ヨーロッパのアザミ/ Thistle in Europe

棘のある花として有名なアザミ。その名の由来は、アザム〈傷つける、驚きあきれる意〉がもとで、花を折ろうとすると棘に刺されて驚くからという説もあるそうです。その根をヤマゴボウと称して山菜としたり、あるいは若芽を食べることもあるそうですが、触ると痛いうえ結構大きくなることから、厄介な雑草と扱われることが多いようです（なお、ゴボウの花もアザミの花に似ているそうです）。

Thistle is common flowering plant famous of its sharp prickles. Japanese name “Azami” comes from old Japanese word of “Azamu” which means hurtful or astonishing” since it can hurt people's hand and surprise when he pick it up. In Japan, her young bud or roots, it can be called “wild burdock” can be eaten in some places, however, in general, it is treated as weed and not be loved since it become pretty big and harmful to skin. ( It is said that flower of burdock is resemble to thistle.)

北半球の温帯地帯に広く生息し（世界中で２５０種以上の種）、ヨーロッパでも多く見られます。特にスコットランドの国花として、また国の紋章のデザインにされています。これは、スコットランドを夜襲しようとしたノルウェー兵がアザミを踏んでその痛さから声をあげ、それでスコットランドが救われたとの言い伝えがあり、それ以来、スコットランドの人々は国を救ってくれたアザミを守り神として大事にしているそうです。

Thistles (commonly in tribe Cynareae) is said to be have more than 250 species and grown in mainly temperate in Northern hemisphere, and commonly seen in Europe. Particularly, thistle is the floral emblem of Scotland.
According to a legend, one barefoot soldier cried out in pain when he stepped upon a thistle during operation when Norse army was attempting to sneak up at night upon a Scottish army's encampment. It made Scots to find the presence of the Norse invaders. After that Scottish people believe that thistles guards their country and love it.

いくら、アザミの棘が鋭いといっても、ちょっと大げさだなと思っていたのですが、パリの公園で大きなアザミをいくつか見ることができ、その話も少し納得できました。日本のアザミの花がピンポン玉くらいの大きさだとすれば、花の根元（総苞）がテニスボールほどもあり、またその棘が鋭く尖っており、いかにも痛そうです。音を立てないように裸足で進軍していた兵士が思わず声を上げるもうなずけます。

I was thinking this story was exaggerated story emphasizing prickles too much, but I was able to understand meaning of the story when I found many large thistles in a park in Paris. Usually, size of flower or (involucre) of thistle in Japan thistle is around table tennis ball, however, flower of same in Europe is around tennis ball with sharpen pickles around them. So I understands story of barefoot soldier who cried.

園芸品種として改良もされているようで、紫や赤いきれいな花を咲かせていますが、やはり棘は鋭そうです。

There are some cultivated species with beautiful flowers but seems with still strong prickles.

サマータイムとゆう活と/ Summer time and “Yu-katsu” in Japan

今、パリに来ています。７月のパリは昼が長く、さらにサマータイムなので夜の１０時ころまで明るくて少し時間の感覚が変わってきます。朝も６時前には明るくなってくるので、夜は８時間くらいしかない計算になります。

I am now in Paris, and enjoying long day time in July. Since here in Paris is now in summer-time, so even after 22:00, still dimly bright. In morning, just before 6:00, it becomes faintly light. It means about only 8 hours of night in July.

パリの緯度は４８度を超えていて、樺太と同じくらいの緯度なので、稚内よりさらに夜が３０分くらい短いことになるようです。今の稚内は４時頃に夜明けになりますが、７時過ぎには日没になるようで、
日本では夏至のころでも８時を過ぎて明るいところはほとんどないようです。

Since latitude of Paris is higher than 48 degrees and similar to Karahuto islands, it means higher than any places in Japan. It means night time is shorter than Wakkanai, the most northern place in Japan now, where morning begins around 4 and evening ends after 7 o'clock, since no summer time in Japan.

