ハロウィンin Bangkok/ Trick or treat in Bangkok

タイでは、まだ日本や欧米ほどハロウィンが一般的ではないが、今住んでいるアパートは日本人や外国人が多いので、結構、派手にパーティが開かれる。仮装した子供たちは、椰子の木の下の特設会場でゲームを楽しんだ後は、本日のメインイベント、お菓子を求めてアパート内を駆け回る。今日だけは、非常階段も子供たちのために解放される。守衛さんも少し恥ずかしそうに変装してお仕事。

Halloween is not so popular in Thailand than Western countries and Japan. However many Japanese and western people are living in my apartment, so my family can enjoy Halloween party in the apartment. Children in costumes are rambling in my apartment for searching sweets or snacks after they enjoyed special games under palm trees. Emergency stairs are also opened only today. Guard-man of the front door looks a little bit ashamed with costumes.

渋滞のバンコク市内をトラックの荷台に積まれた仏像が移動中。荷台の上でも瞑想されているのか、それとも二人でひそひそ話しか、バンコクらしいちょっと微笑ましい景色。

I found statues of Buddha were on traveling on a track bed in heavy traffic jam in Bangkok. I imagine they are meditating or
whispering in secret conversation? Anyway it was a good scene to make me happy a little bit.

バンコク路線バスいろいろ（その３ エピソード編/ Some stories public bus n Bangkok (part 3, some episodes)

バンコクのバスに乗っていると日本では考えられない事に、時々、出会うことがある。まずは上の写真、この運転手、運転中かなり長い時間携帯電話を話していた。しかも、少なくとも２台以上の携帯に代わる代わる電話がかかってきて会話していた。会話中はずっと片手運転で、後で見ていて大丈夫かとちょっと不安に。

I was able to meet some surprising happenings for which I have seldom scene in Japan. A picture of heading, driver talked on by mobile phones during most of driving time. I recognized he had at least two mobile phones and received and talked phones one after one. During his speaking he drove by one hand and I was worried about safety of driving.

郊外からバンコク市内に戻る時に乗ったバスの運転手は、ダッシュボードの上に小型のDVDプレーヤーを載せて、１時間ぐらいずっと見ながら運転。見ていたのがコメディなのか、周りで一緒に笑っている客もいた、ある意味なんともおおらか。

Once I took a bus around one hour for returning from suburbs to downtown Bangkok, I found potable DVD player in front of a driver. The driver drove with watching DVD movies during his driving. It could be comedy movies that he watched, some passengers surrounding him laughed sometimes together. I was a little bit impressed by such untentioned atmosphere.

渋滞につかまった時に、運転手さんがドアをあけ外に出たので、何かあったのかと心配して見ていたら、やおらタバコを取り出し一服。１本吸い終わって戻ってきたら、ちょうど少し車も流れ出した。偶然なのか慣れているのか？

When a bus caught in heavy traffic jam and could not move, a driver suddenly opened door and got out from the bus. As I watched him cautiously but I found that he took a cigarette and put on a fire on it. After he had finished smoking and returned his sheet, crowed cars began to move. I am not sure he was so familiar with situation or lucky.

写真はないが、バス停でもない、ガソリンスタンド前の路上に止まったので、何かと思ったら、運転手はガソリンスタンドのトイレへ、その間乗客は黙って待っていたり、渋滞時の信号待ちで、運転席で大きく新聞を広げて読む運転手とか、日本では結構、問題になりそうな出来事も、こちらでは結構頻繁に出会うことができる。渋滞が激しく、時刻表もなく、料金も安いので、乗客も運転手に寛容なのか、諦めているのか、これぐらいのことで驚いていてはバンコクでは暮らしていけないのか、いつも乗客が平静なのにもこちらが驚かされる。

Another day, I was in a bus a driver went a rest room after he stopped in front of a gas station where was not bus stop and had to wait him with other patient passengers. Or I found a driver was reading newspaper by wide spreading it during waiting traffic rights, which interval is very long. I am sorry I could not take pictures of these happenings.

Such episodes could be problem in Japan, but here in Bangkok, it looks as usual. It might be because of usual traffic jam, no time table and low fares, passengers in Bangkok could be patient or not expecting much to bus, but I am always impressed such patient and gentle attitude of citizen of Bangkok.

