カノム・カイ タイ風ソフトケーキ（その２）/ Kanom Kai – soft cake in Thai style part2

一つ前の記事でカノムカイのマドレーヌ風のものを書いたが、今回はカップケーキ風のカノムカイ。
バンコクの高級生鮮品市場のサムヤン市場（ファランポーン駅から徒歩15分くらい）の一角にある小さなお店で買える。
I wrote about a kind of Kanom Kai looks like a “Madeleine” in a last article. but in this article I will show another type of kanom kai looks like cup-cake. This small shop is located in a Sam Yane market which is famous of high-quality fresh market near Hualamphong Station (15minutes walk).

見た目はカップケーキのようだが、シフォンケーキのようにふわふわで、バニラ、コーヒー、オレンジ、パンダンリーフの味がある。1個10バーツ。ふあふあなので２、３つはペロッと食べられる。

It looks like cup-cake but it is much softer and puffy like “Chiffon cake”. You can enjoy four kind of tastes, vanilla, coffee, orange and pandan leaf for each only THB10. It is very soft and light, so it is very easy to eat 2,3 pieces in one time.

カノム・カイ タイ風ソフトケーキ その１/ Kanom Kai – soft cake in Thai style

カノムがお菓子でカイが卵なので、直訳すると卵菓子ということになるが、小麦粉（あるいは米粉）に卵や砂糖を入れて焼いたお菓子を一般的にカノムカイと呼び、店によって色々なバリエーションがあるようだ。

Kanom means cake or sweet in Thai and Kai means egg, therefore Kanom Kai means egg cake in direct meaning. The cakes made by wheat (or rice) flour with egg and sugar are called Kanom kai but many kind and shape of kanom kai depend on shops.

インド人街パフラット近くのオールドサイアムプラザの前のブラファ通りの、母娘2人でやっている小さな屋台のカノムカイが美味しく評判と教えてもらい行ってみた。このカノムカイは、マドレーヌのような形をしていてレーズンが乗った柔かいカステラのような味。6個入り30バーツか11個入り50バーツで、その日はあまり混んでいなかったが、それでも注文したら３０分して取りに来てと言われ、オールドサイアムプラザで買い物をして時間をつぶしてから取りにいった。ふあふあでほんのり甘くなく、ちょっとしたおやつに丁度よい美味しさ。

A street cake shop owned by a mother and daughter on Burapha street pahurat in front of a old siam plaza near pahrat, little India in Bangkok. I was informed that a kanom kai of this shop is very nice. A shape of kanom kai of the shop looks like “Madeleine” and tastes soft cake. Price is THB 30 for six pieces or THB 30 for eleven pieces. I visited this shop just before noon in Sunday, and not so many customers but I was told to pick up 30 minutes late after my orders, and I need to spent a time in old siam plaza. The cake is very soft and slightly sweet and good for casual sweets.

パガンの町並み ミャンマー旅行記８/ Landscape of Bagan

パガンはパゴダが大小あわせ３０００以上も存在すると言われており、まさしくパゴダ
と寺院の町である。現在オールドパガンと言われる城壁に囲まれた地域は、パゴダ等の
宗教施設、博物館やホテル等の観光施設しかなくて、一般住民はニューパガンに移住さ
せられたという。
ただ城壁の外では、パゴダの周りの土地を農民達は牛で耕し落花生やゴマを栽培し、竹
やシュロで作った家の集落で静かな暮らしをしている。

It is said more than three thousand pagoda are still remaining in Bagan, so Bagan is a town of pagodas and temples. The center city of Bagan surrounded by a wall called old Bagan is now a place only for pagodas and temples as well as facilities only for tourism such as museums or hotels and people were forced to move to new Bagan. But outside the wall of Old Bagan city, field around pagodas are cultivated for peanuts or sesame by farmers and people are living in hose made by bamboo and hemp palm in a small village.

観光客向けの馬車に乗って、農地の中の点在するパゴダを見たり竹の村といわれる静か
な集落を回ることができる。I was able to ride on a carriage for watching pagodas and through a small village called bamboo vileage.

それぞれのパゴダにお祭りの日があるようで、近くの集落の人たちが集まっていた。（ガイドさんによるとパゴダが一杯あるので、パガンでは１年中どこかのパゴダでお祭りがあるようだ）
I passed by a pagoda with a festival and many people from surrounding villages had been gathering. According to a tour guide, there are almost everyday festivals since there are many many pagodas in Bagan.

