceae. A scientific name is Chimonanthus praecox and belong to Laurales, Calycanthaceae.

蝋梅を追いかけて咲き始めるのが、マンサク。「まず咲く」が名前の由来とか。紐のような花びらがマンサク属の花の特徴です。ユキノシタ目マンサク科の植物です。

A witch-hazel is coming next to the allspice from beginning of February, Japanese name “Mansaku” means “first blooming” from a dialect in North-East region in Japan. Brawn-yellow slender strap-shaped petals is forming unique shape. The flower's scientific name is Hamamelis japonica and belong to Saxifragales, Hamamelidaceae.

昔から和紙の原料に使われてきた三椏（ミツマタ）。最近は園芸種として赤色の花を付けるものも栽培されているます。やはり春に先に咲くので「さきくさ」とも呼ばれ万葉のころから３つの枕詞としても使われたようです。フトモモ目 ジンチョウゲ科ミツマタ属の植物です。そういえば、少し花がジンチョウゲにも似ていますね。

A oriental paper-bush which used be utilized for Japanese traditional paper, now a days, traditional Japanese paper is scarcely produced for industry use. Some ornamental varieties including orange color flower are now commonly planted in gardens. Ancient name called “Sakikusa” means early blooming and had special meaning connected to number three since the branches of this plant always making three-pronged. A scientific name is Edgeworthia chrysantha and belong to Myrtales Thymelaeaceae, and which means similar family of “winter Daphne” sa you may know flower is a little bit similar to winter Daphne.

ミツマタと同じ頃、小さな黄色の花を枝の先につけるサンシュユ。秋につける真っ赤な実は食用にはなりませんが、漢方薬として利用されるとか。また、温めた牛乳にサンシュユの枝を入れておくとヨーグルトができるそうです。ブルガリアではサンシュユの近縁種で実際にヨーグルトを作ることもあるそうです。ミズキ目ミズキ科ミズキ属の植物です。

A Cornelian cherries, which has name of cherry but not belong to Rosaceae family, and bunch of very tiny flowers on the top of branch. The red fruit maturing in autumn, which looks a little bit similar to cherry, cannot be eaten directly but used as Chinese medicine. It is said the branch of this plant put in hot milk can produce yogurt and actually an allied species in Bulgaria is used for production. It has a scientific name as Cornus officinalis, and belong to Cornales Cornaceae.

Although there are many other yellow flowers, I will stop now today and I will write another article later.

目黒川すぐ横の天空庭園/ Meguro Sky Garden just near the Meguro river; one of the most popular cherry blossoms watching spot in Tokyo.

まもなく桜の見ごろを迎える目黒川ですが、そのすぐそばに目黒天空庭園があります。
この天空庭園、首都高の池尻ジャンクションの屋上を利用したもので、朝の７時から夜の９時までは無料で開放されています。

Meguro Sky Garden just near the Meguro river; one of the most popular cherry blossoms watching spot in Tokyo, and we will soon have the best season for watching. The garden is constructed on a roof of the junction of Metropolitan Expressway. And you can enter the garden free of charge from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm

上空から見た姿はグーグルマップの写真を見ればよくわかります。You can understand by watching a picture of Google map of the place.

ジャンクションの道路の上を利用しているので、楕円を描いた傾斜のあるところが庭園になっています。色々な植物で四季を感じられるようになっています。

On the oval and sloped rooftop, many trees and flowers are planted for visitors to feel four seasons in Tokyo

（↑　１本の木から紅白の花を咲かせる珍しい桃、源平しだれがちょうど見ごろでした。 Flower peach "Genpei shidare"　which has bothe red and wihte flowers on one tree）

庭園の一番高い部分は、昔の田んぼを再現したビオトープになっています。地域の子供たちの学習や生態系の保全のため、普段は一般の人の立ち入りは制限されていますが、ちょうど明日（３月３０日）は一般公開がされるようです。行ってみたいけど、ちょっと無理かなあ？

On the top end of the roof, original rural landscape is reestablished as a biotope and used for children to learn and conserve ecosystem. Usually this section is only open for registered person but sometimes it is open for visitors. And tomorrow, 30th of March, will be special open-day for visitors.

そして夜には庭園から都心の夜景も楽しむこともできます。 And you can enjoy night view of Tokyo Metropolitan.

目黒川の花見の見頃はもう少しでしょうか？ Best time for cherry blossoms watching can be a couple days later.

