急病時のディスカウント航空券の変更/ Flight change of discount air ticket in sudden illness

今回、ディスカウント航空券（航空会社発行の正規のもの）で予定していた一時帰国。搭乗当日に家族の急病で２日後の便に変更することにした。航空会社に相談すると、持っていた航空券は変更不可なので、まずこのチケットを払い戻して、新たに２日後の航空券の購入が必要とのこと。またその際、一人２，０００バーツのキャンセル手数料が必要とのこと。
ただ、急病でキャンセルし併せて代わりの新たな航空券を購入する場合、医師の診断書（当初便に搭乗不可能であることと変更後の便に搭乗可能であることの証明）があれば、家族全員のキャンセル料は免除される可能性があるとも教えてもらえた。
早速、病院の医師に相談して診断書を書いてもらいメールで送信したら、ほどなくキャンセル料の免除の知らせが届いた。チケット自体の価格差があったので、少し持ち出しはあったが、ほとんど追加なく、また安心して搭乗できるようになってホッとした。
また、こういった場合に、直ぐに診断書を書いてくれるタイの医師にも助けられた。

I was planning to take home leave as a temporary return to Japan with my family by using using discount air tickets (but officially issued by airliner) from day before yesterday, but I had to change our flights schedule by sudden illness of my family.
I consulted with airline company for changing my itinerary and I was told that I had to refund our previous tickets since our discount tickets can not be changed to other flights and I need to buy new tickets. And Also I need to pay cancellation fee for THB 2,000 for each person.
However, in case of reason of cancellation is sudden illness of family member and buying alternative tickets, cancellation fee could be free with certification of medical doctor and approved by the airline company.
I consulted with medical doctor in the hospital immediately and sent a scanned copy of medical certificate provided by doctor. And soon later I was noticed our certification had been approved.
So I was able to pay a little bit additional difference costs since new ticket prices have been a little bit expensive, but I was able to change flight with minimum expenditure.
And I was saved by a Thai medical doctor who provided a certificate in very timely manner.

BTSスカイトレイングッズ/ Souvenir shop of BTS sky train logo.

バンコクの信頼できる足として人気のあるBTSスカイトレインだが、そのキャラクターグッズは残念ながら、あまり多くない。
キーホルダーやノート、それに腕時計くらい。ちょっと珍しいのが、トレイン型の首枕。鉄道好きの子供の友達（テツの予備軍）へのお土産にと、サイアム駅構内の売店で買っては見たが、喜んでもらえるかな？

　　

I searched a souvenir with BTS sky train logo for friends of my child. The friends who live in Japan and love railway goods, so I tried to find goods relating to BTS since BTS is very popular in Bangkok. I found a shop in Siam station but kind of goods are not so much such as key rings, notes, watch and neck pillow which is a little bit interesting. I hope the fiends of my child could love these souvenir.

カオサンパンツ（象さんパンツ） 購入／ Shopping of Kaosan pants?(Elephant pants?)

カオサン通りやナナの屋台やマーボンクロンセンター(MBKセンター）等バンコクのあちこちで売られている薄手でダブダブの綿のパンツ。正式な名前は知らないが、我が家ではカオサンパンツとか、象さんパンツとか言っている（象柄が多いので）。

Thin, cotton baggy pants, which you can see them sold at here and there in Bangkok, such as at street vender in Kaosan street, Nana or Mahboonkruong Center (MBK Center), I am not sure it has common name but I call it as Kaosan pants or elephant pants since popular printed picture is elephant.

