新宿御苑を散策/ Stroll in the Shinjyuku-gyoen garden

前の記事で書いた沙羅の木を見たくて新宿御苑の温室に行ったのですが、ついでに都会のオアシス新宿御苑を散策してきました。

I went to Shinjyuku-gyoen garden for watching a Sal tree as I wrote in the last article. And I explore the garden which called a oasis in the metropolitan.

新宿御苑は環境省の管理になっていることもあり、入場料200円で温室も楽しめ、広い園内をゆっくりと散策することができます。

The garden is a national park operated by Ministry of Environment Protection, so admission fee is very reasonable as JPY 200 including entering to a greenhouse.

園内に入ると、日本で最も大きな花を咲かせるダイサンボク（モクレンの仲間）がちょうど見ごろです。ヒマラヤスギの幼果の面白いですね。

I found full blossoms of southern magnolia which belongs to magnolia family and largest flower in Japan. Funny shape of a Juvenile pine cone of deodar.

朝一番で入場したので、芝生で休憩していたカメ（クサガメ？）が慌てて池に戻っていこうとしています。池の周りではヤンマ（ウチワヤンマ？）がしきりに縄張り争いをしていました。シオカラトンボは日向ぼっこです。トカゲ（ニホントカゲ）も久しぶりに見ました。少し若い固体でしょうか？

As I entered the garden from opening hour ; 9:00 am, I could find a Reeves' was rushing back to a pond from the lawn. Clubtail dragonflies were fighting their territories over a pond. A white-tailed skimmer was on a rock under the sun. It’s been a long time since I saw a Japanese five-lined skink.

温室内では、日本のランなど絶滅危惧種の保存・繁殖も行われているようです。

Some endangered species including Japanese native orchids are conserved and propagated in greenhouses.

夏椿と沙羅双樹/ Deciduous Camellia (Natsu-Tsubaki) and Sal tree

祇園精舎の鐘の声、諸行無常の響きあり。沙羅双樹の花の色、盛者必衰の理をあらはす。
有名な平家物語の冒頭の文です。

“The sound of the Gion Shōja bells echoes the impermanence of all things; the color of the sāla (Sal) flowers reveals the truth that the prosperous must decline.” This is a famous sentence of beginning of “Heike story” (English sentence was quoted from Wikipedia).

（ひっそりと咲いている夏椿（東京都世田谷にて）/ Deciduous Camellia; blooming in obscurity; Setagaya Tokyo)

お釈迦様は、クシナガラで、弟子アーナンダに付き添われ、二本の沙羅の木の間に横たわり入滅された伝えられています。このため、沙羅の木（沙羅双樹）は仏教では聖なる木として信仰を集めてきました（二本ずつの沙羅の木が四辺に植えられていて、お釈迦様入滅の際に、それぞれの一本ずつ四本の色が白く変わったとの話もあるようです）。

In the village of Kusinara of the Buddha's last days, it is said Buddha told Ananda to prepare a bed for him with its head turned towards the north between two Sal trees. Therefore the sal tree has been respected as a sacred tree by Buddhists. ( It is also anther story that there were four sets of two sal trees on four sides, and flowers of one tree of each pair had changed from green to white when the Buddha had passed away.)

このクシナガラに生えていた沙羅の木は高級木材としても有名なチークの仲間でShorea robustaという木ですが、日本では寒すぎて育たず、昔から夏椿（Stewartia pseudocamellia）を沙羅双樹と呼んできたようです。従って、冒頭の沙羅双樹もこの夏椿をさしているのではないかと思われます。

Sal tree in the Kusinara believed as Shorea robusta which is a member of same family of a teak tree famous as precious woods, but this plant cannot live in Japan except in a greenhouse. So, In Japan another tree, Stewartia pseudocamellia; Japanese Stewartia or Deciduous Camellia has been called as Sal tree. It is believed a Japanese Stewartia should be called as Sal trees in the famous Heike story.

初夏に可憐な白い花を一日だけ咲かせ、夕方には散ってしまう夏椿。お釈迦様の入滅の時の色を変えたというエピソードや平家物語の話とも重なり、その姿は少し悲しげにも見えます。

A pretty one-day flower blooming early summer looks a little bit sadly with my imagination of Buddha and Heike-story.