まず女性たちは、年齢順に賽銭を持ち列を作ってパゴダに近づいていく。Firstly ladies are approaching to the pagodas with donations.

その後、男性たちが鳴り物入りで賑やかに登場/ And then men are coming with loud souncd

パゴダの周りには市が立って、手動の回転遊具や露天商店が並んでいる/ Festival around pagoda attraction and venders.

ミャンマーの風景 寺院・パゴダ編（ミャンマー旅行記７）/ Scene in Myanmar in temples/pagodas

ミャンマーは寺院とパゴダの国です、その風景は同じ東南アジアでもタイとも少し違っていて興味深い景色も沢山。そういう寺院やパゴダの景色から。

Scenery in Myanmar looks a little bit different from Thailand although both belonged to South-East Asia and Buddhist country. Myanmar is a country famous of many temples and pagodas, so I selected some pictures that I was interested in.

寺院もパゴダも色々な形があるが、建物の中に入れるのが寺院、登ったりは出来ても中に入れないのがパゴダのようです。

There are many shapes of temples and pagodas. Temple is a building people can enter in and pagoda that people cannot enter although to some pagoda we can climb up.

寺院の境内では、多くの僧侶や尼僧に出会うが、僧侶の袈裟はタイの僧侶に比べやや濃い茶色で、また幼い見習僧も多いようだ。タイではほとんど目立たない尼僧もミャンマーでは綺麗なピンクの袈裟を着た尼僧を多く見かけた（タイの尼僧は白色の袈裟）。

In the precincts, we can see many monks and nuns. Surplice of monk in Myanmar is much darker color than same of in Thailand and I saw many very young novice maybe around 10 years old. I also found many nuns wearing pink surplices although nuns are seldom seen in Thailand, and surplice of nun in Thailand is white.

In Myanmar, there are many kind of Buddhist statues as well as Thiland.

この立像は、離れて見ると微笑んでいるように見えるが、近づくと少し厳しい顔に
The face of the standing statue looks smiling from long distance but more severe face by looking under near distance.

信者が金箔を張り付ける仏像も多い。中にはもう仏像の形が分からなくなったものも。
Some statues are covered by gold foil by believers and ultimate figures by gold sheets cannot been seen as Buddhist figures.

残虐な王により建てられたというダーマヤンジ寺院は、地元の人から幽霊が出ると恐れられている。白いドレスを着て髪の長い幽霊で決して顔を見せず、忽然と姿を消すという。なんか日本の幽霊にも似ているような・・

Dhammayanghi temple which is said build by cruel king and is afraid by local people by a rumor a ghost would appear in night. The ghost wearing white dress with long hear never show her face and might disappear instantly, I am interest in such story since many points are very similar to ghost story in Japan.

パゴダや寺院の周りにも色々な物が配置されている。
ミャンマーでは誕生日の曜日毎にシンボルの動物と方角、例えば月曜日はトラで東、木曜日はネズミで西というように決まっていて、水曜日だけは午前は牙のある象で南、午後は牙のない象で北西いうように分かれ、これで八曜日と八方角が決まっている。それぞれの方角には、そのシンボルの象が仏像に守られるように配置され、人々は自分のシンボルの動物の所に花を捧げ水をかけてお祈りをするようだ。ちなみ、私は金曜日でモルモットで北の方角らしい。まあ可愛らしくて良いか？

There are many buildings or facilities surround temple or pagodas.
In Myanmar, 7 days of week, actually 8days, since Wednesday is divided into two days, as morning and afternoon, is attributed symbol animal and direction, such as symbol of Monday is tiger and east, Thursday as mouse and west. And symbol of Wednesday morning is elephant with tusk and south and afternoon is elephant without tusks and north-west. Then 8days has 8 symbol animals and directions. And each symbol animals are located with Buddhist statues in allocated directions, people come to their birthday symbol animal play their expectations by donating flowers and pouring water to them. Bu the way, my birthday was Friday and symbol is guinea pig and north direction, I need to love a guinea pig from now on.

ミャンマーの風景 街角編（ミャンマー旅行記６）/ Scene in Myanmar on the street

ミャンマーを訪れて、見かけた風景で面白いなあと感じた写真を並べてみました。同じ東南アジアでもタイとも少し違っていて興味を引いた景色です、まずはヤンゴンとパゴーの街角の景色から。

I selected some pictures I feel to be interested in from I took during my journey to Myanmar. The scene in Myanmar looks a little bit different from Thailand where I live in. These pictures are on the street in Yangon and old town Bago.