緯度が高く冬の太陽が極端に少ないヨーロッパでは、夏の間に、できるだけ日差しを楽しもうとサマータイムが作られたのがよくわかります（夜明けの時間が少し遅くなっても、その分夕方の日差しを楽しもうということだと思います）。 日本でも、サマータイムの導入が何度か検討されましたが、結局、なかなか実現していないようです。

Since sun lights in winter is very scarcely, many people love to enjoy under sun lights in short summer, I understand that's a reason why European people introduce summer-time since quite long time ago. Japan has been trying to introduce summer time several times but not happened.

今年は、「ゆう活」といって自主的なサマータイムをとることを政府も推進していて、レジェンド葛西さんが職場からスキージャンプで退社するＣＭが流れてます。私の職場も「ゆう活」にとりくんでいて、７月から終業時間が１時間早くなりました。折角の機会なので夕方の時間をなんとか有効に使えればと思ってはいるのですが（居酒屋で飲む時間が１時間長くなっただけだと言われないように）。

This year in Japan, Government encourage to take voluntary summer time by using a new word “Yu-katsu; it means effective use evening time”. And my office is also introduce this system from July. I am trying to use this system effectively and efficiently and I would try to avoid criticism that only one hour could be wasted for spending time in “Izakaya; Japanese casual bar”

こうして１０時まで明るくて、短い夏の太陽を楽しんでいる人をみると、ちょっと羨ましいと思いながらも、日本にこの制度が定着するのかなと思っていまいます。

I am little bit envy to see people enjoying summer time in here and dubious about this system can be fitted to Japanese situation.

自動販売機ミュージアム/ A museum of vending machine

赤城山麓にある「わくわく自販機ミュージアム」。世界最古の自動販売機；２２００年以上前のエジプトの聖水の自販機（レプリカ）から、懐かしの自販機、それに最新の自販機の仕組み等を展示しています。

“Waku-waku Jihannki museum”; a museum specified to vending machines, where you can see many machines from the oldest vending machine in Egypt more than 2,200 years ago (replica) to cutting-edge one. Also you can find many old-fashioned and nostalgic machines mainly 30-40 years old. In the museum, it is displayed mechanism of advanced machined. The museum is located bottom of Mt. Akagi in Gunma prefecture.

自販機の歴史や仕組みが学べて子供にも楽しいし、私のような中年には子供の頃の記憶が蘇ってきて懐かしいです。

Therefore children can learn history and mechanism of vending machine and middle aged visitors can remind their old childhood days memories with vending machines.

The museum is located in a factory of Sanden Co. which is one of the leading maker of vending machine in Japan, so you need to register in advance for entering inside of the factory. ３つの菩提樹/ Three kind of “Bodaijyu”; Bodhi, Banyan and Linden tree

(↑バンコクのWat Chana Songkhram境内の２００年を超えるインドボダイジュ(Ficus religiosa), Bodhi tree (Ficus religiosa) in Wat Chana Songkhram in Bangkok, which is morethan 200years old)

お釈迦様がその木の下で悟りをひらいたと言われる菩提樹。乾燥したインドの大地でお釈迦様にそっと日陰を提供しているイメージがあります。
一方、シューベルトの歌曲集「冬の旅」の中の有名な菩提樹。この歌の菩提樹は厳しい冬の大地に凛と立っているイメージがあります。
この二つの菩提樹、どうも結びつかないなあと思っていたら、やはり全く別な木でした。

The tree under which the Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama) was enlightened or awakened is said Bodhi or Bo tree (Ficus religiosa) ( In Japanese Bodaijyu) and name comes from enlighten in Sanskrit or Pari in old India.
On the other hand, famous song “Der Lindenbaum” (Linden tree) of Schubert is also called “Bodaijyu” in Japanese. From this song, I have an image of a solid tree standing in cold winter which could be very different image from Bodhi tree in India.

