サルスベリ（百日紅）/ Crape myrtle

夏に目立つ花といえば暑さに負けずに咲いている百日紅。読み名は樹皮の外側が剥がれツルツルして猿も登り難そうな幹の姿から、漢字は赤い花を長く咲かせていることからついていますが、花には難解な漢字が多くありますが、花と幹の別々の特徴を知っていないと読めない難易度の高い名前です。

Crape myrtle, in Japanese called “Sarusuberi” which means “Monkey Slip” coming from smooth trunk without bark, but written in Chinese character as of “100days scarlet” which comes from scarlet or red-pink flowers of long time blooming.

百日紅と書きますが、色は赤みの強いものから、ピンクっぽいもの、少し紫色のかかったもの、白っぽいものなど微妙に色みが違うものがあります。

Although written in as 100days of scarlet, color of flower has many varieties of strong red, pinkish, purple red, or whitish.

英語では、 Crape myrtle呼ばれ縮れたギンバイカ（銀梅花・銀盃花）と呼ばれるそうです。以前、日本に来た英国人に、この花の名を問われ、知らなかったので、とっさに”Monkey slipping down”と言ってえらく笑われたことがあります。あの英国人 Crape myrtleという名前知っていたのかなあ？

In English, this flower is called as crape myrtle, as myrtle is more famous in European countries. More than ten years ago, when I was asked name of this flower by a British gentleman who visited to Japan, I replied as “Monkey slipping down” and he laughed very much. I don't know whether he knew “crape myrtle” or not.

昨年まで住んでいた、タイでも、ピンク色のこのサルスベリを見かけることもありましたが、むしろ近種で紫の花を咲かせるオオバナサルスベリのほうをよく見かけました。ただオオバナサルスベリの花色も紫の濃いものから、ややピンクぽいもの白いものもあり、木の大きさや幹の質感も違うものも多く、タイ人もこれらのサルスベリの類をtabaek, salao, inthani 等と混同して呼んでいるようです。

In Bangkok, where I lived until last year, I found scarcely crape myrtle but I often found a “Giant crape myrtle” flower of which is much strong violet or purple. However giant crape myrtle also has varieties of colors, strong violet, shallow purple or pinkish or whitish purple and so on and style of tree has also many varieties. Therefore, these trees also called many names of Thai like, Tabaek, Salao or Inthani.

東京で唯一の道の駅 八王子滝山/ Road-side station “Michino-eki” Hachioji- Takiyama, the only one road-side station in Tokyo.

全国で既に１０００カ所を超え、車で旅行する人にとって今や欠かせない存在となっている道の駅ですが、東京都にはわずか１カ所しかありません。その貴重な道の駅、八王子滝山に先週の日曜の昼下がりに立ち寄ってみました。

“Michino-eki”, Japanese style road side stations are now over 1,000 in nation-wide, and inevitable to travelers by cars. However, only one station is opened in Tokyo metropolitan district. I visited the precious station called “Hachioji-Takiyama” in the afternoon of last Sunday.

八王子の国道１６号線沿いにありますが、行った時には駐車場がいっぱいで、国道から入るのにも少し待たないといけないぐらい混んでいました。

The station is located along the national route 16 in Hachioji city and I had to wait a couple of minutes before entering the station since it was very crowded.

道の駅に訪ねる楽しみは、その周辺の産物（特に新鮮な農産物）や美味しいものを気軽に楽しめることですが、この道の駅にも近隣の農家さんが作った農産物の直売所と、その野菜を豊富に使ったメニューのレストランがありました。私が着いた時は「お野菜バイキング」は終わっていましたが、人気メニューのようでした。

One of the attractive things for visiting the road side station is enjoying a local market where I can buy fresh farmers’ products particularly vegetables or fruits near-by or farmers’ restaurant to enjoy eating very casually. Unfortunately, popular salad buffet where all you can eat had been finished when I arrived.

↑近くの牧場のミルクを使ったジェラートを食後のデザートに/ I enjoyed a homemade gelate using fresh milk produced by a ranch near-by.

東京では土地の値段が高くて、なかなか道の駅を作るのは難しいのかもしれませんが、もう少し増えてほしいなあと思いました。

It could be a little bit difficult to open road side station like this since land price near busy road, however I wish more road side station could be consolidated near Tokyo.