店の前や街角に亀が置いてあって誰でも飲めるようになっている。私は飲まなかったけど / From water pots in front of store or on the road side anyone can drink water freely.

地方に行くと移動手段の中心は自転車 / Bicycles are main transportation way particularly in country area.

三輪タクシー（タイではトゥクトゥク）も結構見かける。タイのトゥクトゥクとは少し形が違うけど/ tricycle motor taxi; similar one called “Tukutuk” in Thailand .

一度だけ見た列車（結構長い）, Along train at railroad crossing, only one train I saw in Myanmar.

路線バスはまだ冷房車はないとか（日本の中古バスが活躍） / All public bus is without air-condition, I saw many used buses from Japan.

バス待ちの人と待ち行く人々（ロンジン；巻きスカートの人も多い、女子学生の制服も）
People on the street waiting for bus or walking. Many people wearing “longyi” wrap-around skirt in Myanmar, and school uniform is also longyi.

ちなみに空港内のバスも日本の路線バスの中古バスでした。”次止まります”のボタンは健在でした。 Transportation bus from terminal building to plane was also second hand bus used in public bus in Japan.

パゴーの町では、兵隊さんを多く見かけました。多分洪水救援のために派遣されて来ているのでしょう。威圧的な感じはしませんでした。/ I saw many soldiers in Bago, they may be dispatched for relieving victims of flooding, so they doesn't seem overbearing but friendly to civilians.

次は寺院・パゴダ編の予定です。

沙羅双樹の花in アナンダ寺院（ミャンマー旅行記５）/ Sal tree in Ananda Temple in Bagan, Myanmar

お釈迦様の入滅の際に2本の沙羅の樹の間に横たわり入滅されたといわれ、そのため沙羅双樹と呼ばれる沙羅の樹。このため悟りを開いた時の菩提樹、誕生した際の無憂樹とあわせて、仏教三聖樹と呼ばれる。菩提樹はバンコクでも至る所で見ることが出来るし、無憂樹も公園などで時々見ることができたが、この沙羅の木は、バンコクにあると聞いていたので、探していたのだが、なかなか花を見ることが出来ずにいた。

It is said at the last day of Gautama Buddha, completed nirvana, he told Ananda to prepare a bed for him with its head turned towards the north between two Sal trees. Therefore Sal tree is called one of the three sacred trees in Buddhism along with the Bodhi tree and the Ashoka tree. I can find Bodhi tree in Bangkok in everywhere and Ashoka tree can be found in some places in Bangkok such as in parks. It was said Sal tree also can be seen in Bangkok, but I was not able to find it in Bangkok.

今回、ミャンマー、パガンのアーナンダ寺院を訪ねた時にその境内に咲いているのを見ることができた。アーナンダは仏陀が入滅した時に同行していた弟子の名前で、その由縁もあって境内に植えられいたのだろう。だが、そういった予備知識もなかったので、ガイドさんから沙羅の花が咲いていると教えられた時には、ちょっとびっくりして、慌ててシャッターを押したので、少々ピントがあっていないのが残念。でも念願の沙羅の樹を見ることができて、今回のミャンマー旅行が一段と楽しいものになった。

When I visited Ananda temple, a tourist guide told me a Sal tree was blooming. Ananda is a name of disciple who was accompanied with Gautama Buddha when he was passing away, so the sal tree was planed in the temple. Since I had no knowledge on this episode, I was surprised to find it, so some pictures were no well focused. I was satisfied with seeing the sal tree during this journey if Myanmar.

ただ、この沙羅の樹、タイやミャンマーではこの木（Couroupita guianensis）がサラの木と呼ばれているが、お釈迦様の入滅の地インド・クシナガラでは小さな白い花をつける別の木(Shorea robusta)がサラの木と呼ばれていて、どうやら本家の沙羅の樹はそちららしい。ちなみにこのアーナンダ寺院での名前札には Shorea robustaと書かれているが、どうもこれは間違いのよう。

By the way, this tree （Couroupita guianensis） is called sal tree in Myanmar or Thailand, but another tree (Shorea robusta) is called called as sal tree in Kusinara region in India. And original sal tree seems Shorea robusta. I found name plate hanged on the tree showing Shorea robusta instead of Couroupita guianensis, but it could be mistake by the temple.

