北限のパパイヤ. Papaya in the most north fields.

パパイヤといえば、暑い熱帯でいつも木になっているというイメージで、実際、タイでは庭先などにたわわに実っているのを良く見かけました。
タイから日本に戻って、ごくたまに、青パパイアが売られているのを見ても、沖縄あたりで作られているとかなぁくらいに思っていました。

I understand Papaya would be a typical tropical fruit and always be on a tree in tropical area. And I saw many papayas everywhere like in gardens or roadside in Bangkok where I lived in until last year. After I returned to Japan and when I saw green papayas in market sometimes, I was thinking they could be harvested in southern islands like a Okinawa.

ところが最近、このパパイヤ、茨城で、しかも温室ではなく、外で栽培されていると知って訪ねてみました。

However I was surprised to know papaya was cultivated in Ibaragi pref. just north from Tokyo, and not in greenhouse.

ちょうど、畑には低い木に鈴生りに実ったパパイヤが！なんとこのパパイヤ、春に植えて半年でこんなに大きくなるのだそうです。南国の植物なので、霜があたると冬が越せないので、間もなく実を刈り取ると、木はすき込んでしまうのだとか。
このパパイヤの生命力にも驚かされましたが、この栽培法を開発した農園の方に頭が下がります。

I found many papayas were on dwarf trees in the fields, they were planted in this spring and grown in just a half year. This tropical plant can not live through Japanese winter with cold frost.
Therefore, all fruits will be harvested soon and rest of plant will be plowed in.
I was surprised with strong vitality of papaya tree but I was amazed with a farmer who develop this cultivation system.

木が低いので、花もよく見ることができます。

I was able to see flowers very well since the tree is much lower than in Thailand.

直売所で、1kgあたり1000円、1個600円前後で買うことができます。

At the farmer's market next to the farm, you can buy green papaya with 1000yen per kg, it means around 600 yen for a medium size fruit.

さすがに新鮮な果実は、とてもジューシーで、切ると果汁があふれ出てきます。千切りしたパパイヤを他の野菜と炒めるとシャキシャキして美味しいです。

The green mango that I bought was very fresh and I could see juice was spilled out from fruit when I cut.

キャンプ場と隣接している道の駅かつら（茨城）/ A camping site next to a roadside station; Katsura, Ibaragi prefecture.

車中泊をするのに、道の駅の駐車場を時々利用させてもらっているのですが、茨城の那珂川に道の駅に隣接したキャンプ場があるというのを聞き、今回、バーベキューを車中泊を楽しんできました。

I sometime use a roadside station for overnight stay in my car. I just visited a station named Katsura in Ibaragi prefecture since I heard it is connected a camping site along a bank of Naka river.

キャンプで気になるのが、水道とトイレですが、ここのキャンプ場には水道が備えてあり、トイレは道の駅のトイレも使えるということで、なかなか優れもののキャンプ場です。さらに無料で使えるのがうれしいですね。

For selecting camping site, important point could be water supply and toilet facility, and this camping site has free water supply and we can use toilets in a roadside station. That reason I chose this site this time.

夏は川遊びをする家族連れなどで混雑するのでしょうが、今は、それほど混雑していなくて、皆さん、思い思いのスタイルでキャンプを楽しんでいます。

It might be very crowded in summer time by families who would enjoy in river, but in this time, not so many campers are enjoying their camping styles.

道の駅には、新鮮な野菜や、キャンプ用の薪や炭も売られています（また道の駅の隣にはコンビニエンスストアもあり、たいていのものは揃います）。

In the station, you can buy fresh vegetables and local foods as well as firewood and charcoal for camping. And next to the station, your can buy other necessities in a convenience store.

ただし、キャンプで出たゴミは持ち帰り、食器など洗うのも道の駅のトイレは使わないという良識を持って使いたいですね。

Campers can use facility in the station, but be requested not to use water supply system for washing dishes or other dirties and, of course, campers need bring back their garbage to their own home.