その沙羅の木(Shorea robusta)、今も仏教の盛んなタイやミャンマーでは、今度は暑すぎで、あまりうまく育たないようで、同じ上座部仏教のスリランカの高僧によりもたらされたされる別の木（Couroupita guianensis: 英名cannonball tree）を沙羅又はランカの沙羅と呼んで、お寺などに植えているようです。

The Shorea robusta is said that this flower cannot bloom well in Thai or Myanmar since it might be too hot or too humid for the tree. So, another tree, Couroupita guianensis (English name; cannonball tree) which was introduced from same Theravada Buddhism country Sri Lanka. The tree called in Thai as a Sal or a Sal Lanka, and planted in some temples. (When I found this tree in the Ananda temple in Bagan, Myanmar, a name-plate showed as Shorea robusta).

（私が以前、見かけたミャンマー・バガンのアーナンダ寺院のcannonball treeにはShorea robustaの名前が書かれていました）

クシナガラにあった沙羅の木(Shorea robusta)は、日本ではいくつかの温室で育てられているようですが、なかなかその花を見るのは難しそうです。

Some Shorea robusta can be found in greenhouses in Japan, but it could be difficult to see flowers of them.

２－３年前の春には滋賀県草津の植物園で咲いたこともあるようですが(詳しくは下の記事をご覧下さい）、今年は難しかったみたいです。

なお、この沙羅双樹、お釈迦様生誕の場所に咲いていた無憂樹(Saraca asoca, 英名 Sorrowless tree)、その下で悟りを開いたといわれる菩提樹(Ficus religiosa, 英名Bonhi　tree) とともに仏教の三聖樹ともいわれるようですが、あとの二つの木についても色々な話があるのですが、そちらは、また後ほど。

The Shorea robusta is called one of the three sacred tree in Buddhism with Saraca asoca, English name; Sorrow-less tree which was grown on the birth place and Ficus religiosa, English name; Bonhi tree under which Buddha was enlightened. I would write other articles on these trees.

目黒川緑道を散策しました その２/ Rambling along a Pedestrian path of Meguro river part 2

前回の目黒川緑道散策の続きです。正確にいえば烏山川緑道編ということになります。

This is part 2 of walking of pedestrian path of Meguro river, actually it is part of Karasuyama green path.

烏山川緑道に入ると、せせらぎの幅が少し狭くなります。/ Stream became narrow when I entered into Karasuyama river.

そして、三宿通りを渡ると、/ And then I passed across a Misyuku road,

小川はなくなり、道路だけになります。少し開けて明るい感じになりました。Path is now without stream, and becomes wider open space.

地元の人に大事にされているのがわかります。/ I can find the path is loved by people who live around here.

そしてまた、水路が横に出てきますが、今度はかなり人工的な感じです、色々な表情の遊歩道が楽しめます。
And then you can see water flow again, but it looks more artificial, so we can enjoy a lot of face of the path.

この遊歩道を歩いていて、嬉しいのが、結構、花に標識がついていることです。
I was able to enjoy to learn name of flower or tree along the path by reading a panel for the plant.

アセビ/ Japanese andromeda/ Pieris japonica

こんな立派な標識もありますが、 / Some plates were so good with many information, but

手作りの、木や草に巻きつけただけの標識もたくさん見かけます/ Also many hand-written name plates attached directory to flower or trees.

シモツケ/ Japanese spiraea/ Spiraea japonica

このほうが正確にどの花かよくわかります。/ By the plates attached to the plant, I was able to know the name without misunderstanding.

お陰で、今までよく知らなかった花や木の名前を随分と覚えることができます。ここからは一部の花ですが、少し珍しい花を標識ととともに紹介しましょう。

I was able to learn many name of flowers this time, and I would like to show some attractive pictures of flowers.

三軒茶屋の茶沢通りに出ました。遊歩道はまだ続くのですが、/ After across a street named Cyazawa from Sangenchaya station, the pass is still going on, however,

茶沢通りが歩行者天国になっていて、マグロの解体ショーや地域のバザーなんかも開かれていて、そちらのほうで、買い物をして、本日の散策は終了にしました。

I turned to the left to chyazawa street since the street was a temporary car-free street on Sunday, and I enjoyed shopping at a fish market on freshly cut tuna fish or a bazaar operated by voluntary group.

また、今度時間があったら、烏山川緑道の続きや、今回行かなかった、北沢川のほうにも行ってみたいと思います。

I would visit other parts of public path next time and would like to report later.

