菩提樹（インドボダイジュ）/ Bodhi Tree/Bo tree/Sacred Fig Ficus religiosa

　　

お釈迦様が、その木の下で悟りを開いたという菩提樹。熱心な仏教国であるタイではお寺の境内では勿論、街角でもきれいな布などが巻かれ祀られているところを良く見ることができる。上の写真は、ワットチャナソンクランの２００年を超える立派な大木。熱帯性のイチジクの仲間で、寒さには弱く残念ながら日本では育たないようだが、生命力は強く、岩や建物の隙間に根を張り巡らせたり、他の植物の幹の周りに自分の幹を張り巡らせる、いわゆる締め殺しの木の性質を持つという。アユタヤのワット・プラ・マハタートの有名な仏頭を抱え込んだ菩提樹やチャオプラヤ川のコンクリート護岸に根を張って逞しく育つ姿にその性質を見ることができる。

Bodhi Tree (Bo tree) or Sacred fig, under this tree, Gautama Buddha is said to have achieved enlightenment. The tree can be seen enshrined by decorated with colorful clothes everywhere in Thailand not only in temples. The pictures above are taken in Wat Chanasongkram and the tree is more than 200 year old. The Bodhi tree is a species of tropical fig family and weak to cold temperature, so the tree can not survival in cold winter in Japan. However the tree has vital energy to survive in tropical climate since roots can penetrate small crack of rock or building and vine/stem can hold and wind up other plant's stem, it is called strangler figs.
You may find such a nature in famous Buddha Head in a Bodhi tree located in the temple of Wat Phra Mahathat in Ayutthaya or a tree hanging on concrete wall of banks of Chao phraya river.