薄くて軽くて柔かく、汗も吸ってくれるので、部屋着として重宝している。またベルトが必要なく、セキュリティチェックが簡単なので飛行機の機内着としても役立つ。ただ、洗濯の時の色落ちへの注意と、縫合がいい加減なので洗濯後の縫合チェックが必要。
１枚２００バーツ（６００円余り）前後と値段も手ごろなので、一時帰国の時の親しい人へのお土産としてカオサンでちょっと多めに買ってきた。
値段交渉も買い物の楽しみの一つ、今回の交渉をダイジェストでご紹介。

店員；　「Ｏｋ、いくらで買いたい？」

１枚平均１３７．５バーツで交渉成立、英語と一部タイ語（数字とかちょっとだけ）、それに店員さんの電卓を使っての交渉。
これまでの経験からすれば、こちらも２－３人の複数で来店し、あくまでも交渉を楽しみながら、「これ男女兼用だよね？」とか「フリーサイズ？」とか、適当に値段以外のことも交えて、ここで買わなくてもいいぐらいの感じで交渉を進めたほうが結果は良いように思う。

It is thin, light and soft, and it absorbs sweats well, so I wear it in my home for relaxing. We can wear it without belt so it is easy to go through security check at airport and useful for using in an airplane.
However you need to separate it from whites for washing and check seam frays after washing.
Since price of them, around THB200, are not so expensive and suitable for gift for my close friends in Japan, I went to Kaosan street for shopping them. Negotiation is also a part of enjoy of shopping, so it is summary of my negotiation.
Khaaw; How much of it?
Shop; THB 200 for each.
Khaaw; Can you discount in case I will buy 10 peaces.
Shop; sure, how much do you want to pay?
Khaaw; THB 1,000 for 10 peaces.
Shop; 1800 for ten.
Khaaw; 1,500
Shop; 1,600
Khaaw; OK, I will pay 1,600 but give me 12 peaces.

So I could buy them THB 137.5 for each, and I negotiated her with English, Thai (very limited words) and her calculator. I think result of negotiation could be better when I visited with 1or 2 friends accompanied with and enjoyed negotiation with talking other topics such as “ is it for men and women, is it free size and so on”.

非常事態宣言は解除されたけど/ Although state of emergency has been lifted,

１月２２日に出された非常事態宣言が、今日３月１９日、約２ヶ月ぶりに解除された。今月始めにデモ隊によるバンコク主要交差点の占拠も縮小され、そもそも有名無実化していた非常事態宣言、今さら解除されてもという感じも。

State of emergency on Bangkok city has been listed on 19th March, today, after almost 2 months from 22th January 2014. Since area of occupied by demonstration rally as “shutdown Bangkok” had been shrunk from beginning of this month and it had been nominal, so I felt just why now?

ただルンピニ公園や政府関係機関周辺の道路の封鎖は続いているし、発砲や爆弾騒ぎも相変わらず続いている。このため、市民の安全確保のために軍隊もあちらこちらに配備もされたまま。
この兵隊さんたち、衛生兵が中心で武装はしていないようだが、街中で迷彩色の軍服を着た兵隊が、偽装された詰め所にいる姿は、やはり観光都市バンコクにはそぐわない。一日も早く普通のバンコクに戻って欲しいと願うばかり。

Some roads are still blocked around Lumpini park and some Governmental facilities and incidents of shooting and bombing have still been happened continiously in these areas, so you can see military here and there in Bangkok for protecting civil life.
These solider seems basically combat medics and not been armed, but solider with camouflaged uniforms in camouflaged tents could not be matched tourists city Bangkok. I only wish Bangkok would be back to normal peaceful scene as soon as possible.

ジャムジュリー 気になる木 / Interesting tree, Jamjuree

タイでジャムジュリーと呼ばれ（実際の発音はチャムチュリーに近い）、英語ではmonkey pod と呼ばれるこの木、ネムノキの花にも似たピンクの花を咲かせる。ジャムジュリーとはヤクの尻尾の毛（で作った小さな箒）のことで、仏教やヒンヅゥー教では王権の象徴ともされているらしい。多分花の形から、この名がついたのだろう。
このジャムジュリー、現チャクリー王朝の中でも名君の誉れの高いラマ５世チュラロンコン王の名前を冠し、タイで最も名門大学とされるチュラロンコン大学のマスコットツリーになっており、Jamjuree art gallery 等チュラ大関係の施設にも、その名前が使われている。
チュラロンコン王の誕生日が火曜日で、そのシンボルカラーのピンクの花を咲かせ、その名前が王権の象徴に結びついてることがチュラ大のマスコットツリーになった由来らしい（チュラ大のシンボルカラーは当然ピンク色）。
ちなみにタイの国花は現プミポン国王（ラマ９世）である月曜日の誕生日の色である黄色の花を咲かせるゴールデンシャワー。