ヘクソカズラ/ Skunkvine

ヘクソカズラ、日本の草花の中でもこれほど酷い名前を付けられている植物もないのではと思います。その強烈な悪臭から名前がついていますが、英名もSkunkvineと名前のとおりです。万葉の時代から屎葛（くそかずら）と呼ばれ、ずっとこのような酷い名前で呼ばれてきたようです。

Skunkvine, in Japanese named “Hekusokazura” direct mean is fart and feces vine, from its string odor like “Skunkvine”. The ancient name in Manyo era, more than 13 hundreds years ago, is also feces vines.

この悪臭は、植物を傷つけると強く出るので、虫などに食べられないように自ら守るために出しているとも言われています。

Smell of the plant becomes more strong when it is hurt, therefore this smell can be protection from attack of insects.

悪臭のわりには、花は可憐で、サオトメバナとの別名もあるようです。

Flower is pretty cute and called “Saotome flower” which means flower of rice planting maiden in May.

秋の気配の北海道/ Autumn breeze in Hokkaido

北海道も少し暑い日がありましたが、お盆になるともう秋の気配が。ナナカマドの木は実や葉が少し色づき始め、ススキも穂が出てきました。夜にはコオロギの鳴き声も。

In Hokkaido after a few hot days in summer, Bon festival season in mid of August, we can feel autumn feeling. Leaves and fruits of Japanese rowan turn to red and ear of Chinese silver grass has just bloomed. And I was able to hear song of cricket in the evening.

そして、われわれはまだ残暑の厳しい東京へ。もう少し涼しい北海道でのんびりしたいけど、そういうわけにはいかないですね。

However we need back to Tokyo still in hot season. I wonder to stay in cool Hokkaido more days, but it could not be possible, and I have to start job after my vacation.

トリカブトと北大植物園/ Monkshood in a botanical garden of Hokkaido University

猛毒で知られるトリカブト、その花の形が烏帽子や鶏冠に似ていることからこの名前がついたと言われています。特に芽吹きのころの葉の形がヨモギやセリ、ニリンソウなどに似ているので、早春の山菜採りの時には特に注意が必要です。

Monksfood known as strong poisonings ans name is come from shape of flower is resemble to monk's food or in Japanese head of chicken or ancient hat for noble people. Shape of leaf looks similar to mugwort or Japanese parsley, therefore it needs to be careful for edible wild plants picking during budding season in spring time.

このトリカブト、その猛毒ゆえに漢方薬などにも使われてきましたが、弱毒化などに専門的な知識が必要で素人は絶対に手を出してはいけないといわれています。北海道にも広く自生し、先住民族のアイヌの人々は狩りの矢毒として使ってきました。トリカブトの毒は世界中で有名ですが、狩に使ったのはアイヌを始め北方先住民の一部の人たちだけと言われており、特にアイヌの人々は、生えている場所の違い等による毒の強さの違いも熟知していて、狩の相手によって使い分けたりしていたそうです。

The monkshood has been used as as medicine using its poison in Chinese herbal medicine but it needs very specified knowledge such as reducing poisonings. Some species belong to this family are native in Hokkaido and native people called “Ainu” has used this plants as poison of arrow. Poison of the monkshood is popular all over the world but only few people including Ainu and northern native people can use this plants for hunting. Ainu people has very rich knowledge of plants and can select indigenous varieties for different animals.

沢沿いの湿った場所に生え、日陰の藪の中などに紫の花を咲かせている姿は、その毒性を知っているからかもしれませんが、ちょっと妖艶な感じがします。実際の花の色はもう少し赤紫ぽく見えたのですが、カメラのフィルターを通すと、少し青っぽくなってしまい、私の腕では、本当の花の色の複雑な色合いが出せなくて残念です。

This plant lives in dank and shaded place near stream, and shape of flowers in dark forest can be seen as sensual maybe as I know its poisonings. I felt actual color seems more purplish and complex but I am a little bit sorry I can not show it with my poor technique and camera.

このトリカブト、北大の植物園の北方民族植物標本園の中に数種類植えられていて、運がよければいくつかの種類の花を見ることができるかもしれません（今回はエゾトリカブトの花しか見られませんでしたが）。また園内には自生のトリカブトも見ることができ、木陰に咲く妖艶な姿も見ることができます。

Some plants in Aconitum family can be seen in a Hokkaido univ. botanical garden (field for northern native people) and may be seen some kinds of flowers in peak season. I can only see a flower of Aconitum sachalinense. And also can be seen native flowers in a forest of botanical garden.