バンコク路線バスいろいろ（その２、エアコンバス）/Some stories on public bus in Bangkok (part 2, air-conditioned bus)

気温の高いバンコクでは、多少値段が高くてもエアコン付バスは有難い。この冷房バス、オレンジ、黄色、青色等があり、料金は距離制で１２、３バーツくらいから２０数バーツぐらい。
車掌さんに、行き先を告げれば、料金を言ってくれるので、その料金を支払えばいいのだが、タイ語の発音が難しいので、なかなか通じないことも多く、結構苦労する。料金が分かっている馴れた路線では、きっちりの金額を出せば、こちらの発音が多少悪くても、大体察して、その金額の切符を渡してくれる。幸い、今まで金額やお釣りを騙されたことはない（と、思う）。ただ、これで、いい気になって、行き先が車掌さんに通じていると思っていて、先日痛い目にあった。

It is very valuable to use air-conditioned bus in tropical high temperature in Bangkok even though a little bit expensive. Color of air-conditioned bus are orange, yellow and blue and fare are depend on distance from THB 12-3 to 20s. When you tell a destination conductor will tell you a fare, but for foreigners it could be difficult to say in complicated Thai pronunciation. When you become familiar with lines and you can give exact fare, conductor may give you a ticket even your pronunciation could be not so good. I wonder I have never been miscalculation or fault intentionally.

バンコクのバスには同じ路線でも、一部、高速道路を使うものがある。この高速利用バスはフロントガラスの所に黄色い札が乗せてあり、区別できるのだが、先日それを見落とし、どうやらそのバスに乗ってしまった。車掌さんに、バス停名を言ってお金を渡して、切符ももらったので、大丈夫だと思いこんでいたのが悪かった（以前、高速バスに間違って乗った時は、車掌さんに教えてもらって慌てて降りたこともあったので安心していた）。
さらに以前、行き先を告げないで均一料金で乗れるエアコン無しのバスで、やはり黄色札の高速バスに乗って、随分遠くまで行かされ、ひどい目にあったことがあった。それ以来、この黄色札には注意していたつもりだった。この時は、車掌さんに行き先も告げたのですっかり安心して乗っていたのだが、気がついた時は、既にバスは高速道路を走行中。かなりあせったが、幸いこのバスは、BTS（高架鉄道）の１０個以上先の駅のあたりで、高速を降りたので、なんとかBTSで戻ることができて、ほっとしたが、馴れた振りをせずに車掌さんに行き先をきっちり伝えるのが大事だと思い直した次第。まあ、バンコクはタクシー料金も安く、間違ったところに行っても、最後はタクシーで２００バーツも出せば、必ず市内に戻ってこられるのでなんとかなるのだが。
あとオレンジ色や赤色のボードもあるようで、そのあたりは先日書いた日本語の路線図にも解説されている。

Recently, I believed to take normal bus since I told my destination and conductor gave me a ticket. But it was express bus which runs highway in a middle and skip my destination stop. When I noticed it was express bus it was too late and it run highway more than 10km. Fortunately it stops near BTS station far more 10 stations of my destination and I could come back using BTS sky train.
This express bus can be noticed by yellow signboard in front of bus, and I believed I am cautious on yellow board because I made similar mistake with without air-conditioned bus once. However I made same mistake even I told my destination to the conductor and I believed he understood my destination but he did not. So I should confirm his understanding.
Besides yellow board, special bus are indicated orange or red board, so you need to be careful such boards.

バンコク路線バスいろいろ（その１）/ Some stories on public bus in Bangkok (Part1)