一瞬の彩雲、バンコクの夕空/ Over Bangkok sky, iridescent cloud in a twinkling

夕方激しいスコールの後、晴れてきたので、綺麗な夕焼けが見られるかと西の空を見てみると、雲の端が少し青みががっている。少し見ていると、青に加えて、赤やオレンジ色も混じってきて、ほんの1分か2分の僅かな間だけど彩雲を見ることができた。

I just watched at west sky in the evening, since I was expecting beautiful sunset sky after relatively heavy shower. I found edge of a cloud seemed a little bit blueish, and then color was changed by combining red and orange on the cloud and it became iridescent cloud just one or two minutes.

約2年前にバンコクで初めて彩雲を見たのが、このブログを始めるきっかけだったが、その後時々空を見上げても、なかなか見られなかった彩雲。今日何気なく見た夕日の空に現れたこの美しい輝き、ほんの僅かの時間だったが何か良いことあるかなあ。

When I saw an iridescent cloud more than two years ago, it was a trigger to start this blog. But since then I was not able to find it again until today. I was very lucky I saw west sky by chance and I was able to see the iridescent cloud even in very short time. I hope I can have a little bit luck fortune?

もう少し見ていたかったけれど、僅か1－2分で、はかなく消えてしまいました。
just after 1-2 mintutes apperance, it has gone.

今日も最後まで読んでいただき有難うございました。ミャンマー旅行記の途中でしたが、思いがけなく彩雲を見られたので、今日はミャンマー旅行記を中断して彩雲の記事になりました。次回からまたミャンマーの記事を再開します。

雨季のミャンマー、冠水と乾燥 （ミャンマー旅行記４）/ Flooding and drought in rainy season in Myanmar

今回、ミャンマーを訪ねたのは雨季の真っ最中だったので、ある程度の雨は覚悟して行った。
ヤンゴンの空港に着いたら雨模様で、ガイドさんの話でも、連日雨とのこと。空港から直ぐにパゴーの街に向かったが、幹線道路でも道路脇が冠水していたり、民家も水につかっているところも。午前中は予定通り観光し、昼食後、次の目的地に向かおうとしたら、物凄いスコールで道路か川か判らないような状況に。ガイドさんも運転手さんも慣れたもので、他に見るところは沢山あるので、行き先を変更するからと我々はUターン。だけど他の車やバイクは水につかりながらも突っ切っていく、これくらいの冠水はいつものことなのだろう。

Since this journey to Myanmar is during rainy season, I had some preparedness for raining. When I arrived at airport of Yangon, it was raining and tourist guide told us it was raining every day. We went to Bago city directly from airport and I found some road-sides of main road was flooded and some houses also in the water. I visited tourist spots as planed in the morning and took a lunch, but I found a road to next destination was completed flooded like a liver after short time tropical shower. Our guide and driver looked not so upset and told us we had to change destination since there were many tourist spots. And I saw many other people drove into flooded road without hesitation like as usual.

次の日は、ヤンゴンから約７００ｋｍ北の内陸の仏教遺跡の街パガンに。ヤンゴンとは一転して雨季なのに随分と乾燥している。畑では落花生やゴマが植えられているそうだが、しばらく雨が降っていないとかで、芽が出るのも雨頼りだとか。パガンの横には大河エーヤワディー川（イラワジ川）が滔々と流れており、その対照的な姿を見ると複雑な気持ちになる。

Next day I fried to Bagan, about 700km north from Yangon. Bagan is famous as Buddhist ruins and located in dry inland. So I found the land in there was relatively dry even in middle of rainy season. I heard peanut, sesame and corn were planed but waiting rain for sprouting since no rain recently. Bagan is facing great Ayeyarwady liver with amount of water flow. I had complicated feeling to watch such contracting figures.

飛行機の窓から見ても、大河の横に広がる乾燥した畑が良く判る。飛行機がマンダレーに近づくと、小規模な溜め池の下流には緑の畑も広がっているので、灌漑開発も少しは行われているのかもしれない。さらに飛行機がヤンゴンに近づくと、雨雲の下、あちこちで冠水している農地が見られる。

From plane, I could see dry Bagan dry filed next to great Ayeyarwady liver. When the plane approached Mandalay, I found some green field under-street from a small dam or reservoir, it could be under small irrigation development. And then I saw many flooded filed under thick cloud whne the plane approached to Yangon.