水辺の散歩なので、虫除けを塗ってから出かけたほうがよいかもしれません。(写真のアメンボは関係ありません、念のため）
I would recommend you to bring an insect repellent if you want visit the pedestrian path. (picture of a water strider is no relation to insect repellent)

目黒川緑道を散策しました/ Rambling along a Pedestrian path of Meguro river

春の桜で有名な目黒川、花の季節は池尻大橋から中目黒までの区間は大勢の人で賑わいますが、今は緑豊かな桜が枝を川の上に伸ばしています。

Meguro river, famous of cherry blossom of spring and many people come to see full blossom of cherry from Ikejiri bridge to Nakameguro. Now we can see green branch of cherry tree over the river.

目黒川にかかる２４６号、下流側から見ると普通の橋ですが/ A bridge of Route 246 on the Meguro river, it looks an ordinary bridge, however,

左が目黒川、右側の玉川通り（国道２４６号線）から上は、せせらぎが流れる遊歩道になっています。
Left side from here is stream of Meguro river but upstream of right side is public path with small creak.

せせらぎの横には、結構色々な草木も植えてあり、花菖蒲もかろうじて残っていました。
Along the small stream, many plants or trees are planted and I can find a Japanese iris although it looked almost end of season.

せせらぎには入らないで下さいとの看板が。人は入れませんが、鳥たちには憩いの場所になっているようです。A signboard requests to refrain from entering into a flow, and it offers resting place for birds.

鯉の泳いでいる場所もあります。鯉はほんとに強い魚のようですね。
You can find carps in a flow since they can live in even serious condition.

出発点から約７００ｍで北沢川と烏山川の緑道に分かれます。
About 700m from start point, the path is divided to Kitazawa river and Karasuyama river.

右に曲がった北沢川の景色はこんな感じですが/ If you turn to right to Kitazawa river, you may find such scene,

今日は左側の烏山川の緑道を進むことにしました。
But I went through on left side for Karasuyama river.

少し長くなったので烏山川緑道のことは次の記事で紹介します。
I will write for Karasuyama green path on next article.

ドクダミ/ Fishwort

繁殖力旺盛なこの花。調べてみると、名前は「毒矯み」（毒を抑える）という意味で、解毒作用や魚の臭みを抑える香草として用いられるところから来ているのだとか。

This very powerful and productive plants Japanese original meaning is anti-poison or anti-fish-odor.

ただ、ベトナムや中国では香草や野菜としても食べられているそうだが、日本ではドクダミ茶以外にはあまり利用されず、臭いが強く日陰のやっかいな雑草というイメージが強いようです。名前からも、なんか毒がありそうで、またクセも強くて敬遠されているイメージが強い気がします。

Therefore it is said this plant is used as herb or medicine in China or Vietnam. However, in Japan it is scarcely used except sometimes used as dried herb tea. And it seemed as embarrassing weed in shaded garden. And also it could be misunderstood as poisoning plant and too string smell.

花は可憐な感じもしますが、そんなこと言うと庭に生えてくるドクダミと日々苦労されている人には叱られるかも？

The flower looked quite cute but many gardeners who are fighting this plant in their garden might blame my opinion.

ゴマダラカミキリ/ Asian longhorn beetle

家の近所の街路樹の根元で見つけたゴマダラカミキリ。住宅街の何の変哲も無い街路樹にいたので、ちょっと懐かしいなあと思って、写真に。

I found a Asian longhorn beetle at bottom of a street tree near my house in Tokyo. I took a shot since it has been long long time ago I found it last time.

このカミキリ虫、結構きれいで目立つので、子供の頃に、カブトムシやクワガタを取りに行った山でも時々見かけましたが、何故かあまり人気がなくてほとんど手にすることもありませんでした。

A longhorn beetle was eye-catching, I found it sometimes in woods or copse when I went to hunting for rhinoceros beetle or stag beetle in my childhood days, however longhorn beetle was not so popular for boys, so I had few experience to catch it.

カミキリムシ、髪切虫と書くようですが、噛み切り虫とも書かれ、大きな顎で噛まれると結構痛いのですが、その割りに、カブトのように虫同士ではケンカもしないし、タマムシほどのはっとするような美しさではなかったので、あまり人気がなかったのかもしれません。

A longhorn beetle in Japanese “Kamikiri-mushi” means hair cut bug or bite-off bug, it is reflecting strong jaw of it. However it is not so popular since it has no fights each other like longhorn beetle or no attractive beauty like buprestida jewel beetle.