バンコクの公共バスは路線が複雑な上、種類も多く、また行き先の記載もタイ語しか書かれていないことが多く、ちょっと利用しにくい。しかし、料金が安く、バス専用路線もところどころにあり、時間帯によってはタクシーよりも早く目的地に着けることもある。私も少しずつバスを利用する機会が増えてきた。日本では考えられないハプニングも時々あり、バスも結構楽しめる。
タイ語が流暢ではなく、あまり土地勘がない外国人にとって、バスを利用するには、路線図が必須、幸い日本語のものもあり、バスを利用する際にはこれ一冊あればかなり便利。バスの乗り方なども親切に解説されている。
バスの種類は色々あるが、大きく分けると冷房付と冷房無しの２つに分けられる。料金は、赤バスと呼ばれる一番よく見る公社直営のもの（上の写真）が、一律６．５バーツ、民間委託のオレンジやピンクのちょっと派手なものが一律８バーツ、同じ番号のバスでも直営と民間委託の両方走っている路線もある。料金は一律なので、難しい発音の地名を言わなくて、無言で料金を払えばよいので初心者にも利用しやすい。ただ慣れていない路線では車掌さんに目的地を確認したほうが確実だし、親切な車掌さんなら、目的地が近づくと教えてくれる。

It is a little bit hard for foreigners to use public bus in Bangkok, since many kind of buses and complicated lines as well as only Thai language is shown on the signboards and so on. However fare is very cheap and sometimes bus is faster than taxi since some bus can run special lane, so opportunity to use bus is increasing for my case. And sometimes I can have unique experience which I cannot have in Japan.
For the foreigners bus line map is crucial to use bus and fortunately I can find Japanese version of the map in Bangkok, also it shows how to use bus in Bangkok.
There are many kind of bus in Bangkok, but basically it can be divided in air-conditioned or without air condition. The fare for so called “red bus” without air condition which is operated by municipal public company is THB 6.5 for all line and fare of private company painted orange or pink is THB 8. In some line both public and private company runs same line.
Since price is one-price, I don't need to tell a destination in difficult Thai pronunciation, so easy to ride. But you would be better to confirm destination with car conductor in case of you are not familiar with the line, and sometimes kind conductor teach you the bus stop when it approach.

この冷房無しのバス、運が良ければ、無料バスに乗ることができる。バスの前後と横に、青色の帯に白文字で「市民の税金により無料運行」のような意味のことが書いてあり、左から５、６文字にWSに似たタイ語の文字があるのが目印。さらに、この無料バス、乗客数の把握のためか無料と書いた切符までくれることもある。最初は分からずに、料金を払おうとしたが、所掌さんににっこり笑われこの切符を渡された時は、少し幸せな気分になれた。
この冷房無しのバス、渋滞や雨の時に混んでいると、やはり少し辛い。少し料金は高いが、そんなとき時でも快適な冷房バスの話は次回に。

If you are lucky you may be able to get on fare free bus. This free bus can be distinguished white letters on blue banner on front,back and side of the bus and it means “this bus is operated by citizen's tax” and you can find 5th and 6th letter similar to “WS” means free in Thai. Besides it is free, sometime you will be given ticket showing free by conductor.
Disadvantage of bus without air condition is that you may feel inconvenient when it is in traffic jam and/or heavy rain and over crowded. I will write on the story of air-conditioned bus in next article.

煮込みアヒル肉入りバミー（中華緬）、到中和にて/ Bammy (Chinese noodle) with stirred duck meal at Jya-Jhon-Woe.

インド人街パフラットの近くに行く用事があったので、フリーペーパーDACO（ホームページのリンクはこちら）の最新号に紹介されていた到中和（ジョージョンウォー）という店で名物料理、煮込みアヒル肉入りバミー（中華緬）を食べた。緬を食べた後、店員さんから「日本人？」と聞かれたので、この雑誌を見せながら「日本人ですよ。これを見て来たんです。」と応えると、どうもこの雑誌を持ってきたのは私が初めてだったらしく、店員さんたちは、「ここに写っているの私！」とか大騒ぎになって、店主さんと思しき人たちと早速記念写真に。
DACOさんの御陰で楽しいひと時を過ごすことができた。正直言って、このお店、外から見ると少々暗くて、この記事がなかったら、入るのにちょっと勇気がいるお店。
バミーは味の染み込んだアヒルが美味しかった（一杯４５バーツ、約１５０円）。

When I went Phahurat (Little India in Bangkok) yesterday, I visited a Chinese noodle restaurant named Jya-Jhon-Woe. This restaurant is introduced in the newest issue of DACO, Japanese free-paper in Bangkok (links here, but sorry for only Japanese) with a famous dish of Bammy (Chinese noodle) with stirred duck meal. When I was asked “ Are you a Japanese?” after I ate this delicious menu, I replied with showing this free-paper magazine “Yes, I have read this article and I come here”. So, a waitress was so pleased and we took a picture with a master and shopkeepers of the restaurant with the magazine.
I must be first guest with this magazine and I could have very happy time, thanks DACO for good article. Without this article, I might be hesitate to enter since it looks a little bit dark from ouitside.
This Bammy with good stock of duck was very tasty (THB 45, USD 1.5).