Flower of monkey pod

A tree called Jamjuree (actual pronunciation sounds like chamchuree) in Thai which has same name of small whisk of hair of a yak or a yak's tail, used in various forms as a symbol of royalty or kingship, and as the attribute of several gods in Buddhism, Hinduism and Taoism. The tree called as monkey pod in English blooms pink flower like “silk tree” and shape of flower could be reason of Jamjuree in Thai.
The Jamjuree is a mascot tree of Chulalongkorn University, the oldest and most prestigious University in Thailand and have name of the most respected the king Chulalongkorn, Rama V, fifth monarch of Siam under the House of Chakri, many facilities in Chula University has name of Jamjuree such as a Jamjuree art gallery. The birthday of the king Chulalongkorn was Tuesday and pink is symbol color of Tuesday, that could be one reason Jamujuree was selected and same name of whisk related kingship could be another reason. Symbol color of Chula Univ. is of course pink.
By the way, the national flower of Thailand is a golden shower which has yellow blossom which is symbol color of Monday which is birthday of current King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX.

このジャムジュリー、雨が降ってきたり、日没が近づき夕方５時頃になると、その葉を閉じることから、Rain tree とか5 o'clock treeとも呼ばれている。

ただ、日本では、「この木なんの木？気になる木」 として一番知られていると思う。あそこまで立派なジャムジュリーにはまだお目にかかっていないけど。

バンコクの救急車/ Ambulance in Bangkok

先日、救急車のお世話になった。アパートの自室で緊急事態となり、どこにどう連絡して良いのかわからなかったので、とりあえずアパートの事務室の人に救急車を呼んでもらうように頼んだ。
幸い近くに救急車を持っている私立の総合病院があり、そこは日本語も通じるので、アパートの事務室からそこに救急車の発動を要請してくれたらしい。
ほどなく、専門の看護師さんたちを乗せた病院の救急車が到着、手際よく救急措置をし病院に搬送してもらえたので、大事に至らず３日ほどの入院ですんで本当に良かった。担架がワンタッチでリクライニン椅子になって普通のエレベーターに乗れるなど、ある意味日本より最新の装置を装備しているかもしれない。
後で分かったが、タイには公共の緊急医療システムもあり、専用番号（１６６９）にダイアルすると救急車が手配され近くの病院に無料で搬送してくれるシステムもあるようだが、搬送される病院の指定ができなかったり、また時間がかかり問題も多いようだ。
緊急時に安心して高度な治療を受けるには、多少料金がかかっても、施設の整った私立病院に直接、救急車を要請するのが正解のようだ。 また、渋滞の酷いバンコクでは近い病院を優先的に考えなければならないことも改めて思い知らされた。
ちなみに、今回の救急車の料金は１，０００バーツ。外国人で海外旅行保険に加入していなかったり、支払い能力がないと判断されると救急車に乗せてもらえないこともあるとのこと、それはそれでタイの厳しい現実。
そういうことも考えると、今回のように比較的スムーズに救急車で病院に搬送してもらえたのは、やはりラッキーだったと改めて思った。

I was in emergency situation my family need support by ambulance recently. But I had no idea how to call an ambulance so I called a clerk in a management office in my apartment for her support. I suppose she called to a private general hospital which has own ambulance and Japanese support service.
Soon, an ambulance arrived at my room with their emergency team and they treated my family very efficiently and brought to the hospital, thanks their effective support, my family was able to recover from emergency situation soon after two nights stay in the hospital. The ambulance seemed to be facilitated with cutting edge equipments such as a stretch which easily to change to reclining chair and easily to be carried by a normal lift in an apartment.
I learned later there is a public emergency medical care system in which patients can be carried to nearest hospital by delivered ambulance free of charge by dialing “1669”. But the system still many problems such as impossible to select hospital or taking relatively longer time.
So it could be better to call private hospital directly if you want to be treated well facilitated hospital in very short time. And you should consider distance to hospital with haevy traffic jam.
I paid to the ambulance for THB1,000 but I heard in some cases, it might be rejected by hospital in case of they assessed as no insurance holder or no capacity to pay for medical care. So it is hard aspect of severe Bangkok life.
I realized I was very lucky my family could be treated properly and carried to hospital very smoothly.