これまでのミャンマーの政情もあり、エーヤワディー川の大規模な開発はあまり行われてこなかったという。これからはミャンマー国自身の発展と各国の投資も入って、エーヤワディー川をはじめミャンマー国内のインフラストラクチャの整備が急速に進んでいくのだと思うが、環境破壊にならない発展が行われることを願わずにいられない。とても難しいことだと思うが、真面目なミャンマーの人たちを見ていると、本当にそう思う。

I think that large scale development of Ayeyarwady liver has not been well implemented reflecting political situation of Myanmar. However, from now on, many large scale development of infrastructure will be planed and implemented by huge foreign investment as well as domestic development. But I hope such development could be proceeded without crucial environment degradation. I understand this is very tough challenge, but I really hope so since I was able to touch truly honest and sincere character of Myanmar people.

四仏陀のパゴダ（チャイブンパゴダ）（ミャンマー旅行記３）/ Four Seated Buddha, Kyaik Pun Pagoda at Bago in Myanmar

前の記事で、ミャンマーには4人の仏陀、すなわちカクタンダ(Kakuthanda)仏、カッタパ（Kathapa）仏、ゴウナーガマナ（Koṇāgamana）仏にゴーダマ（Gautama Buddha)仏（いわゆるお釈迦様）が崇拝されていると書いた。もう少し調べてみると、この4人の仏陀は、さらに仏教上の過去七仏の後四仏といわれるらしい。以下にwikipediaからの簡単な説明を引用しておきますが、さらにご興味のある方はご自身でお調べください。「仏教では過去未来現在の三世に渡ってそれぞれ千人ずつ仏が出現すると説かれているが、前三仏は過去荘厳劫の千仏のうち最後の三仏、後四仏は現在賢劫の千仏のうち最初の四仏といわれる。」

As I wrote that four Buddha are enshrined in many temple or pagoda in Myanmar in the last article, but I found these four Buddha was called as last four Buddha in the seven Seven Buddhas of the past. And please read brief explanation of “Seven Buddhas of the past” as below; Seven Buddhas of the past, Shakyamuni(Gautama Buddha) and six Buddhas said to have preceded him. The six Buddhas are Vipashyin, Shikhin, Vishvabhū, Kakuthanda, Koṇāgamana, and Kathapa. The first three Buddhas appeared in the past Glorious Kalpa, while the other four Buddhas including Shakyamuni appeared in the present Wise Kalpa.

15世紀に建てられたチャイブンパゴダは古都パゴーの近くにあって、高さ２７ｍの四仏が東西南北を向いて背中合わせに座っていて、その独特の姿はとても印象的。このような建造物もパゴダと呼ぶらしい。残念ながら、どの仏像がどの方角を向いているかが分からなくってしまったが、カクタンダ仏が東、 カッタパ仏が西、 ゴウナーガマナ仏が南、ゴーダマ仏（御釈迦様）が北を向いているとのこと。表情や衣装も少しずつ違っているのですが、すみません、分からなくなってしまいました。

I visited a Kyaik Pun Pagoda, near old city Bago, is was built in 15th century and famous of Four Seated Buddha shrine, a 27 m statue depicting the Buddha seated in four positions, sitting back to back. They face four directions: east, west, south, north, representing four great Buddha: Kakuthanda, Kathapa, Koṇāgamana, and Gautama Buddha respectively.

シュエダゴン・パゴダと様々なパゴダ (ミャンマー） Shwedagon Pagoda and other pagodas in Myanmar

　　　　シュエダゴン・パゴダ(ヤンゴン）/ Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon

ミャンマーには数多くのパゴダがある。その中でも3000を超えるパゴダがあることで有名なパガンの中でもその原型といわれるシュエズィーゴンパゴダ　Shwe zi gone Pagoda、１１４ｍの高さでミャンマー最高の高さを誇るパゴーのシュエモドーパゴダ　Shwemawdaw Pagoda、ヤンゴンの中心地にあるスーレー　パゴダ　Sule Pagodaなど有名なパゴダも数多くあるが、今回はこれらのパゴダを駆け足で回ったあと、最後にヤンゴンを見下ろすSinguttara Hillの上に金色に輝くシュエダゴン・パゴダShwedagon Pagoda を訪ねた。

There are many famous pagodas in Myanmar such as Shwe zi gone Pagoda as a famous of original shape of pagoda in Bagan in where more than three thousand pagoda still standing, Shwemawdaw Pagoda in Bago, the tallest pagoda in Myanmar, or Sule Pagoda located in heart of Yangon. And after I visited these pagodas and then I visited Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon at the final destination of my itinerary. The pagoda is standing on a hill named Singuttara Hill overlooking city of Yangon.

