河津桜/ Cherry blossom; variety “Kawadu”

通勤途中の桜が一本だけ咲きだしたのに気がつきました。ここ何日か暖かい日が続いたので急に咲いたようです。

I found cherry blossoms start blooming on only one tree on my way to my office. It must be accelerated by unexpected recent couple of warm days.

聞くと河津桜だそうです。河津桜はその名の通り、伊豆の河津町だけのものかと思っていましたが、東京にもところどころにあるそうです。

I was told this cherry is called variety of “Kawadu” which was named from Kawadu town in Izu peninsula. I was Kawazu sakura could be seen in only in Kawadu town but it can be found in Tokyo but not so much.

寒風の中に咲く紅梅や白梅もいいなあと思っていましたが、このピンクの花を見ると、やはり桜は華やかさが違うなあと思いました。一気に春が近づいた気がします。

I was thinking scene of pretty red and white Japanese apricot flowers blooming in cold wind in early spring could be very lovely, but I was impressed by brightness of cherry blossoms which is much brilliant and cheerful. I can feel spring is coming just next to us.

霞ヶ関で鯨料理 How about enjoying wheal dish in Kasumigaseki; Central governmental HQ area

鯨の食文化を残そうと農林水産省の食堂では鯨料理を提供しています。

You can taste wheal dish in a restaurant located in Headquarters of Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, MAFF, since MAFF is trying to preserve traditional wheal meal in Japan.

官庁の建物に入るには手続きをして入館証が必要な所が多いのですが、ここの食堂は、チェックゲートの外側にあって、入館証の無い一般の人でも利用出来るようになっています。農林水産省の公式ホームページはこちらです。

It is common that person who enter to a official building of central government needs to be issued an official pass by registering himself in advance. However, as the restaurant is located outside of check-gate, a guest who has no pass can also this facility. Please find official explanation of MAFF, here (but only Japanese).

今や高級料理の感のある鯨料理ですが、ここでは竜田揚げなどが気軽な値段で味わえます。

Now a days, wheal cuisine may be considered expensive and exclusive, but it can be enjoyed much casual and used-be popular dish such as Tatsuta-Age; soy sauce and ginger flavored deep fried wheal meat with casual prices in there.

外務省の食堂でも、鯨の大和煮を炊き込んだ鯨飯などが食べられ、食堂からの眺めも良いのですが、こちらは入館証が必要なので、公的な用事がないと、なかなか難しいかもしれません。

You can also enjoy wheal meal in a restaurant in Ministry of Foreign Affairs, MOFA, too. In there, you can select a "Kuzira Meshi", boiled rice with flavored wheal meat by soy sauce and sugar. The restaurant is located on 8th floor with good view, but you need a official pass to enter the building.

春霞？/ Misty spring morning

今日の東京は昨晩からの雨も上がり、暖かく感じる朝。朝の霧（きり）は春の霞（かすみ）のよう。今日は春を感じられる日になりそうです。

Today, rain from last night ends and fog over Tokyo this morning. I am not sure this is a fog or mist, but I hope I can feel early spring warm today.

カー・シェアリング/ Car sharing

今、我が家には自家用車がないので、レンタカーを愛用しています。スキーに行くときには、オプションでスタッドレスを付けたミニバンとか、少し大きな買い物の時はバンを借りたり、ちょっとした買い物はエコカーで経済的になどと、用途に応じて車種も変えて利用しています。

Since I don't have my own car now, I rent a car when I need. I can choose suitable type of car such as a mini-ban with studless winter tire when I go to skiing, and I select a van when I go shopping for large items and then I use a eco-car for small shopping near my house.

今回は、以前から少し気になっていたカー・シェアリングを使ってみました。PCや携帯を使ってインターネット経由で、空いていれば１５分単位で予約できるという手軽さを試してみました。

However, I try to use a car sharing this time for which I have been attracted recently. This system can offer customers to use a car every 15 minutes booked through internet by PC or mobile.

会員になった時に、係りの人から、利用時間を途中で延長しようとしても次の人が予約を入れていると手続きが面倒になるので、使う予定時間より少し長めに予約したほうが良いですよとのアドバイスもあり、今回は４時間の予約で試してみました。

I was recommended to book a little bit longer period than expected time since a procedure for prolonging reserved time during actual using time would be completed particularly when other customer has already booked next to booked time, so I booked four hours in advance.