北大植物園は、自然の地形を残しつつ北海道にゆかりの深い植物を中心に展示していますが、札幌市の繁華街の真ん中にあって、緑のオアシスとなっています。園内通路と芝生(ローン）の間には一切柵がなく、自由に芝と通路の間を行き来できるようになっています。それでも芝生がはげないのは、まず通路を作らず自由に入園者に歩いてもらい、自然にできた道を通路にしているため、余分な柵はいらないのだそうです。

In the botanical garden of the Hokkaido Univ., you can see many interesting plants related to Hokkaido in original topology in downtown Sapporo city. There is no fence or rope between lawn and paths and you can freely in and out form the paths. However there is no bare parts in the lawn, because firstly visitors can freely walk around in the lawn and paths can be created naturally.

運がよければ、こんな可愛い動物が出迎えてくれるかもしれません。

厚岸でカキとシマエビを堪能/ Great satisfaction on fresh oyster and Hokkai-shimaebi (Hokkai striped prawn) in Akkeshi

カキで有名な厚岸、少し手前の釧路までは行ったことがあったのですが、厚岸には今まで行く機会がありませんでした。

Akkeshi town famous of delicious fresh oyster, I visited first time in my life for enjoying fresh sea foods.

水温が低いため、じっくりと育ったカキを一年中楽しむことができます。やはり冬が一番美味しいようですが、夏でも十分美味しいです。漁協の直売所には、形や大きさの違う色んなカキが並べられています。店員さんに聞くと、生で食べるには、小ぶりの「カキエモン」が、蒸して食べるには大きい「マルエモン」か「ナガエモン」が美味しいとか。

In here, we can enjoy fresh oyster around the year since temperature of sea water is always low. It is said taste of winter oyster is best but it is still delicious of summer oyster. You can find many kind of oysters in a market of fishermen' association. A lady in the market recommended me small round oyster named “Kakiemon” would be good for fresh eat and larger ones named “Maruemon” or “Nagaemon” could be good for steamed one.

直売所の一角が、イートインコーナーになっていて、店内で買ったカキを自分で剥くためのカキナイフや醤油などの調味料、それに蒸しガキのための電子レンジ等が備えてあって自由に使うことができます。早速店員さんお勧めのいくつかのカキと、それに珍しい生きたホッカイシマエビをいくつか買ってみました。生ガキの殻を剥くのはちょっと大変でしたが、蒸しガキはカキを皿にのせてラップをかけて電子レンジで数分（３個で４分くらい）加熱すると、殻もすぐに開けられ濃縮された味の蒸しガキを簡単に味わうことができました。

You can eat sea-foods by yourself at a table with cutlery, seasonings and microwave-oven provided in a corner called an “eat-in corner”. I bought some kind of oysters recommended by a store clerk, and some living Hokkai striped prawns which are very rare to buy. I struggled to open a shell of fresh oyster but “steamed oyster” cooked by microwave was much easier since shell was already almost opened after a few minutes cooking.

ホッカイシマエビは自分で殻をむいて豪快に踊り喰いです。I removed head and shell of striped prawn by myself and ate it directly in fresh.

お土産に、またいくつかのカキ、茹でシマエビ、ウニ等を買い求め一路帰路に着きました。現在、道東道が白糠まで開通していて、なんとか札幌からでも日帰りできるようになったので、厚岸や釧路に行く機会が増えそうです。

I bought some more fresh oysters, boiled striped prawns and sea-urchins and brought them to home to eat again. Thanks to expanded new toll road “Do-to-dou” to Shiranuka, I was able to one-day trip to Akkeshi from Sapporo area, I think I can have more opportunity to visit these area using new road.

厚岸町の海産物を身にまとった「ウミエモン」君です。 “Umiemon” wearing many sea-food is mascot character of Akkeshi town.

帰り道、夕食には先日某人気テレビ番組でも紹介されていた釧路の「カキラーメン」を食べて帰ってきました。大満足の１日旅でした。

For a dinner, my family enjoyed “Oyster ramen” in Kushiro city that I watched in a popular TV program a few month ago on our back home. I really enjoyed one-day gourmet trip.