モーケンというお菓子とマナオ（タイのレモン）/ Khanom Mo Kaeng (sweets) and Manao (Thai lemon)

ホアヒンとバンコクの丁度中間ぐらいにあるペチャブリー県のターヤンという街に立ち寄り、このあたりの名物カノムモーケン（カノムはタイ語でお菓子と言う意味）を買ってきた。モーケンというこのお菓子、スコタイのも名物らしいが、ペチャブリーのものはバンコクでは買えないと薦められ、プレーン（５０バーツ）とナッツ入り（５５バーツ）を買ってきた。小麦粉と卵とパームシュガーで作るらしく、ちょっと固めのプリンのようでパームシュガーのコクもあって美味しい。買ったお店はメーブンロンというお店だが、メーというのが菓子職人という意味らしく、つまりブンロンさんのお店ということらしい。

On the back way to Bangkok from Hua Hin, I dropped in a town named Tha Yang in Phechaburi province, which is located almost half way to Bangkok. I bought famous Khanom Mo Kaeng, Khanom means sweets in Thai, I heard Mo Kaeng is also famous in Sukhothai but I was recommended to buy since Mo Kaeng in Phechaburi cannot be to buy in Bangkok. I bought both plain Mo Kaeng (THB 50) and with nuts (THB). It is made of flours, egg and Tanot (palm) sugar anda little bit similar to custard pudding but it is harder and rich taste thanks to palm suggar. The name of shop was Mae Bun Ron, and Mae means Thai dessert specialists, so Mae Bun Ron means Bun Ron's sweets shop.

このターヤンの街のはずれには大きな野菜の卸売市場もあり、行った時は午後３時を過ぎ、がらんとしていたが、まだ残っていたおばさんから、マナオ（タイ人はレモンというが、どちらかといえばライムに近い感じ）を一袋（約７ｋｇで１５０バーツ）買い求めた。バンコクに戻って友人・知人におすそ分けしたが、当分マナオには不自由しないと思う。なお、マナオの横に写っているのは、ビンロウジュの実、薦められたが、丁重にお断りした（ちょっと興味はあったけど）。

And outside of Tha Yang, there is a large vegetable wholesale market. When I visited the market, it was past 3:00 pm, and very few people were there, but I could buy a pack of Manao (7kg THB150), Thai people called it as Thai lemon but I think it is similar to lime. Although I presented some of them to my friends and acquaintances, but I can enjoy Manao for a while.
You can find unique fruit besides Manao, it is Areca nut. I was recommended to try it, but I gently rejected. Honestly to say, I was a little bit interested in.

ここ数日、バンコクはヴェトナムに上陸した台風２５号の影響もあってか、ずっと強い雨が降り続いている。この雨、上流でも結構降っているみたいで、チャオプラヤ川の水位がどんどん上がってきた。月曜日にすでに結構上がっていた水位が今日の夕方行ってみると、本堤防まではまだ余裕があるものの、堤防の内側の遊歩道は既に水没、川からボートで見ても、堤防の低いところや直接川に面した建物は既に水に浸かっていそうなところも。これ以上水かさが増えると危ないような気もするが、地元の人はあまり気にする風でもなく、大丈夫なのかなあ？

In a couple days, we have a lot of rain in Bangkok, it could be affected by a typhoon Nari landed n Vietnam. And it is also heavy raining in upstream so water level of Chao Phraya river become higher gradually. When I saw the level in this Monday it has already much higher than as usual, and today, promenade of the river side which is inside of dyke has been already under water although the height of dyke is still enough. When I saw the scene from a public boat, some buildings or structures directly facing river or on the lower place seems already flooded. I worried about it could become serious, however people in here looks as usual.

