スイカズラ/ Japanese honeysuckle

吸い葛は、古くは花を口にくわえて甘い蜜を吸ったところから付けられた名前で、砂糖の無い頃の日本では、砂糖の代わりとして用いられていたとか。英語ではJapanese honeysuckle　と呼ばれているる。スイカズラ属(honeysuckle)は約１８０種あり北半球に広く生息しており、その蜜の甘さからHoneysuckleと呼ばれています。

“Suikazura” in Japanese means honey or nectar suckle vein and actually Japanese people used this plant as sweeten before sugar introduced. Japanese honeysuckle is a one of the species in honeysuckle family which has almost 180 species.

また別名のニンドウ（忍冬）は常緑で冬でも葉を落とさないことから付けられたとか。また蕾が黄色(金色）、花が白色（銀色）からキンギンカ（金銀花）とも呼ばれている。

Another Japanese name of the plant “Nindou” means endure in winter since it has ever green leaf during winter. Also anther name “Kinginka” means gold and silver flower from color of bud and flower.

街路樹の垣根としても使われますが、建物に沿って這い上がると見事なアーチにもなります。

It is used as hedge along the road and become arch when it creeping up to a building.

タイにも近い種類のタイ語でLeb mue nang英語ではRangoon creeperとかChinese honeysuckleと呼ばれるピンクの可憐な花を咲かせよい香りのする、つる性の植物がありました。ちなみにLeb mue nangは婦人の指の爪という意味だそうです。

In Thailand, there is a similar plant with pretty pink flower and fragrance named “Leb mue nang” and called Rangoon creeper or Chinese honeysuckle. Thai word “Leb mue nang” means “Fingernails of a lady”.