サーモンパーク千歳 水族館がリニューアル/ Renewal open of a Chitose aquarium in Salmon park

千歳空港に近い、道の駅「サーモンパーク千歳」がリニューアルし水族館も新しくなりました。支笏湖から流れでる千歳川のほとりで、道の駅の建物も新しくなりました。

A Chitose aquarium in a road sidepark named Salmon park near Chitose river has just renewal open ed recently.

サケを捕獲するインデアン水車のすぐ近くで、水族館の中から、直接千歳川を泳ぐ魚の姿を見ることができます。８月７日には今年の第１号のサケも見られたというので、期待してみましたが、見られたのはウグイとヤマメだけでした。それでも、市内を流れる川でヤマメが見られるのはさすが北海道という感じです。

The aquarium is located near a waterwheel, which is called a “native Indian waterwheel” introduced from North America, and visitors can see inside of river from the facility. It was said that the first returned salmon in this year was confirmed in a few days ago. So I tried to find a salmon but only found a Yamame, a kind of trout, or a Ugui, Japanese dace in the river. However I was interested in that even a Yamame can be seen in the river in the city, it is rich nature of Hokkaido.

運よく、水槽のサケの稚魚に餌をやる時間で元気に餌をとる魚を下から見られて面白かったです。
Luckily, I was able to see a scene young salmon or trout were given feeds from under the water.

外に出て、千歳川の流れにサケがいないかと見ていたら、大きな魚が！！あっサケ？とよく見たらコイのようでした。９月から１２月頃までは、この川を上ってくるサケが多く見られるようです。

After visited the aquarium, I was able to walk in a park along the river, then I found a big fish in the river. Salmon? No it was a carp! You can find many salmon in the river from September to December in every year.

夜明けのフェリーで北海道へ/ Embarkation on a ferry to Hokkaido in dawn

金曜の仕事が終え、東京から夜通し走って青森へ。
夜明けのフェリーで函館に向け出発です。さあ北海道での休暇の始まりです。

After driving through the night from Tokyo, we have arrived at Aomori ferry port in dawn.
SO, it is just beginning of our summer vacation in Hokkaido.

パリの田舎パン屋さんのクッキー/ Cookies of petit traditional bakery in Paris

今回のパリの出張は、買い物する時間があまりないことは前もって妻には告げていました。ただ宿泊先のホテルがエッフェル塔に近いことを伝えると、どこで調べたのか、ホテルの近くに有名なパン屋さんがあるとのこと。Poilaneという小さなお店、田舎パンで有名らしいのですが、クッキーも美味しいとか。
会議のスケジュール次第で時間が空けばねと言うと、何とパン屋さんだけに、朝は7時15分からやっているとか。

As I knew a business trip to Paris in last week would be busy and few time for shopping before the travel and I told my wife so. However my wife checked a little famous bakery “Polane” could be in my walking distance from my hotel since I told my accommodation would be near the Eiffel Tower. The bakery is famous for country style bread like a rye flour loaf.
“Should I have a spare time during my meeting, I would visit the bakery” as I told my wife, but I was told the shop would open at 07:15 in the morning, so it is bakery!

朝の散歩がてら訪ねても、会議の時間には間に合いそうなので、ちょっと行ってみました。このPunitionsというシンプルなクッキー、箱詰めもあるのですが、ちょっと形が悪かったり、色が悪いのを袋詰めで売っていて２００－３００ｇ入りで４－６ユーロぐらい。エッフェル塔の形のもありました。

I visited the bakery in early morning before the meeting and I was able to buy some cookies. In the shops, I could buy a box but also some in plastic bags in which some second class ones such as a little bit broken or strong color. In plastic bags, the price was 4-6 Euro for 200-300g in bags, also I found another one shape of the Eiffle.

バターと砂糖だけのシンプルな味ですが、食べ始めると止まりません。ちなみにPunitionsとは「お仕置き」という意味で、おばあさんが孫に「お仕置きをあげますよ」と言って、そっとあげるのだとか。何気ない街角のパン屋さんのクッキーにパリのお菓子の奥深さを見ることができます。

Taste is very simple with butter and sugar, but difficult to stop once I start to eat. Punitions means punishment in French and comes from episode that grandma gives it by saying “I will give you a punishment” to her grand daughter in secretly.

お店はエッフェル塔の近く、メトロ６号線デュプレックス駅 Depleixからすぐです。本店はサンジェルマンのほうにあるそうです。

The shop is located near Depleix station on 6 lane of Metro, also near the Eiffel Tower. Also head shop is in the Saint-Germain, I heard.