ネットで調べてみると、いくつかの車種が利用可能だったので、今まで乗ったことのなかったスズキのソリオで試して見ました。家族３人でホームセンターやスーパーマーケット等で買い物をして、３時間半で返却。予約は４時間でも、利用料は実際使った３時間半で計算され給油も必要もなく、約２，８００円。短時間の利用だとレンタカーより結構割安になるようです。

I found some different type of cars were available when I checked from my PC, I booked a “Sorio” of Suzuki that I have never driven this brand before. I went to a home improvement store and a supermarket for weekend shopping and I returned the car in three hours and half. Although I booked four hours I only need to pay for three hour and half and need not to refuel, and I paid about JPY 2,800. I understand cost for car sharing in short time such as 2-3 hours could be quite cheaper than rent-a-car.

予約時間になって、自分のカードをここにかざすとキーが開きます/ Doors of the car will be unlocked when you put on member card on time.

このカーシェアリング、まだ車種や利用できる場所も限られているようですが、短期間の利用だったらまた使ってみたいと思いました。車内を汚さず、時間を守るといった利用者のマナーが普及のキーのように思いますが、もう少し広まれば、車種のバラエティも増えてもっと使いやすくなる気がします。

It is still limited car type and car stations; car park for a car sharing are not so much, but I would use again in case of short time use. I think popularity of this system depends on manner of users such as keeping car clean or punctual use but if it becomes more popular it shoud be more convenient with wide variety of car type.

フラワーバレンタイン/ Flower Valentine’s day

昨年はタイのバレンタインディの過ごし方を記事にして、タイでは（というか世界的には）バラなどの花を男性から女性に送るのが一般的だと紹介しました。

I wrote an article on Valentine's day in Bangkok introducing Thai style as male present a bouquet of rose or other beautiful flower to female, as I understand it could be popular style internationally.

日本では、まだ女性がチョコを男性に送るのがポピュラーですが、日本でも男性あるいは女性から花を贈りましょうというフラワーバレンタインの取り組みが少しずつ定着しつつあるようです。

In Japan, it still much much popular a lady present chocolate or sweets to her beloved one or close friends. However, it becomes a little bit popular male or female give flowers by a campaign called “Flower Valentine's day” .

デパートのディスプレイや花屋さんでも、フラワーバレンタインの文字が見られるようになってきました。

I can see a word of “Flower Valentine's day” on display at a department store or at a flower shop.

この取り組み、普段は花屋さんの敷居が高い中年男性が花屋さんに行くきっかけとしても良いかもしれません。我が家にも春の香りが少し漂いました。

This campaign could give a good opportunity to come to flower shops for middle age males who have little chance to visit flower shop usually. A flower bouquet brought smell of spring to my house.

湯沢に日帰りスキー/ One day trip to Yuzawa spa for skiing and more

２月１１日の建国記念の日を利用して、東京都内か日帰りスキーに行ってきました。１月にバンコクから帰国して、体も少し寒さに慣れたので今シーズンの初滑りを楽しんできました。

I have enjoyed one-day skiing trip to Yuzawa spa area on 11 February 2015; National Foundation Day with my family. This is my first skiing in this winter after I returned to Japan from Bangkok on January.

東京から車で日帰で行けて、高速道路から近くて、息子と私はスキーを、家内はスキー場内の温泉でゆっくりできるところということで、湯沢パークスキー場を選びました。
谷川連峰も綺麗に見え雪質もよく最高のコンディションですべることが出来ました。５５歳以上のシニア料金と中学生料金の割引クーポンもあって我が家の家族構成にもぴったりでした。

I chosen a ski resort named “Yuzawa park ski repsort” where my son and I were able to enjoy skiing during my wife relaxing in spa. The resort is easy to access from Tokyo after using the tool way. Special discount ticket for elderly person (over 55 years old) and junior high student is attractive for my family members.

夕方まで目一杯、楽しんでから温泉に行ったので、浴場が結構混んでいて、のんびりと温泉という訳には行かなかったですが、体をほぐすのには十分でした。湯上りの汗がなかなか引かなかったのと、湯上りのビールの誘惑に打ち勝つのに苦労しましたが、なんとか筋肉痛にならなかったのは温泉のお陰のようです。

As we enjoyed skiing until evening, hot spa was a little bit crowded and not so suited for relaxing but enough for loosening muscle. After sweating a lot by natural hot spa, it was hard to give up to drink a grass of cold beer!