この季節、キャンプ場も空いていてよいのですが、日没が早いので、早めに夕食の準備をしないと、こういうバーベキューになってしまいます。

In this season, it is good as not so crowded, but need to consider early sunset time. I had to eat barbecue in a dark as I started a little bit later.

ドバイメトロで移動（ドバイ散策５）/ Moving by Dubai Metro (Dubai report)

今回のドバイレポートでいくつかの見所をご紹介しましたが、ほとんどは半日で駆け足で周った場所です。各観光地間の移動には、ほとんどドバイメトロを活用しました。ドバイの中心部を一部地下と高架部分に分かれて走る、このドバイメトロ、日本の技術を使って無人で走行する近代的な鉄道で、駅や車両もきれいで、観光客にも使いやすい交通手段になっています。

I reported some interesting tourist spots in Dubai, and most of them I visited in a half day of free time. Moving in Dubai, I used a Dubai metro (partly subway and elevated railway in other part). This metro is run by automated system support by Japanese technology and it very useful and clean system for which tourist can use easily.

料金はゾーン制になっていて、ゾーンをまたぐごとに料金が加算されます。チケットは毎回買うこともできますが、複数回乗ることがわかっていれば、パスモのようなプリペイド式のものか１日券を買うほうが便利かもしれません。

Fare of the metro is basically operated as zone system and you need pay additional fare when you get off in other zone. You can buy a ticket on a counter or vending machine each time before entering into the station by checking fare for destination. However it could be convenient to use pre-paid plastic card or one-day free card for tourists who use several times during stay.

プリペイド式のものは、普通席で１枚２５ディルハム（約９００円）で必要に応じ追加チャージして使うことができます。運賃は１区間３ディルハムから３区間７ディルハムまでに分かれています。ただこの２５ディルハムのうち６ディルハムはカード代なので実質は１９ディルハムしか使えません。
１日券は２０ディルハムで１日乗り放題です。滞在が１日だけならこちらのほうが得かもしれません。

Price of a pre-paid card called “Nol card” is UAD 25 (about USD8) but UAD 6 is charge for a card, ( which means you can only use UAD 16 for fares) and you can charge for fee occasionally, fare for 1 zone is UAD 3 and for 3 zones is UAD 7. On the other hand, fare for one-day pass is UAD 20 and you can use any time for all day long.

改札口は、日本と同じように自動改札になっていて、カードを押し付けてゲートを開き出入りします。

車両には、Gold seat　（いわゆる一等車両）と女性専用車がどちらかの端に割り当てられています。Gold seatの料金は普通車両の２倍で、間違って乗ると罰金を取られることがあるそうです。またこのGold seatから普通車両に移動するには女性専用車を通らないと行けないので、特に男性旅行者は気をつける必要があるようです。ホームの乗り口に表示があるので、確認して乗る必要があります。左からGold seat, 女性専用車、そして普通車両のマークです。

車内は結構混んでいます。一方、無人運転なので、先頭車両からは、前をよく見ることができます。

I found many passengers in the train, but you can see outside from front view very easily since no drivers in this train.

ゴールドスークとその周辺（ドバイ散策４） Gold Souq and around area (Dubai report 4)

前の二つの記事ではドバイの近代的な巨大モールとその中の娯楽施設を紹介しましたが、今回は、昔の商都ドバイの雰囲気が楽しめる、ゴールドスークとその周辺の旧市街地の写真を少しだけご紹介しましょう。

I introduced cutting edge amusement facilities in huge modern shopping malls in previous two articles then I would like to write on nostalgic old city area which still remains atmosphere of merchant city in Arabic sea from ancient time. I would show you some pictures of a Gold souq (market) and surrounding area.