お釈迦様がその下で悟りをひらいたといわれる木は、インドボダイジュ(Ficus religiosa)英語ではBodhi 又はＢｏ　ｔｒｅｅと呼ばれ、サンスクリット語やパーリ語の菩提（自然の姿、悟り）からその名前が付けられている、イチジクの仲間の木です。
一方、日本では、このインドボダイジュが寒すぎて育たないので、葉の形が似ている中国原産のシナノキの仲間のTilia miquelianaを菩提樹と称してきたようです。
そしてシューベルトの歌曲の中で歌われる菩提樹は、この日本の菩提樹の仲間Tilia europaeaでインドボダイジュとは区別して日本ではセイヨウボダイジュやセイヨウシナノキとも呼ばれいます。
ドイツ語でDer Lindenbaum、英語ではCommon lime tree やLinden treeと呼ばれるヨーロッパ原産のこの木が、回りまわって遠い日本で菩提樹と呼ばれているのは何か不思議な気がします。

I try to find a reason such completely different two trees is called same name of “Bodaijyu”, and I found in Japan other tree “Tilia miqueliana” native in China called “Bodaijyu” since original Bodhi tree (Ficus religiosa) cannot live in Japan because of too cold. Since shape of leaf of Tilia miqueliana and Ficus religiosa is resemble, the Tilia miqueliana is introduced from China as “Bodaijyu” instead of Ficus religiosa. And then Tilia europaea; Der Lindenbaum in Germany or Common lime tree or Linden tree in English is called “western Bodaijyu” in Japan as belong to same family of Tilia miqueliana. This European tree called quasi-Bodhi tree in Japan is very interesting thing for me.

日本でボダイジュの名がついている木がもう一つあります。ベンガルボダイジュ（Ficus benghalensis）、学名からも分かるとおりインドボダイジュ同じくイチジクの仲間です。英語ではBanyan あるいはIndian banyanと呼ばれています。

In Japan, we have another tree called “Bodaijyu” （Ficus benghalensis） actually called “Bengali Bodaijyu” which is called Banyan or Indian banyan tree and same family of “Ficus religiosa”, Ficus is scientific name of fig's family.

お釈迦様が悟りをひらいたのは、このベンガルボダイジュの下だったとの説があったり、Bodhi の下で悟りをひらいたお釈迦様が、その後Banyanの下で７日間瞑想をしたともいわれており、この木も神聖な木として信仰されています。この木は枝を横に広げるとともに気根をたらし、その姿から長寿のシンボルにもなっています。

この木の生命力は凄く、他の木に巻きついて枯らしてしまういわゆる絞め殺しの木で、アユタヤのワットプラマハタートで仏頭を包み込んだり、アンコールワット近くのタプロム寺院の遺跡の建物に進入してきている木もこの木か、もしくは近縁の木です。沖縄などに育つガジュマル（Ficus microcarpa）も近い仲間です。この木のパワーとお釈迦様の瞑想のとは全くイメージが違うところがかえって面白い気がします。

Banyan is also sacred tree and it is said under the tree, Buddha was enlightened or made meditation for 7 days. It has many aerial prop roots with wide open shape of branches and symbol of longevity with its power of living. It is called also “strangler fig” which growing up with host tree and then kills the host tree later. A famous tree with Buddhist head in Wat Phra Mahathat in Ayutaya or trees of Ta Prohm temple in Angkor, Cambodia is also this tree or near species in Ficus family. Gajyumaru （Ficus microcarpa） in Okinawa islands also same family of these trees. Powerfulness of this tree can be a little bit different image of meditation of Buddhist and it could be also interesting.