これまで何度かヤンゴンの街を仕事で訪れた時は、このシュエダゴン・パゴダ、いつも市内から見あげるだけだったが、今回初めて境内に入ることができた。外国人は８０００チャット（約8ドル）の入場料を払い、エレベーターで境内に入ることができる（ミャンマー人は下から徒歩で登ると無料らしい）。パゴダの周りは無数の小さなパゴダや仏像を安置した建物に囲まれていて、境内全体が下界とは切り離された一種独特の雰囲気で、まるで桃源郷の中にいるような不思議な感覚にとらわれる。この雰囲気を味わうだけでも、入場料を払う価値は十分にあると思った。

I have visited Yangon several times on my duty, but every time I just saw the Shwedagon Pagoda from city of Yangon and this is the first time to enter the precincts of the Pagoda. Foreigners needs to pay 8,000 Kyats (USD 8) and can enter by a lift to the top of the hill, (Burmese seems to enter without fee by climbing using steps from bottom of the hill. When I stepped in the precincts, area of pagoda surrounded by many small pagodas and buildings with Buddha statutes seems separated unique world like a Shangri-La, so I would recommend to visit and enter inside of the precincts.

パゴダの周りには、お釈迦様を含めこれまで地上に現れた4人の仏陀の像や様々な仏陀の像が安置され、ミャンマーの人たちは、色々な場所で仏像やパゴダに向かってお祈りを捧げている。このパゴダには、約２６００年前にお釈迦様（Gautama Buddha)から直接聖髪を授かった兄弟の商人が当時の王様にその髪を捧げ、既に先の3人の仏陀の聖遺物が奉られていたこの地にパゴダを建てたとのいわれがあり、ミャンマーの仏教の歴史の深さを感じさせられる。日本人は仏陀というと4番目に現れたいわゆるお釈迦様（Gautama Buddha)だけが有名だが、ミャンマーではカクタンダ(Kakuthanda)仏、カッタパ（Kathapa）仏、ゴウナーガマナ（Koṇāgamana）仏もあわせて4人の仏陀がそれぞれ東西南北に安置されており、日本の仏教との違いもあって興味深かった。

Surround of the pagoda, four statutes of Buddha, Kakuthanda, Kathapa, Koṇāgamana and Gautama Buddha were settled on four direction, north, east, south and west and many Burmese are praying from/to many places as they like. According to the original story of the pagoda, almost 2,600 years ago (about 600 BC), two brother merchants who obtained eight hairs from Gautama Buddha offered to the King after they returned to this place. The king decided the place for constructing the pagoda on the Singuttara Hill since in where other secret matters relating other three Buddha had been already settled there. I was very impressed by this story and understood long Buddhist story in Myanmar.

９９ｍのパゴダの先端には７６カラットのダイヤや無数のダイヤやルビー（正確には5,448個のダイヤ と 2,317個 のルビーで多くは個人から寄付されたもの）が散りばめられた飾りが付けられているという。本当にミャンマーの人たちの信心の深さと物だけではない心の豊かさにも驚かされた。

At the apex of the pagoda on 99m heights, a diamond bud is tipped with a 76 carat and diamond and on the diamond bud and a flag-shaped vane, many, many precious stones (actually 5,448 diamonds and 2,317 rubies) are tipped in the same. I think it is reflecting strong religious believe and richness of spirits as well as resources in Myanmar.

どのパゴダでも訪れる時は、その境内は神聖な土地のため入るときに裸足にならなくてはいけない。パガンの焼けた砂岩の境内や雨のシュエダゴン・パゴダの少しひんやりした大理石の境内など、その時、その場所の違いを肌で感じられ面白かった。ただその分、足が疲れるけれど。

I had to take off my shoes when I entered in any precincts of Pagodas and I felt hot sand stones or cool marble stones around pagodas. And I could fell different of field of each pagoda directly from my bottom of feet. It was very interesting but felt a little of tired with bare foot.

パガンの落日/ Sunset in Bagan

ミャンマー中部の仏教遺跡パガン。大小無数の仏塔（パゴダ）の中に沈む夕日。この景色に言葉が見つからない。

Bagan, a Buddhist historic town in middle of Myanmar. Sunset in the field of more than 2,000 pagoda are standing in. I cannot find any words to explain this scene.