アラビア海の交易の中心として栄えたドバイは、東西に流れるドバイクリークの両岸に多くのスーク（市場）を形成してきました。その中でも最も有名なのが金製品を扱う店が３００店以上軒を連ねるゴールドスークです。

Dubai has been developed as commercial city midst of Arabian sea on both banks of Dubai creek which flows from west to east, and developed many souqs, and most famous souq is the gold souq with more than 300 gold shops.

店の前には、誰が付けるのと聞きたくなるような煌びやか装飾が並び、店内では現地のインド系、アラブ系の人や観光客が真剣な目つきで値段交渉です。ちょっと立ち寄った一人旅の私には、とても彼らと肩を並べて値段交渉する体力も気力も残っていなくて、ただ横から眺めるだけにしました。

In front of the shops, many brilliant gold ornaments are displayed including too luminous ones which I cannot image who can wear them. I saw many local Indians or Arabians were negotiating very seriously, I understood myself as a just drop-in traveler had not enough power and brave for negotiating among then and just was watching their negotiations.

クリークには、対岸のオールドスーク地区とをアブラと呼ばれる渡しが頻繁に行き来し、これを見ているだけでも、異国情緒を味わえ楽しかったです。

You can see many Abra; Ferries are clossing on Dubai creek can feel exotic atmosphere by wacting them.

ゴールドスークに隣接する地区は、衣類や日用品などを売っている商業地区になっていて、買い物を楽しむ現地の人で賑わっています。

Near the gold souq, many local people are enjoying their shopping of cloths or daily necessities in old shopping town.

このゴールドスークへは、メトロのAl Ras stationなどから、(少しありますが）散歩をしながら歩いていくこともできます。メトロの駅はどこも清潔で、観光客も安心して使えます（この駅には、昔の写真なども展示してありました）。

You can go to the gold souq from Metro station ( Al Ras station) by walking (15-20 minutes), and all Metro stations are clean and easy to use, in this station old pictures are displayed).

水族館で水上散歩（ドバイ散策３） Boat tour on ‎an aquarium (Dubai report 3)

一つ前の記事で紹介したスキードバイは、モールオブエミレーツという巨大モールにありましたが、今回紹介するドバイ水族館は、もう一つの巨大モール、モールオブドバイの中にあります。ドバイには大きなショッピングモールがたくさんありますが、特にこの二つのモールが有名なようです。

A Ski Dubai that I introduced in the last article is located in a Mall of Emirates and Dubai aquarium, today's topics is located other gigantic shopping mall, Mall of Dubai. It seems there are many shopping mall in Dubai, however these two malls above are most popular and famous malls in Dubai.

世界最大のアクリル製展示パネル（幅約３３ｍ、高さ約８ｍ）の水槽がモールの真ん中でひときわ買い物客の目を引いています。

The largest Acrylic Panel in the world (8.3meter by 32.9 meter) is attracting many shopping customers in the mall.

この水槽を見るだけなら無料ですが、水槽のなかの水中トンネルを通って、水族館の中に入ろうと思えば、いくつかのアトラクションがセットになったコースを選ぶことになります（単に水族館に入るだけのコースはなくなったようです）。 それで私が選んだのは、グラスボトムボートで水槽の上を楽しんだりできるアドベンチャーコース。コースの中では２番目に安い１２０ディルハム（約４，５００円）、やはりドバイは色々なものが高いです。

You can enjoy to see a the panel freely but if you want to enter the aquarium through tunnel in water, you need buy a ticket with some attractions. I was not able to find basic ticket just for entering. So I selected “adventure course” with glass bottom boat tour on the aquarium and price was ARD 120 (around USD 400). As you know price in Dubai are always expensive.

まずは水中トンネルをくぐります。水槽の周りは混雑していますが、料金が少々高いこともあって、トンネルの中はさほど混んでいません。

So entering the aquarium through a tunnel. Comparing crowded around the aquarium, inside the tunnel was not so many guests, since the price is not so cheap.