目黒川の桜（ソメイヨシノ）は早い木でも１－２分咲きで、まだ少し花見には早かったです。今週中頃以降が見ごろでしょうか？

Sakura (Cherry, var. Somei-yoshino) along the Meguro river is just start blooming and it could be the best time for watching after Wednesday or weekend.

その代わり、近くの菅刈公園で白花の「大島桜」が、西郷山ではピンクの濃い「陽光」が満開でした。

However, a white variety “Oshima” is just full bloossoms in the Sugekari park and a pink variety “Yoko” on the top of the Saigo mountain as well, they are just 5-10 minutes walk from the Meguro river.

こうして色々な品種があって、それぞれ楽しめるのがいいですね。

So we can enjoy many varieties of cherry in long time.

神様の食べ物、カカオ/ Food of the gods; Cacao

先日の記事で、チョコレートの味が産地や豆のひき方や作り方でかなり違うことに驚いたことを書きました。それでカカオについて、もう少し詳しく調べてみました。。
I just wrote a topic of chocolate in which I was surprised at very wide variety of tastes by different cacao beans of different production region as well as different process.

このカカオ、中南米の原産でカフェインや利尿作用のあるテオブロミンが含まれ、オルメカやマヤなどで古くから飲料等に用いられ、ウサギや七面鳥、衣服等と取引され、貨幣としても使われるぐらい古くから貴重な作物だったようです（取引レートはウサギ１匹とカカオ豆が１０～１００粒など色々あったようです）。学名”Theobroma cacao”のTheobroma はギリシャ語で「神の食べ物」という意味だそうです。

The plant native to Central and South America has been utilized as beverage from ancient time like Olmec or Maya and used as currency system and traded to a hare, a turkey or a cloth mantle (currency rates were diversified as a hare changed to 10-100 cacao beans). The plants includes alkaloid compounds like a caffeine and a theobromine which has diuretic effect. Scientific name in Theobroma in ”Theobroma cacao” means “Food of the gods” in Greeks.

原産地は中南米ですが、１９世紀半ばに病気が流行し、現在は象牙海岸やガーナなどアフリカ西部が生産の中心で、最近はインドネシアやベトナムなど東南アジアでの栽培も盛んになっています。

After huge damage of disease and pests in central and south America in 19th century, world production is dominated by West African countries including Ivory coast or Ghana, and production in South-east Asian countries like Indonesia and Vietnam are also increasing.

幹に直接、多くの花がつき、そのまま果実になるので、幹から果実がぶら下がるちょっと変わった姿になります。この幹成性という性質、日本などの温帯の植物ではあまり見かけませんが、熱帯の木では時々見ることができます。

Cacao flowers are blooming directly from a stem and fruits are hanging from the same, so they look a little bit funny from me. Such style is not common in temperate climate like Japan but in tropical area it is not so unique.

カカオは、日陰を好み日陰を作る高い木が近くに必要なため、大規模な単一プランテーションには向かず、バナナなどと組み合わせた小農によるプランテーション方式が西アフリカで発達しました。そういった農園での児童労働などの問題には、フェアトレードによる解決など色々と提案されていますが、なかなかに難しい問題です。そう考えると、チョコレートの味が少しほろ苦くなります。

Cacao trees grow well as understory plants in humid forest ecosystems, it means they need tall other trees like a banana and such a combination plantation by small farmer has been developed mainly in West Africa. And these farms are often including severe problems like child labor. This problem often criticized and suggested to be solved by “fare trade” but is not a easy challenge. So the challenge makes me chocolate a little bit bitter.

関連して、ここからはカカオのように熱帯で見られる幹成りの珍しい果物の写真を少し紹介したいと思います。

キュウリの木とも呼ばれるBilimbi　和名：ナガハノゴレンシ, スターフルーツの仲間でキュウリの味がします。Bilimbi; it may be also called cucumber tree as of it's taste.

ソメイヨシノ 開花です/ Today! Somei-yoshino cherry blossoms just blooming in Tokyo

本日、東京のソメイヨシノの開花宣言がでました。平年より５日早いそうです。

Today, the Meteorological Agency declared the blooming of standard cherry tree in Tokyo. It is said five days earlier than average year.

家の近所の桜も、枝の先の数輪が咲いていました。

I found some cherry blossoms of “Somei-yoshino” near my house just start blooming.

いよいよ春ですね。さて花見が楽しみです。
So, spring is now, and I am looking forward to having a cherry viewing party soon.

今日の陽気でもしかしたらソメイヨシノも開花かと、昼休みに靖国神社へ。
東京のソメイヨシノの開花を告げる、標準木のつぼみは今にも咲きそうでしたが・・・

Since it was very warm, I was expecting a Cherry “Somei-yoshino”; the most popular and standard variety would start blooming today. I went to Yasukuni shrine where a standard tree for declaring blooming in Tokyo planted. But just before blooming!