自転車に乗って in バンコク/ Riding bicycle in Bangkok

バンコクに来て約２年半、来た当事に比べ自転車に乗っている人が増えたように感じる。しかもお洒落な姿で。
バンコク都知事も、自転車専用レーンのモデル道路やレンタルサイクルブースを作って利用を推進したり、BTS（高架鉄道）との組み合わせの利用も推奨ししているようだ。

Comparing two and half years ago, when I started to live in Bangkok, I suppose cyclists must be clearly increased in here, particularly cyclists with fashionable wears.
Governor of Bangkok is encouraging to use bicycle by establishing a model road with bicycle lane or rental-cycle booths network in the city, also encouraging cyclists to bring their bicycle in BTS, sky train.

　　

ベンチャキティ公園の自転車専用コースなどでは結構本格的な格好で楽しんでいる（タイ人は格好から入る人も多いかも？）。私も、ベランダに置き放しにしていたオンボロ自転車を引っ張り出してきて、この公園に行ったり、近所の買い物にと、最近は少しずつ自転車を楽しもうとしてみたが、歩道と車道の段差が大きかったり、道路がデコボコだったり、時にはバイクが逆行してきたりと、まだまだ自転車を楽しむまでには時間がかかりそう。

I found many people enjoying cycling road in a Benchakiti park with colourful costume. I also tried to ride on my old and shabby bicycle which I had left in my balcony without care after I arrived here more than two and half years ago. I visited the park and went shopping by bicycle, but I found many difficulty such as gap between sidewalk and driving lane, bumpy road and sometimes motorbike was running opposite direction, so I was not able to enjoy so much.

一方、タクシーに乗っていると、車の間をすり抜けていく自転車にドキッとさせられることも、くれぐれも事故のないように願うばかり。

On the other hand, when I was in a taxi, I found some cyclists were dodging among narrow space between cars and bicycles and afraid to see collision. I hope no bicycle accident may happen.

タマサート大学の卒業式/ Graduation ceremony of Thammasat University

法学・政治学の名門で、多くの政治家も輩出しているタマサート大学。今日はタープラチャン・キャンパスでの卒業式。昨年も書いたが、キャンパスの周りには、卒業式グッズを売る屋台が祭りの縁日のように立ち並び、１日３回に分けて卒業証書の授与式が行われるそうで、早朝から卒業生や家族で大混雑。

At the day of graduation ceremony at Thammasat University, a most famous university of politics and laws in Thailand and many famous politicians graduated from here. In front of street of Tha Prachan Campus there were many vender stalls selling special celebration goods and it looked like a festival street. I heard ceremony was divided for three groups in a day, and from early morning surrounding roads were very clouded by many graduates and their families and fried.

証書は王族から手渡されるので、独特のマントを羽織い正装した卒業生が、式後に友人や家族なあちこちで記念の写真撮影会。

In the ceremony, graduates were given a certificates by member of Royal family, so they were wearing formal clothes such as mantles. After the ceremony, they were taking pictures with friends and families in every places in the campus.

お祝いグッズの中で、今年は、卒業生のイニシャルのアルファベットを形どった風船を持つのが流行らしくて、銀色の風船がやたらと目立っていた。

I found many silver balloons shaping alphabetic letter, maybe showing initial of graduates, it could be fashionable in this year?

KAMPO胃腸薬？/ Japanese stomach medicine “KAMPO”

市内のどこにでもある薬局の”Boots”で何気なく胃薬の棚を見ていたら”KAMPO”という文字が目に入った。手にとって見ると、あの大○の漢方胃腸薬？どうもタイの会社でライセンス生産されているらしい。

During my shopping in a popular drug store “Boots” in Bangkok, I found a letters “KAMPO” ( It means Chinese traditional drugs in Japanese language) and I took it from a shelf. It was a very popular stomach medicine “ Tai--o Kampo” in japan, but first seen in Thailand for me.
It seems to be produced in Thailand under license contract with Japanese company.

胃腸薬では昔、ちょっと失敗したこともあったので、すかさず購入。１２錠入りで３４バーツ（約１００円）は、この小分けサイズとしては日本の価格に比べても割安だし、飲みきりサイズとして、旅行などの携帯にも便利。これから愛用させてもらおう。

Since I had a bad experience with another stomach drug in Thailand, I bought it without hesitation. The price of THB 34 for 12 pieces seems very reasonable to compare with same in Japan considering this small unit, it very good side for 1day consumption or portable for traveling.