ここからがアドベンチャーコースのアトラクションが始まります。まずは潜水艦での海底探検？。
これは、潜水艦の形のした揺れる小部屋に入って、スクリーンに映った海底をウミガメの案内で、探検するという、テーマパークのアトラクションのようなものです。実は、本物の潜水艦で水槽の中を進むのかと勝手に思っていたので、アトラクションが始まると？？？という感じ。ガタガタと揺れる潜水艦で海底冒険の味わえるということで小さい子供には楽しいかもという感じです。

First event was exploring under the sea by a submarine, but it was not real explorer. In the shaking chamber with video screen, you can enjoy a virtual tour under the sea guided by an animated sea turtle. To tell the truth, I was expecting to get on a real submarine and explore in the aquarium, I was a little bit disappointed by this attraction. May be small children can enjoy it.

さて、一つ目のアトラクションでちょっと肩透かしだったので、次のアトラクションに期待が高まります。まずは少し潮の香りのする水槽の脇にくると、ライフジャケットをきちっと着てくださいとのこと。

After the first attraction, I was expecting next event. I was told I should wear a life jacket before the getting in a small boat.

そして、小さなボートに乗り込みます。このボートも外から見ると、少しちゃちな感じで、？？？という感じもありましたが。乗り込んでみると、底がすべてアクリル張りになっていて、まるで水の上に直接座っているような感じで、足の下を大きな魚が泳いでいくのを見るのはなかなか楽しいです。よろしければ下の動画をどうぞ。

Although the boat looks shabby than expected from outside, I really enjoyed to see big fishes were swimming just bellow my feet. Please find a video below.

なお、この水槽の中に、スキューバダイビングでもぐることも出来るようで、ライセンスを持っていればすぐにでも、またライセンスを持っていなければ、１時間のレッスンを受けてから潜ることもできるそうです。ただしレッスンまで受けてもぐるには数万円かかるようですが。ライセンスを持っていない私は、レッスンを受ける時間がなくて、今回は潜ることは断念しましたが・・・

If you have a license of scuba diving, you can enjoy diving in the aquarium. In case if you don't, please do not worry, you can also enjoy diving after one hour lesson, but you need pay almost USD 500. This time I did not try to dive since I had no time for taking a lesson.

水族館・動物園には、それなりに広く、巨大なワニなども展示されています。

The aquarium and zoo was bigger than I expected and you can see huge crocodiles in a case.

暗闇に怪しく光るサソリやこういうお客さんのこういう姿をみるとアラビアにいることを感じることができます。アトラクションの選びかたにもよるのでしょうが、２－３時間は十分に楽しむことができました。

When I saw a scorpion was gleaming in dark and some guests were wearing typical costume, I felt I was in Arabic world. I was able to enjoy 2-3 hours in this aquarium.

ドバイでスキー（ドバイ散策２） Skiing in Dubai (Dubai report 2)

砂漠の街、ドバイのショッピングセンターの中に設けられた屋内スキー場・スキードバイ。１０年以上前まで千葉の船橋にあったザウスがそのまま巨大ショッピングモールの中に入った感じです。４人乗りリフトとロープトウがあって、約４００ｍのコースをスキーやスノーボードで楽しむことができます。

Ski Dubai is a ski field in a shopping mall in Dubai in a dune or desert. In Japan, there was an in-door ski-field called a SSAWS until more than 10 years ago, however the Ski Dubai is like a SSAWS with gigantic shopping mall. In side the ski field, a slope is about 400m long with one lift with four seat and one rope tow fro skiers.

この巨大モールの中にスキー場があります。

In this shopping mall Ski Dubai is located.

料金は２時間で２００ディルハム（約７，０００円）（ちなみに１日券は３００ディルハムです）、ウエアと道具のレンタル料も含まれていますが、手袋は自分で買うか準備しなければなりません。ウエアはアノラックとオーバーパンツを借りて、それを自分の服の上に重ねて着ます。
受付で申し込むと、カードを渡され、このカードで、用具のレンタル、スキー場への入場、ロッカーの施錠などを行います。

Entrance fee　is AED 200(about USD 55) for 2 hours and AED 300 for one-day including rental ski wear and ski-set or snow board, but you need to buy or bring your gloves. You can get a plastic card at the counter when you pay the fee, and you can borrow a ski set, use a locker and enter a filed with this card.