少し前に沙羅双樹のことも書きましたが、こうして木の名前も知れべて見るといろいろな意味があって面白いですね。

南房総へ小旅行/ Petit-trip to south Boso peninsula

梅雨の晴れ間の休日、せっかくの天気を楽しむため房総へ。ただ、家族の予定もあって、東京を出発したのは、土曜の夜になってから。途中で夕食をとったり、スーパー銭湯で汗を流したりで、館山に着いたのは、ほとんど深夜。

I visited a Boso peninsula for enjoying rare weekend fine days during rainy season. I started from Tokyo Saturday night since my family had some schedule to do before leaving. I arrived at Tateyama city, head of the peninsula, almost midnight after we enjoyed dinner and “super-sento”, Japanese style spa facility, on the way to there.

道の駅の駐車場で車中泊して、朝から沖の島海水浴場へ。まだ海開き前だったのですが、久しぶりの良い天気ということで、浜には、朝早くからバーベキューをする人やシュノーケリングをする人で結構混雑していました。

We took a short sleep in our car on a parking lot in “Michino eki”; a road side station and went a public beach named “Okinoshima” near there. I found many people were enjoying on the beach by eating BBQ or snorkeling from early morning even before official opening of the beach, which will be next week.

一応シュノーケリングの道具は持っていたのですが、今回は、潮だまりの周りで小魚やカニを見て楽しむだけにしました。途中の保田漁協直営の「ばんや」で少し遅い朝ご飯を食べて、渋滞を避けて昼過ぎには東京に帰ってきました。

My snorkeling items were in my car but I decided not to enjoy snorkeling this time and just watching small fishes or other animals in a tide pool, and then returned to Tokyo before traffic jam.
On my back way to Tokyo, My family and I took brunch in a restaurant named “Banya” which is operated by fisherman’s cooperation in Hota.

渋滞を避けて行けば、都心からでも2－3時間で行けて、自然と海の幸が楽しめる南房総。ちょっとした小旅行で心のリフレッシュができました。

South Boso peninsula with rich nature and delicious sea foods is good destination for short trip by 2-3 hours from downtown Tokyo in case of no traffic jam.

近鉄特急で大阪から名古屋へ/ From Osaka to Nagoya by Kin-tetsu express

先日、大阪から名古屋に行くのに久しぶりに近鉄特急を使ってみました。大阪なんばから名古屋まで２時間１０分ほど。名古屋の到着時間だけを考えたら、新幹線を使ったほうがずっと早く、「なんば」から新大阪への移動を含めても、約５０分早く名古屋に着くことができます。

I took a express train by Kintetsu railway from Osaka to Nagoya recently and it may be first time more than twenty years. It took about 2 hours and 10 minutes and if I took a Shin-kannsen (super express bullet train) I would have arrived about 50 minutes earlier than Kintetsu including time for changing by Shin-Osaka station.

ただ、乗り換えの面倒や、車内で少し仮眠をとれることを考えて（新幹線の新大阪－名古屋間は約５０分ですし、万が一寝過ごすと、次は新横浜というリスクがあり、仮眠をとるのはちょっと勇気が要ります）、近鉄特急を選択しました。

However considering tiresome for changing train and relax time in express, since net time in Shinkansen could be only 50 minutes and I had to go to Shin-yokohama if I overslept in the train, it could be difficult to sleep in the shinkansen.

久しぶりの近鉄特急の車体はなかなかに綺麗で、車内では、運転席視点の映像も楽しめて、結構快適な列車の小旅行を楽しむことができました。

Train of Kinnetsu was pretty good and I was able to see a video view from drivers seats like a plane. It was good short trip from Osaka to Nagoya.

ジャカランダ/Jacaranda

春または雨季の始まりに薄紫色の花を咲かせるジャカランダ。中南米の熱帯から亜熱帯の原産の花で、残念ながら日本ではあまり見られないようです。

Jacaranda, we can find flowers at spring time or beginning of rainy season, native to tropical or sub-tropical region in Central-South America, however seldom seen in Japan.

