沈丁花の香り/ Aroma of Winter Daphne

早咲きの桜や花桃などが咲いてきて街が華やかになってきましたが、強い香りで春を告げてくれるのがこの沈丁花。木も小さく花の姿は控えめだが、どの花にも負けない強い香りで、街を歩いていても咲いているのが直ぐにわかる。

We can now enjoy many brilliant and pretty flowers such as a Cherry blossom and a Peach flower in a town but also we can enjoy aroma of a Winter Daphne now. The shape of flower of Winter Daphne on shrub looks not so flamboyant but the fragrant can be most attractive. So we can easily
find this flower during walking in a town.

「Daphne odora」という学名は、アポロンから求愛されながらもそれを拒み月桂樹に身を変える美しい女神Daphneと、芳しい香りを意味するodoraから成り立っています。

A scientific name “Daphne odora” consists from name of beautiful lady who changed her body to a laurel tree for escaping from courtship by Apollo and odora means fragrant in Latin world.

フネが身を変えたという月桂樹はその芳香から香辛料として広く使われますが、沈丁花は月桂樹と違って有毒で、樹液にかぶれることもあるようなので、香りを楽しむだけのほうが良いようです。

Laurel (laurier or bay leaf) is commonly used in cooking as a spice with its good smell, however winter Daphne is poisonous and some people can be dermatitis from contact with the sap. So it is better to enjoy only aroma of this plant.

前に住んでいたバンコクにはやはり香りの良いジャスミンが時々咲いていました。花に顔を近づけるとほのかな香りを楽しむことはできましたが、街を歩いていてジャスミンの香りに気がつくようなことはありませんでした。バンコクの街は、ある意味、色んな臭いが漂っていたので、花の匂いが楽しめなかったのかもしれませんね。

I was able to find flowers of Jasmine blooming on the road side of Bangkok when I was in Bangkok. And I could enjoy good smell of Jasmine by approaching my face to the flowers, but I could scarcely to notice these flowers by their fragrant during my walking on the road.
I wonder there were many kind of strong smell on the road of Bangkok, so it was hard to distinguish smell of flowers among them.