春を待つ花 梅と水仙/ Flowers waiting spring, Japanese apricot; Mume and narcissus

前の記事で、冬の風物詩、霜柱のことを書いたらちょっと寒々としたものになってしまいました。そこで、今回は少し春らしい写真に。

In the last article, I wrote on frost column which is typical winter scene in Tokyo but it looked very chilly. Therefore I changed topic to Spring oriented pictures this time.

通勤路を少し変えたら、紅梅や足元にはひっそりと咲く水仙が。

I found red Japanese apricot blossoms with blue sky and narcissus on the ground, as I detoured a little bit from usual way to my office.

朝の空気は冷たいけれど、青空に映える赤い花を見ていると、少し華やかな気分になれました。たまには通勤路を少し変えて遠回りもよいものでした。

Although morning air was still very chilly but I was a little bit excited to see small red flowers with blue sky backdrop and feel spring atmosphere. I realized it would be good for changing my route sometimes.

梅の英名はJapanese plumだと思っていたのですが、Japanese apricot 又はChinese plumと呼ぶのだそうです。ちょっとややこしいですね。

I was thinking English name of Japanese Mume, or Ume could be Japanese plum but I found it is called Japanese apricot or Chinese plum, so it could be confusing.

霜柱/ frost column, needle ice

東京地方はこのところ寒い日が続いていて、今朝も立派な霜柱が出来ていました。
霜が空中の水分が凍るのに対し、この霜柱は土中の水分が凍ってできるので、字は似ていても全く別物のようです。

I found needle ice or frost column on the ground in this morning since we have cold days in these days in Tokyo area.
Frost is made from water in air but frost column or needle ice is made from water in soil during winter cold day, so it is different phenomenon although Japanese name seems simile.

土の表面が氷点下でも土の中がまだ凍っていない時に、火山性の柔かい土壌で出来やすいので、雪が少なく関東ローム層で覆われている関東平野は、世界的にも霜柱の出来やすい地域なのだそうです。

It is created when inside soil is above 0 degree Celsius but temperature of surface air is below O degree and often found in soft and fine soils including volcanic acid, so Kanto plain surrounding Tokyo covered by Kanto loamy layer with few snow is one of the best area for forming frost column or needle ice.

しばらく寒さが続きそうなので、朝のはかない氷の造形を楽しむことができそうです。
I can enjoy to watch this icy object for a while but very short time in early morning.

英語圏の人は、やはり「人」が重要なのでしょうか/Persons should be much more important for native English people than Japanese?

東京メトロの車内のドアの左右に貼られている注意書き、よく見てみると日本語と英語では一つだけ大きく違っているところが。

I found critical difference in their meaning between Japanese notice and English one in a subway train (Tokyo Metro).

この二つの文、想像するに、原文は日本語で、それを英語に訳したのではないかと思います。日本語の意味を直訳すれば、 or (suspicious) personsはいらないような気もするのですが、このor persons　がなければ、英語圏の人にとっては、何となく落ち着かない感じになってしまうのでしょうか。

I can imagine Japanese notice could be an original sentence and translated into English one later. And English version could not be included words of “or persons” if it had been translated in word by word directly. However it might be odd for native English speaker, particularly for Western people, if it has not included words of “or persons” in the sentences, I wonder.

こういったところに、「人」に対する考え方の違いが出てくるのかなあとふと感じてしまいました。

So I could understand it might be from basic difference view to human being between Western people and Japanese.

窓側の席/ A seat at window side

若い頃は、新幹線や列車の席は必ず窓側を予約していたのですが、いつの頃からか、通路側を選ぶようになっていました。
特に一人旅では、通路への出入りや車内販売のことを考えると、つい景色よりも便利さを優先するようになっていました。

ただ最近の新幹線では、電源コンセントがある窓側を選ぶようになりました。

I used to reserve a seat at window side whenever I booked in a local express train or Supper express train; Shinkanshen when I was young, but I selected aisle side recently although I don't remember since when I changed.
Particularly, during my lonely journey, I prefer to be aisle side considering easy to move or shopping with an attendant although it would not be good view.

But in these days, I return to seat on window side in a super express train since electrical outlet is available on the wall under window. .

折角の窓側なので、時々は外に目を向け景色を楽しむようにしています。

And I try to enjoy scene from the windows sometimes during traveling

飛行機の一人旅の場合は、昼間の２、３時間の短いフライトなら窓際がいいのですが、それを超える時間だと、どうしても通路側を選んでしまいます。ビジネスクラスだと窓際でゆっくりできるのでしょうが・・・

In a plane, I still prefer aisle side except day flight less than 2-3 hours as I don't want to bother people next me in tiny economy class seat.