スキーの板を借りるには、前もって、身長、体重、技術のレベル、名前や連絡先などを機械から登録しておく必要があります。

You need register your information such as your height, weight and level of skiing as well as name and address before borrowing ski-set.

スキー場へのゲートです、購入したカードをスキーウエアの左腕のポケットに入れておき、センサーに押し付けると、ゲートが開きます。ヘルメットやストックは自分の体に合ったものを適当に選びます。

You can enter the gate by touching the card to a sensor on the gate. You can pick up a helmet or pole fitting your body.

リフト乗り場でも、カードをセンサーに当てると、ゲートが開きます。

For getting on the lift, you can also open the gate by touching the card to the sensor.

カーブしたコース中ほどから全体を見渡したところです。

モール内から、スキー場を見たところです。ゲレンデの下には、雪の滑り台など子供たち向けの遊園地になっています。遊園地のアトラクションは、また別の料金になっています。

This is a view from the shopping mall. And bellow the ski field, there is a play ground for children with snow sliding slope and so on, fee for each attraction apart from skiing.

外気は４０度も超えるドバイで、これだけの施設を冷やすのですから、巨大な冷却施設が必要なのでしょう。
雪質はパウダースノーとはいかないものの、普通に滑るには十分な雪質でした。気温は０度前後でしょうか。レンタルウエアでの防寒だと、このくらいの温度が丁度よいのかもしれません。

For chilling facility, such huge air-conditioners need to be operated, since outside temperature can be over 40 degrees Celsius. Snow is not good quality of “powder show”, but enough to enjoy skiing, I felt the temperature could be around 0 degrees Celsius, and it might be good for skiers with a rental ski-wears since they are not so warm.

石油と資金が潤沢な国だからできるこのリゾート、資源の無駄遣いといえばそうなのですが、ザウスがあったバブル時代の日本と同じような状況なのでしょうか。

The resort can be constructed in Dubai with such rich petroleum and money, and it may be waste of resources. I feel it is a little bit resemble to Japan more than 10 years ago at that time we had the SSAWS and called bubble period.

ドバイ散策１ Dubai report 1

先週末からドバイに来ていますが、日程が詰まっていて、なかなか外出できなかったのですが、早朝の涼しい間に少しだけ散歩してみました。

I am staying in Dubai since last weekend, but I had very few time for going out since business schedule has been very tight except early morning. So I walked around my hotel in early morning and it is good for walking as not so hot.

ドバイの人は教育に熱心だそうで、朝早くから、ひっきりなしにスクールバスがやってきて、子供たちが乗り込んでいきます。

I found many school buses stopped for picking up their students from early morning as I heard parents in here is very enthusiastic for education of their children.

街には、片側数車線もある道路や高層ビルが立ち並んでいますが、歩く人は少ないのか、歩道であまり整備されていないところもあります。舗装されていないところは、細かい砂で、砂漠の上に街が出来ているのを実感します。

There are many skyscrapers and broad boulevard with several lanes, however a sidewalk is not so well consolidated may be because few people would walk on the road. Face of unconsolidated road is covered by fine sand and I understand this city is located on dune or desert.

ホテルの前には、高級車や変わった形の車が・・・

I found many luxurious or funny cars in front of hotel.

高層ビルが立ち並びますが、その中でまさしく群を抜いているのが、ブルジュ・ハリファ。160階建てで、全高（尖塔高）828.0 mで、ビル本体の屋根の高さも636 mとスカイツリーよりも２ｍ高いそうです。

Most eye-catching building in the skyscrapers is Burj Khalifa which has 160 floors with 828m high and even roof top height is 636m; 2m higher than Sky-tree in Tokyo.