浮き桟橋が、陸地に比べ随分高くなっているのが分かる、陸地部分は一部冠水。この男の人、ライフジャケットを着てぷかぷか浮かんで何をしているのか？
Floating pier seems much higher than land and some lower land seems under water. I am not sure what is doing this man floating with life jacket.

フアヒンの週末（乗馬編）/ Weekend in Hua Hin (Part3, Horse riding)

浜辺でシーフードを楽しんだ後は、砂浜で乗馬を楽しむこともできる。料金は時間制で、一番気軽に楽しめるのは、数百メートルの砂浜を往復して約１５分で３００バーツ。小柄のおとなしい馬で、最初はおじさんが手綱を引いてくれるが、慣れてくると軽い早足くらいを楽しむことができる。暴れん坊将軍とまではいかなくとも、少しだけ爽快に風を切る気分を味わえる。

You can enjoy horse riding on sandy beach of Hua Hin after you enjoyed seafood on sea-side. Fare of horse riding is according to the time, and most casual course for beginner is THB 300 for one turn for beach about 500-600m and about 15 minutes. As horse is gentle and small, you can enjoy a kind of trot after guided by instructor. So you can feel a kind of feeling of hero of TV drama.

ホアヒンの週末（ディナー編）/ Weekend at Hua Hin (Part 2, Dinner)

前の記事で昼食とデザートのことを書いたが、ホテルで少しのんびりして、今度は桟橋の上の別のレストランでディナー。ディナーは少し奮発して、蒸し渡り蟹（０．５ｋｇ、２匹　約４００バーツ？）、ウチワエビ(rock robuster)のガーリック揚げ（４００バーツ）、ココナッツに入ったエビの卵とじカレー（プーパッポンカレーのエビ版のようなもの）（２００バーツ？）。値段があやふやなのは、潮風に吹かれ少々ビールを飲みすぎて料理の値段の確認を怠ったため。美味しいカニを一生懸命食べると、つい無言に・・・

I wrote about lunch and desert at Hua Hin beach in a last article. I spent relax time in a Hotel after I took a desert and then went to another seafood restaurant on a pier. I enjoyed a little bit excellent dinner than lunch. Steamed swimming blue crab, (0.5kg, 2 pieces about THB 400?), fried rock robuster with garlic (THB 400), shrimp curry with eggs and coconuts in young coconut (THB 200?). I am sorry I forgot to confirm the price of each menu since I drunk beer a little bit too much in cozy sea breeze. When we tasted delicious crab we forgot to speak.

バンコクの西約２００ｋｍ車で約３時間半のフアヒンは王室の離宮もあり落ち着いた感じのビーチリゾート。バンコクの東１６０ｋｍの有名なパタヤに比べるとずっとファミリー向き。朝早くにバンコクを出発すると昼前には到着できて桟橋のシーフードレストランで昼食を楽しめる。今日の昼は軽めに、エビの天ぷら（渡り蟹の天ぷらを頼んだら売り切れでエビに変更）（１８０バーツ）、カキの卵焼き（１８０バーツ）、シーフード焼きそば（１８０バーツ）を注文、値段は少々観光地価格だが、潮風に吹かれて食べるシーフードは格別。食後のデザートはヒルトンホテル前のマンゴー屋さん（名前はタイ語で書かれていて分からないが、ヒルトンホテル前のマンゴー屋さんで通じるぐらい有名）でカオニャオマムアン（マンゴーともち米のココナッツミルクかけ；８０バーツ）を買って、ホテルで食べれば大満足。

Hua Hin, located about 200km west from Bangkok and have a detached palace, is a calm beach resort. It is contrast to famous Pataya resort, which is located 160km east from Bangkok and much calm and suitable to family vacation. You can arrive here before noon if you start early morning from Bangkok. Today we ordered deep fried shrimp (THB 180) for which I ordered instead of fried crab which was sold out, oyster soft omelet (THB 180), fried sea food yellow noodle (THB 180), I feel price is little bit expensive as for tourist price but taste is great in sea breeze.
For a desert, I took away a mango with sticky rice ,THB 80, from famous shop I don't know the name of shop but famous as in front of the Hilton hotel.