子供に人気がないだけでなく、果樹や街路樹の木の中を食い進むため、害虫として農家の方などからは嫌われているようです。

They are not only unpopular to boys also hated by farmers or gardeners since they can damage trees by eating inside of trees.

入梅と麦秋と田植えと / Barley harvesting and rice transplanting just before rainy season

関東の入梅近い昨日、今にも雨が降りそうな天気の中、足利に出かけてきました。東武伊勢崎線の車窓からは、丁度、麦秋の景色を楽しむことができました。

I had a business trip to Asikaga city just before rainy season under dark cloud. I was able to see scene of barley harvesting (in Japan we call it barley autumn) from window of a train on Tobu-Isezaki line.

入梅前に収穫されて美味しいビールになって欲しいと、農家の方に心の中でエールを送りました。

I had a feeling of thanks for farmers since it would become tasty beer after good harvest.

そして、収穫が終わった田んぼには、次々とお米が植えられていきます。

Just after harvesting, then rice has been transplanted one by one.

足利までの短い日帰り出張でしたが、ちょうど季節の変わり目の景色を楽しむことができました。

I was able to enjoy to see a changing season during one day short trip to suburb of Tokyo.

雨のアジサイ/ Big leaf hydrangea in the rain

蕾が開くにしたがい日一日と色を濃くしていくアジサイ。爽やかな初夏の光を浴びる姿も綺麗だけど、この微妙なアジサイの色が映えるのはやはり雨にうたれた姿。

Flower colors of big leaf hydrangeas become deeper day by day after blooming. It is beautiful against strong sunshine in early summer but much more attractive to see rich variety of colors in the rain.

雨を含んで瑞々しい色になった姿は、晴天が続いていた東京でほっとさせてくれる。

It could be a relief for me to see fresh flower in the rain after some fine and hot days in Tokyo.

このアジサイの色、一般的に土が酸性ならば青、アルカリ性ならば赤になるといわれてるそうです。（リトマス紙とは逆ですね）。これは 土の酸度により吸収できるアルミニウムの量に差が出るためで、さらに土の中に動物の死体等が埋まっていると、そこから出るリン酸にアルミニウムが結合され、アジサイが赤くなるとか。

The color could be reflected acidity of soil, generally acid soil makes their color blue and alkaline makes them red. It could be opposite to Litmus test? It is said that aluminum ion absorbed by hydrangea affected by acidity of soil and then phosphate acid which could be solved from dead body of animal can obtain aluminum from absorption.

これから雨の日が多くなりますが、道端のアジサイの微妙な色を見ながら色々想像すると、憂鬱な気分も少しは晴れるかもしれません。

Japan has entered into rainy season and it might depress our mind however you can change your mind by imaging world under the ground by watching colors of hydrangeas

こちらは若い花、まだ白っぽいです/ Young bud of flower, it is still whitish.

花が開くに従い色が濃くなります。/ Color becomes deeper after flower blooming.

オクトーバーフェストin 駒沢/ Oktoberfest 2015 in Komazawa

本場ミュンヘンのビール祭りを日本各地で開催しているオクトーバーフェスト2015。今は駒沢公園で開催されていて、天気の良かった５月３０日(土曜日）の午後に行ってきました。

A Oktoberfest, very popular beer festival in the world, now is also now opened in Japan, and I went to a Oktoberfest 2015 in Komazawa last Saturday, May 30, since it was very nice weather for beer drinking.

ドイツからやって来た醸造所や日本の地ビール醸造所の色んな生ビールをソーセージやムール貝、ポテトフライなどといただきました。

We can enjoy many kind of beers brewed by Bavarian brewers as well as Japanese with typical German dishes, such as sausage, fried potato or steamed mussel.

ステージで開催されるライブバンドの掛け声で乾杯を重ね、清々しい五月の風に吹かれて、ビールも進み、夕暮れ時に家路につきましたが、会場では夜遅くまで歓声が続いているようでした。

Also we can enjoy Germany live music played by German band, particularly a famous song for cheers! I really enjoyed many jogs of beers under fine weather. Although I went back to my house in evening time, the fest could be continued until 10 pm.