渇水で今度は大変なチャオプラヤ/ Drought in Chao Phraya River Basin

ちょうど半年前の雨季には洪水の心配をしていたチャオプラヤ川。その時は、幸い雨季が早く終わりバンコクの大規模な水没は免れたが、今度は逆に早く終わりすぎた雨季と、その後、雨が降らないせいで、水位が下がって大変だという。水位が下がって海水が逆流し、浄水場の海水濃度が上がり、バンコクへの水道供給も危ぶまれているという。

Just half-year ago, it was worried about flood on Chao Phraya river in the last rainy season. Fortunately, by early end of rainy season, massive flood in Bangkok was not suffered, but too little rain in dry season after that is now cause crisis on drought in Chao Phraya River Basin. Now, saltwater intrusion in the lower part of the Chao Phraya River reaches a pumping station which supplies tap water in Bangkok and it causes to suspend its operation.

近くのメークローン川から、水路を使ってチャオプラヤへの水の補給も行っているようだが、インラク政権の米価優遇策によって、米を作りたがっている農家との水争いの側面もあり、また新たな紛争の種にならないか少し心配な面も。
幸か不幸か、水が濁っているチャオプラヤ川、今どのくらいの水深か分からないが、これ以上水位が下がって、ボートやバージの運航にも支障をきたすようになったら、観光や産業に大きな影響がでるのではと心配。

上が今のチャオプラヤの流れ、下の雨季の時の写真と比べると、随分と浮き桟橋が下がっているのがお分かりいただけると思う。

The government decided to feed the Chao Phraya River Basin from Mae Klong River through canal by diverting water flow.
However, many rice farmer also needs irrigation water since they are encouraged to cultivation by high price policy of Yingluck administration. So it has some aspects of water conflicts.
I cannot find current water level of the river since it's muddiness of water, but if it could effect operation of boat or barge in case more declining water level. I am worried about it could have tremendous effect to industry and tourism.

紫色の街路樹/ Purple flower on the road side tree

紫色の街路樹の花が目立ち始めた。花の色は白に近い薄い紫色から濃い紫色までバラエティがあるが、ほとんどがオオバナサルスベリ（バナバ）（Lagerstroemia speciosa）の花のようだ。

In these days, I can see eye-catching purple flowers on road side trees. Although color of flowers are diversified from whitish purple to strong violet, most of them could be giant crepe myrtle （Lagerstroemia speciosa）.

紫色の街路樹といえば１０年ほど前に見たメキシコシティのジャガランダの強烈な印象があったので、バンコクにもないのかと探してみたら、ベンチャシリ公園の一角でまだ幼木のジャカランダが咲いているのを見つけることができた。ただ、残念ながら、まだあまり立派なジャガランダには出会えていない。私の見る限りでは、バンコクの紫色の街路樹ではバナバのほうがずっと優勢な感じがする。

As purple tree flower, I was impressed by beautiful Jacaranda in Mexico city when I visited spring time about ten years ago, I tried to find Jacaranda in Bangkok and I found it in Benchashiri park but very juvenile trees. I think crepe myrtle is much dominant tree than Jacaranda in here in Bangkok as purple tree flowers.