ラオスの松茸/ Matsutake mushroom produced in Laos

バンコク市内のスーパーマーケットで見つけたラオス産の松茸。２０ｃｍ以上もある結構立派な松茸が２本入って、６２０バーツ（２，０００円弱）。バンコクの物価を考えると結構な値段で迷ったが、試しに購入してみた。

In a supermarket in Bangkok, I found Matsutake mushrooms produced in Laos. The price of a pack was THB 620 (about USD 20), in which two good shape of matsutake about 20cm, we hesitated once but decided to buy finally since it was first time to find.

どうして食べようかと期待しながら袋を開くと、マツタケの香りはしないで、少し変な匂いが・・。家内は稲藁を燻したような匂いだと言い、私には牛舎のたい肥のような匂いに感じた。仕方なく少し水で洗って、裂いてオーブントースターで焼いてみた。先ほどの変なにおいは薄れ、焼けたマツタケを口に含むとほのかなマツタケの香りと、確かにマツタケの味が。

When we opened plastic package with big expectation for good smell, but we felt a little bit strange smell. My wife said it seemed like fumigated rice straw and I felt it seemed like manure in cow barn. We washed them reluctantly and grilled in a oven toaster. After we grilled them, strange odour was faded and I could felt smell of matsutake slightly when I put them in my mouth.

もう一度色々と調べてみると、マツタケを入れてあった、稲藁のようなものを編んだ籠から、先ほどの妙な匂いが・・・。どうやらマツタケを収穫してから少し時間が経ち、マツタケの香り薄れた一方、籠の変な匂いがマツタケに移り。折角のマツタケの香りが台無しになったようだった。それでも、醤油とマナオー（タイのライム）をかけて食べたが、期待が高かっただけに、少し残念だった。
折角のマツタケだったが、もう少し流通を改善しないと「香りマツタケ、味シメジ」とはいかないようだ。

I checked again all materials in the package, and I found starange smell was coming from a basket mad of something like rice straw. I understood smell of matsutake mushroom had been faded during relatively long time in transportation and smell of basket became dominant in the package.
Anyway I ate mushroom with soy sauce and Manao (Thai lime), but I could not enjoy not so much since my expectation was so high.
I hope distribution system should be mush improved for enjoying rich aroma matsutake mushroom.

タイ式BBQビュフェ・ムーカタに挑戦 /Thai style BBQ buffet Mookata

ムーカタはタイ語で直訳するとブタ鍋という意味なので、もともとはブタ肉が主体だったのだろうが、今は鶏肉、豚肉、牛肉など色んな肉をジンギスカン鍋のような独特の形の鍋で野菜と一緒に食べるのをムーカタと呼んでいて、BBQ方式の食べ放題の店が多いみたい。また、追加料金を払うとシーフードも食べ放題になる店も多いようで、今回食べに行ったペチャブリー通りに面したSDムーカタは基本の肉類の食べ放題が一人１３９バーツ、シーフードを追加すると一人２３９バーツだった。

"Mookata" literally means "Pork Skillet" in Thai, so I think it could be originally pork was main meat but now we can enjoy chicken, beef as well as pork to be grilled on unique shape of skillet called Mookata skillet with vegetable boiled in it, and it seems majority of Mookata could be “all you can eat” BBQ buffet style. Also it seems many Mookata restaurant offer all you can eat for sea-food service if you can pay additional fares. In case of SD Mookara on Pechabri road that I visited this time offer THB 139 for basic course and THB 239 with sea-food service.

このムーカタ鍋の上の部分に肉類を乗せ、そこから出てくる肉汁とスープで野菜類は周りで煮て食べる。
You can grill meats on top of this Mookata skillet by boiling vegetable surrounding place with soup and meat juices from the top.

シーフードは網焼き。どちらも炭火で火力の調整ができないので、食べるペースを考えながら焼かないと、黒焦げになるので・・・
For the customers who eat sea food, a broil would be offered for grilling. These material are cooked by charcoal, so we need to consider volume of cooked ones otherwise you need to eat food of over heated foods.

今回は、夫婦二入で生ビールのタワー（３ｌ）にも挑戦してみました。お店の人には少し苦笑されたけど、見事完飲。ただ、デザートまで楽しむことが出来ませんでした。次回は・・
When I tried to order to drink a 3l of “Tower of Beer” a waitresses of the restaurant was suspicious to drink whole, but.. Although we drunk all but, we could not to eat desert..