明日にも開花宣言でしょうか？
May be tomorrow?

産地の違うカカオ豆から作るチョコレート専門店 CRAFT CHOCOLATE WORKS/ Chocolate shop which produces different type of chocolates using different country's cacao；CRAFT CHOCOLATE WORKS.

まだ、ホワイトデーの前日でしたが、今日は世田谷三宿にあるCRAFT CHOCOLATE WORKSに行ってみました。　ここのお店、産地の違うカカオ豆の特徴を生かしたチョコレートを作っています。

Today is a eve of “White day”; one month after Valentine's day. In Japan, we have unique custom that male send a gift for female as a reply gift for Valentine's day. So, I went a chocolate shop named CRAFT CHOCOLATE WORKS for selecting my gift to my wife.

店に行くと、豆の種類や豆のつぶし方といった作り方の違いで風味の異なる色んなチョコレートを店員さんが丁寧に説明してくれて、試食もさせてもらえます。試食してみると、店員さんの説明の通り、果物の香りがしたりして、ちょっとびっくりしました。

In the shop, staffs explained very kindly difference of flavors using varieties of beans produced in different of countries as well as different process of production. And they recommended me to try to taste. I was surprised many varieties of tastes and I was able to feel like fruits in some chocolates.

お値段は、さすがに少々しますが、ホワイトデーのプレゼントには、悪くない感じです。時々行って、今度は自分用に選んでみようかなあ。

It is a little bit expensive comparing ordinary chocolate but it is not so bad for a present. And I would try to select for my portion next time.

それに店員さんからは、ソフトクリームもお勧めと言われたので、次回はそれも試してみようかなあ。And a staff recommend me their soft ice cream strongly, so I will try it also next time.

JAXA つくば宇宙センターへ行ってきました。I visited a Tsukuba Space Center of JAXA, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

展示館には人工衛星の実物大の模型などが展示され、日本の宇宙開発の歴史などが自由に見学できます。宇宙ステーションの大きさなどが実感でき、子供のころ宇宙にあこがれた記憶がよみがえってきました。

In an exhibition hall “Space Dome,” I was able to look at many space-related exhibits at close range including full-scale satellite models, real rocket engines and so on. I could learn history of space technology development in Japan. I was able to feel real size of a space station also bring back my memory of dream for space during childhood.

１時間あまりのガイド付きツアーもあるのですが、休日は２ヶ月以上先まで予約でいっぱいなので、今回は展示館と屋外のロケットの模型だけを見てきました。

They also provide a guided tour for 70 minutes , but I found all tours in holidays have been fully booked for more than two months. So I just visited an exhibition hall where we can enter free.

お土産コーナーには、宇宙食や関連のグッズも売られていて、結構楽しめます。

At the souvenir shop, you can buy many related goods such as space foods or novelty goods. So you can enjoy it too.

今度は、ガイドツアーにも参加したいですね。

木蓮とCatfish John/ Magnolia and Catfish John

木蓮（モクレン）が咲き始めました。モクレンの中でも白い花を咲かせるハクモクレンがまず初めに咲き始めるようです。桜と同じように、葉が出る前に花が咲くので大きな白い花がよく目立ちます。同じモクレン科の仲間でもっと大きなの花を咲かせるタイサンボクが葉に隠れてあまり目立たないのと対照的です。

White magnolia starts blooming. White flowers are very attractive since they come earlier than leaves like cherry blossoms comparing less eye-catching flowers of Southern magnolia which are hidden in ever green leaves although they are larger than white magnolia.

モクレンの花が出てくる Catfish Johnというアメリカの古いカントリーソング。
Catfish（なまず）のジョンと呼ばれた黒人の歌ですが、歌い手は白人でしょう。

リンカーンの奴隷解放宣言から１００年以上、キング牧師の有名な演説”I have a dream”から１０年ほどたった１９７０年代前半に作られた歌で、今でも結構歌われているようです。

モクレンには紫色の花もありますが、このモクレンはやはり純白のイメージが強いです。英語の歌詞の後に私なりの訳詞もつけてみました。

When I saw the flower of magnolia, I remembered an old American country song named “Catfish John”. This is a song for an old black man but a song writer should be white man.

The song was released in early 1970's more than 100 years after The Emancipation Proclamation and almost 10 years after famous speech of the “I have a dream “ by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, and the song is still poplar.