１０年ほど前にメキシコシティで満開の並木を見ました。残念ながら、その時は写真を撮り損ねたので、いつかまた見たいなあといつも思っていました。

I have a experience to admire beautiful full blossom in spring time in Mexico city more than ten years ago. But, unfortunately, I was not able to take pictures of this beautiful scene that time and I have been wondering to see it once again.

前に住んでいたバンコクでも少しは見ることができましたが、バンコクの街路では同じ紫のオオバナサルスベリや黄色のゴールデンシャワーのほうが目立って、素敵なジャカランダを見ることはついにできませんでした。
I was able to see this tree in Bangkok where I lived recently, but Jacaranda was not so attractive than violet flower of Giant crape-myrtle or yellow flower of Golden shower on the streets in Bangkok.

このたび、２５年前に大阪花博が開かれた「咲くやこのはな館」で、このジャカランダが咲いていると聞いて、訪ねて見ました。主温室の横に結構立派な木（多分、花博の時に植えられたのでしょう）に数房の花が咲いていました。

I visited a giant greenhouse named “Sakuya-Konohana-kan” which was build in 1990 as a main pavilion of International Osaka flower exposition since I heard Jacaranda was blooming in this facility. Besides the greenhouse, several clusters of flowers were blooming on a quite big Jacaranda which could be planted at the time of the flower exposition.

雨季と乾季のある地方では、乾季に落葉した枝から雨季の初めに花が一斉に咲くそうで、花だけの綺麗な姿が見られるのですが、ここのジャカランダは葉と花が一緒に咲いていました。あの見事なジャカランダの花の並木を見るには中南米に行かないとだめなようですね。

A tree glowing in rain and dry seasons falls leaves during dry season and blooms at the beginning of rain season, therefore flower looks more beautiful since only flowers can be seen on their blanches. The tree I found was blooming with their leaves on the blanches. I wonder I should go to Mexico city or other city in Central-South America for finding wonderful full blossom of Jacaranda on the streets.

このジャカランダの花、少し桐の花に似ていることから、和名ではキリモドキと呼ばれることもあるようです。薄紫の桐の花も素敵ですね。

The flower of Jacaranda resembles to a flower of a Empress tree (Kiri in Japanese), it sometimes called Kiri-modoki (quasi-Kiri) in Japanese. I also like color of flower of a Empress tree.

４０年目の同窓会/ A reunion party; 40 years after graduation

中学校を卒業して４０年、故郷の友達からの同窓会の誘いを受けて、出席しました。

卒業後、親しい友とは何度か会ってきましたが、学年全員の同窓会に出るのは初めてで、４０年ぶりに会う友達も多く、楽しみな反面、会っても話題があるのかどうか、ちょっと不安でした。

As a 40th anniversary after graduation of junior high, I attended a reunion party in my home town.

I had some opportunities to meet closest friends of my schooldays, but this is the first time for me for attending the party for all garduates in my age. Therefor I had some worries for findng same topics with someone whom to meet first time after 40 years, however I was very eager to attend the party.

だけど会が始まるとそんな不安は、全く吹き飛び、あっという間に４０年前の中学生に戻っている自分がいました。

However my uneasy feeling had been gone instantly after the party started, and I found myself was exactly same as in my schooldays, .

高校を卒業し故郷を離れ、引越しを１０数回、自分にとっては、時々帰省はするけど、多分もう住むことはない故郷。
その故郷にずっと住み続けている人、近くに住んでいる人、久しぶりに帰ってきた人、いろんな人がいたけれど、誰とでも、昔の話から最近の話題まで淀みなく話が行ったり来たりできるこの不思議な感じ。

I left my hometown after my high-school graduation I moved my home more than 15 times inside and outside Japan. I sometimes return to my old home town several days, but cannot live in there again. Someone still live in home town, and someone live outside but near, and someone like me far from hometown, but I was able to talk with anyone on old topics of our school days as well as recent topics without hesitation, I felt special feeling like a magic.