祝 卒業式 バンコク日本人学校/ Congratulation! Graduation ceremony in Thai-Japanese Association School

生徒数約３０００名、日本人学校として世界最大規模のバンコク日本人学校（泰日協会学校）で、小学６年生３００名弱、中学３年生約１５０名が本日めでたく卒業式を迎えた。
バンコクに桜はないが、日本人の間ではタイ桜とも呼ばれるチョンプーパンティップ等の街路樹が綺麗に咲くこの時期に、日本より少しだけ早い卒業式。
卒業式で、立派に育った子供の姿を見て、少し目頭が熱くなるとともに、ここまで育てていただいた先生や学校関係者の皆様に感謝の気持ちで一杯になった。状況の見え難いデモ等の度に、生徒の安全を第一として臨時休校などと行いつつも、必要な行事や学業の進展も考えないといけないという並々ならない先生方の苦労は本当に大変だったと思う。
小学部の卒業生は、そのまま中学部に入学する子も多いが、これを機に日本に戻って日本の中学に進学する子や親の転勤で別の国に転出する子など中学の入学先は結構バラエティ豊か。中学部の卒業生の進学先は、もっとバラエティ豊かに日本各地やタイ、それに世界中に広がっているのだろう。
バンコク日本人学校は日本の年度と同じく４月開始、３月終了だが、４月中旬にタイ正月を迎えその頃が一番暑いタイの気候も考慮して、もともと春休みが長いのだが、今日卒業した小学６年生は４月２０日過ぎの中学入学まで、宿題のない長い長い春休みを謳歌することになる。
我が家の子供も、今日が最後になるかもしれない友達も含め何人かの友達同士で誘い合わせて早速春休みを謳歌にしに出かけていった。まあ今日ぐらいは少し多めに見てあげよう。

Today, a graduation ceremony has been held at a Thai-Japanese Association School, which has more than 3,000 student and it is the largest Japanese school outside Japan, nearly 300 students in a elementary school (6th grader) and around 150 students in a junior high (9th grader) have graduated from the school.
In this season, many tree flowers on the road are blooming colorfully including Chompoo-puntip, which is called Thai Cherry blossom by Japanese in Bangkok instead of Cherry blossom in Japan.
I was slightly moved to tears when I watched my son attending the ceremony with his polite attitude
and I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all school teachers and relating persons in the school. I suppose the effort by staff of school has not been unusual to determine their policy for operating school including temporal school close by anti-government demonstration rally and so on.
Many students graduated from elementary school will enter to junior high in the school but some students will enter a school in japan or other country with their parents. Destination of students graduated from junior high would be more diversified from all over the Japan as well as in Thailand and other countries.
The calendar of the Thai-Japanese Association School begins April and ends March, which is same as school in Japan, but a spring vacation (March to April) is much longer than school in Japan reflecting hot season in Thai and Thai new year in middle of April. So graduates from elementary can enjoy their long long spring vacation without homework from today to after 20 April, which will be a entrance ceremony of Junior high school.
My son has already gone to shopping with some his classmates, some of them could be last occasion to play with, just after the ceremony. So today is special day and I should let him to play.

胃薬ENO/ Anti stomach pain drug ENO

胃の調子があまり良くなくて、日本から持ってきた胃腸薬を飲もうと思ったが、もう最後の１包になっていた。仕方なく、近所の日本語の通じる薬局にその日本の胃薬を持っていき、同じような薬が欲しいと言って出してもらったのがこのENO。

When I tried to take a medicine for my ill condition for my stomach, I found the drug which I brought from Japan was remaining only one piece. So I went to a drug store where pharmacist who can speak Japanese are staying, and asked him to provide similar medicine that I brought from Japan. And I could buy a medicine named “ENO”.

家に帰って、日本の胃薬のように、口に含んで水で流し込もうとしたら、口の中で物凄い勢いで発泡し思わず噴出しそうに・・・。なんとか必死に飲み込んだら、こんどは胃が大きく膨らんで、思わずゲップが・・・。どうもおかしいと思って調べてみたら、水に溶かして炭酸ジュースのようにして飲む薬だった。そういえば日本の胃薬と同じような薬とはいっても、飲み方まで一緒かどうかまでは確認しなったなあ。
ちなみにこの薬、１包１０バーツ約３０円、なんとなく胃は楽になったような感じ。

After I came back to home and tried to put and swallow a one packet with cup of water, but I found it foamed tremendous bubble in my mouth and almost spouted out. I struggled to swallow it and then it expanded my stomach and burped, excuse me!
I found this drug need to be taken after it dissolved in water when I checked through internet. I realized that I asked the pharmacists similar effect drug but I didn't ask him drugs same way to take.