ギンジェー（ベジタリアン週間）とコンビニ/ Vegetarian festival (Gin Jay) and convenience store

ギンジェーについては昨年も書いたが、今年は１０月５日から始まっていて、屋台やスーパー等、街の中に黄色い三角の旗が溢れている。その中でも、コンビニでのギンジェーの旗が、今年は一層、目立つように感じる。冷凍食品、パン、インスタント緬等々、約１０日間菜食に徹する人にとって、コンビニでこういった商品が扱われるのは、まさに便利なのだろうと思うが、どうもそれだけではないように感じる。少しだけギンジェーを試して見たい人向けのいわゆる便乗商法のような気がする。かくいう私もにわか菜食主義者になって、冷凍弁当やパンを試してみた。味の方はと聞かれれば、ギンジェーが約１０日でよかったとだけ答えておこう。

I wrote an article about a Vegetarian festival (Gin Jay) last year. It has been started from 5 October in this year, and I can find many small triangle yellow flags at street venders or in a supermarket. Particularly, I feel many flags or pop-ups can be found in the convenience stores. Many foods such as freeze foods, breads, instant noodles and so on are marked as vegetarian foods. I understand it must be really convenience for people who need to follow strict rules under vegetarian, but it seems not only for true vegetarian. It must be also for temporally vegetarian such as me. I tried to eat some vegetarian foods at a convenience store. If I were asked on tastes, I would like to answer that I would like appreciate the Gin Jay is only ten-days and not for a year long.

石榴の蕾と実と生ジュース/ Pomegranate, flower bud, fruit and fresh juice

日本では春から初夏にかけて花が咲き、秋の始めの今頃実がなる石榴。常夏のバンコクではいつでも庭先に実がなっているような気がする。同じ木に花（蕾）と実がなっているという日本では見られないような光景も。
そんなバンコクでも、９月を過ぎると、街のあちこちで石榴を絞って生ジュースを売る屋台が目立つようになる。これは中国から輸入した石榴を絞っているもの。生ジュース１本４０バーツ（約１３０円）。

　　

　　

Pomegranate, in Japan, blooms in spring to early summer and fruits ripen in early autumn in this season but here in Bangkok, it seems ripen always. You can see flower bud and ripen fruits on same tree which you may not see in Japan.
However, in this season, I can find many street venders sell fresh squeezed pomegranate juice everywhere in Bangkok. They sell fresh juice using imported pomegranate from China. Price of one bottle if juice is THB 40 (USD 1.3) 。

カオサン通り/ Khaosan Road

バックパッカーの聖地として知られるカオサン通り。安く長期に滞在したいバックパッカー向けの、ゲストハウスや洗濯屋さん、衣料品、リサイクルの雑貨など旅行者向けの多種多様な店がこの通りを中心に並んでいる、日本ではちょっと考えられないような店も。日本人や東洋人向けのゲストハウスや食堂もないわけではないが、欧米人（タイではファランと呼ばれている）向けの店が多く、またその独特の雰囲気を味わいたいタイの若者も多く集まってくる。TATTOOを入れた欧米人やタイの若者が闊歩する通りは、一般の日本人観光客には、少し馴染みにくい感じもあるが、昔よりも随分と治安もよくなり清潔になったという。土産物を探したり、ちょっと休憩してパブでビールを飲むのも、価格はバックパッカー向けに設定されているので、結構、リーズナブル（ただ掘り出し物価格とはいかないかも）。

At a Khaosan Road, well known as Mecca of back-packers, all kind of facilities for tourists who wish to stay as long and cheap as possible, such as casual guest house, laundry service, cloths and recycle shops, can be found around this road. A few inns and casual restaurants for Japanese or Asian tourists can be found in this area but a lot of shops and accommodations are provided for western peoples; they are called Farang in Thai. Also many young Thai people come here for feeling unique atmosphere in this area. For many Japanese tourists who are not back-packers, it might be little bit horrifying to see many westerners or young Thai who have tattoo on their body are rambling on the road, although this area is said to become safer and cleaner than used to be.
You can enjoy selecting souvenir or taking a rest with drinking a jag of beer at a pub along the road with reasonable price for back-packers, but it not so cheapest.