In some magnolia have purple or pink flowers, but I believe the flower in the song should be white.
After original English lyrics, I write my translation in Japanese.

“Catfish John”

'Don't be hanging around old Catfish John'
Come the morning, I'd always be there
Walking in his footsteps in the sweet Delta dawn.

Born a slave in the town of Vicksburg, traded for a chestnut mare

アメリカでは大統領選が始まり、人種問題や移民が大きな争点の一つになっています。
今でも歌われているこの歌をアメリカ人がどう感じて聴いているのか、尋ねてみたい気がします。

The presidential race has already started in U.S.A and racial discrimination and refugee/immigration problem are the biggest issues for nomination of the candidate. I would like to ask how American people feels when they listen this song.

ビルと同居する神社、金比羅宮/ Shrine with a modern sky scraper; Konpira shrine

一見、ビルに飲み込まれそうな感じの、虎ノ門の金比羅宮。 Konpira shrine in Toranomon, looks like standing under the tall building.

ビルの柱の間をくぐるように参道を進み、本殿にお参りです。 You can come to a main shrine building through approach between pillar of the contemporary architecture.

本殿前の鳥居の柱には、四方を守る守護神、すなわち東の青龍、西の白虎、南の朱雀、北の玄武が彫られています。見分けることができるでしょうか？写真をクリックしていただければ大きくなります。

A torii; shrine gate in front of the main building has four gods of animals guarding four directions; Azure Dragon（of the East）, Black Tortoise and snake (of the North）, White Tiger（of the West）,Vermilion Bird（of the South) on its columns. Can you distinguish? Picture will be enlarged by clicking.

都会の一等地ならでは風景かもしれません。
Such scene can be seen only heart of a metropolitan.

弥生、３月の花、桜/ Flower of March, Sakura； Cherry blossom

花といえば桜というくらい、日本人に愛されている花、桜。
日本の国花のひとつ、ちなみに、もう一つの国花は菊。ただし、正式に国花が定められているわけではないとか。

When Japanese say simply “flower”, it could mean cherry blossoms in many cases. That shows how Japanese loves cherry so much. Cherry blossom is one of the national flowers of Japan because of its popularity and the other one is chrysanthemum from an emblem of the imperial family. However national flowers of Japan are not officially registered.

花の色や形、咲く時期も様々で、東京だと２月の中頃から４月の中頃まで２ヶ月以上、色々な桜を楽しむことができます。日本には、有名なソメイヨシノをはじめ６００種以上の品種があるといわれています。

There are many varieties of color and shapes as well as blooming season. In Tokyo, we can enjoy many kinds of cherries from middle of February to middle of April. It is said more than 600 varieties are identified including “Somei-Yoshino” which is the most popular variety in Japan now a days.

桜は、ヒマラヤ近郊が原産地とされていますが、日本にも、ソメイヨシノの片親のオオシマザクラなど自生する多くの固有種が存在していますし、もう一方の親、エドヒガンも野生の山桜で、根尾の淡墨桜など長寿の桜としても有名です。

It is said Sakura, cherry blossoms, is originally native to the Himalayan region, but same time in Japan, there are many recognized wild grown and endemic species like “Ooshima-zakura”, one of the parents of Somei-yoshino. The other parents of Somei-yoshino is wild mountain cherry named “Edo-higan” famous as long lived trees including “Usuzumi-Zakura in Neo” which is more than 1500 years old.

桜の季節が、年度の変わり目に当たり、別れと出会いの時にも重なるため、人生の節目の時と桜の花を重ね合わせる人も多いのではと思います。

Full cherry blossoms season is just on a beginning of new school or fiscal year in Japan starting from 1 April, it means cherry blossoms are memorized on meeting and parting at the same time. Many people had many experiences on milestone of the life overlapping scene of cherry blossoms.

既に満開となった早咲きの桜もいくつかありますし、これからも次々と色々な桜が、私たちの目を楽しませてくれることでしょう。

Some varieties have already became full blooming and we can admire beauty scene of many varieties from now.

そして、桜の下の花見は、春を迎える日本人の心を躍らせてくれます。ただ、「桜切る馬鹿、梅切らぬ馬鹿」と言われるくらい、傷には弱い木なので、花見では、決して枝を折らないようにしたいものです。

Many Japanese are looking forward to having cherry-blossom viewing picnic parties since it is very special event for cerebrating new spring. However, in Japan we have a proverb, “The fools who cut cherry trees, the fools who don’t cut Japanese apricot”, it means cherry tree is very sensitive for pruning or scratch on the tree. So, don’t cut a branch of tree, and just to watch.
