バクテー(肉骨茶）in クアラルンプル/Bak kut teh; Chinese Herbal Pork Ribs Soup in KL

ぶつ切りの豚の骨付きあばら肉や内臓肉を漢方薬に用いる八角・シナモン・胡椒等のスパイスと中国醤油で煮込んだ料理で、マレーシアやシンガポールで有名な料理。白菜やしいたけ・油揚げのようなものも入っていて、中国語で肉骨茶と書き、ウーロン茶のような色であるが、実際にお茶は入っていなくて、色々なスパイスを煮出したものらしい。骨の周りの肉に独特のスパイスの効いたスープが浸み込んでいるが、結構あっさりしていておいしい。ただ、一番の美味しい骨周りの肉はかぶりつかざるを得ず、あまり上品な食べ方はできない。

Bak kut teh,famous Chinese herbal pork ribs soup in Malaysia and Singapore. It consists of meaty pork ribs and offal simmered in a complex broth of herbs and spices (including star anise, cinnamon, cloves, garlic and so on) and Chinese soy sauce for hours with some vegetables such as Chinese cabbage, brown mushrooms and fried to-fu.
Literally means in Chinese character is “meat–bone-tea”and colour of soup looks like oolong tea but no tea seems included.
You can enjoy unique herbal taste of pork ribs meats and but not so strong tastes in spite of impression of looking. However it could be difficult to eat this soup elegantly since you need to bite meals with bone.

フィッシュヘッドカレー/ Fish head curry

人種と文化の混ざり合うシンガポールでは、中華系、マレー系、インド系等色々な料理を楽しむことができるが、このフィシュヘッドカレーは、数少ないシンガポール独特のメニュー。以前シンガポールの姉妹都市的なブルネイダルサラームでも食べたことがあるが、これも美味しかった。
昔、シンガポールの魚市場で食べられずに捨てられる魚の頭を見て、頭の旨さを知っている南インド出身者が始めたのがこのメニューと言われている。ガルーパとかグルーパと呼ばれるハタの仲間やタイ等の白身の魚の頭を豪快にカレーで煮込んだもので、少しオクラ等の野菜が入っていた。リトルインディアでこのカレー発祥の店と言われている店で、一番小さいサイズ（Ｓ）、２０シンガポールドル（約１，６００円）をオーダー。癖のない白身の肉に程よくカレーの味がしみこみ、ご飯にも良くあい美味しかった。折角来たのでナンやタンドリーチキンも頼んだところ、家族３人では、少し食べ切れなかったのが残念。おまけの写真はフローズンストロベリーラッシー。

You can enjoy many kinds of cuisine, such as Chinese, Malaysian or Indian in Singapore since it is called crossroad of people and culture. However a Fish-head curry is a one of the few original or genuine Singaporean cuisine, I suppose. Several years ago, I ate this menu in Brunei darussalam which is like a sister city of Singapore, and it was also very nice. It was said when someone came from South India saw fish-heads were thrown out as garbage without eating and they started this recipe since they knew good taste of fish-head. It is simmered fish-head with white flesh, such as garoupa or grouper, sea bream or red sniper in curry spices with some vegetables like okra. I visited a restaurant which is said one of the original restaurant developed recipe, and I ordered small dish of it for SG$ 20 about US$16. It was very delicious and good combination of curry spices, taste of fish and boiled rice. As I ordered some other dishes such as tandoori chicken, nan and so on, so I regret to say I could not eat completely because of full of stomach of our three family members, although all dishes were so delicious. Last picture shows a frozen strawberry lassi.

天空のプール/ Swimming Pool in the sky

地上５７階、約２００ｍの高さに、３棟のホテルの屋上を船が繋ぐような形で作られた、シンガポールの空中庭園プール。プールサイドから見ると、プールの水がビルの反対側に流れ落ちているようにも見える。恐る恐るプールの端まで行けば安全だと判り、安心してマーライオンやシンガポールの街の展望を楽しむことができる。プールは大人専用、ファミリー用、子供用にエリア分けされており、大人専用エリアのデッキチェアには、ウエイター呼び出しボタンもついていて、プールサイドでゆったりと飲みながら景色を楽しむこともできる。夕陽や夜景もそれぞれ素敵だが、プールに入って、街を背景に写真を綺麗に取るには、逆光にならない午前中のほうがお勧め、プールも比較的空いているように感じた。

A swimming pool on a sky park shaped flying ship connecting top of three hotel buildings on the 57th story, about 200m height. On the pool side, you can see water is flowing down from the edge of the pool. By approaching to the edge of the pool step by step cautiously, you may aware it could be safety and you can enjoy panoramic view of a Merlion and skyscrapers of downtown Singapore. The pool is divided into three areas; adults-only, family and small children, and deck-chairs in adult area have buttons for calling waiters and you can enjoy drinking and relaxing with fantastic view from the pool side.
Both sunset and night view are magnificent, however I also recommend to visit there in the morning to take good pictures of your face with backdrop of skyscrapers for avoiding against the light and relatively few guests in the pool, I suppose.

ホテルは３棟合せて２５００室の客室があり、道を挟んで巨大カジノ、高級ブティックなどの入ったショッピングモール、劇場などで一つの街を形成していて、外に出なくてもいつまででも楽しんでいられる。もちろん、地下鉄の駅にも直結しているので、簡単にダウンタウンにも出かけることもできる。

The hotel has more than 2,500 guest rooms in three buildings and is forming small city with a gigantic Casino, shopping mall of elegant boutiques, theaters and so on. So you can enjoy all day long without going outside. Of course you can easily go to downtown by subway; a subway station directly connected to the hotel.

王様中の王様・ドリアンの王様/ King of kings, King of Durian

旅行中のクアラルンプールの屋台でとてつもなく美味しいドリアンに出会った。猫山王（Mao Shan Wang）というユニークな名前の品種で、普通のドリアンの約２倍の値段だったが、コクのある甘みと柔かい舌触りは、果物の王様と呼ばれるドリアンの中でも、まさしく王様中の王様といった感じ。屋台街で有名なアロー通りで食事を取った後、試しに食べてみてびっくり。テーブルに置いてある薄いプラスティック手袋で気軽に楽しむことができる。バンコクでは、モントーン種が臭いも少なく美味しいと思っていたが、残念ながら猫山王には敵わないと思った。また、バンコクでは、ドリアンを気軽に楽しむこういった場所が少ないのも残念なところ。食事の際にけっこうビールを飲んだのも忘れ、夢中で食べた。屋台のおじさんに、「どうだ旨いだろう」言われ、「これまで食べた中で、最高のドリアンだ！」と思わず言ってしまった。ドリアンが好きな方で、マレーシアかシンガポールに行く機会があれば、是非試されることをお勧めしたい。１リンギットは約３０円。

I ate a tremendously delicious Durian in Kuala Lumpur. This variety has a unique name called “Mao Shan Wang” which means “King of mountain cat” and I believe this is a King of Durian called King of fruits with rich tastes and soft texture although price was about twice than other variety. I tried it at a street stall on the famous Alor street after dinner on same street with thin plastic glove on the table. I was thinking Mon Thong variety is the best variety of the Durian but I realized “Mao Shan Wang” could be superior than “Mon Thong” and also I regret to say there are very few such places to enjoy Durian easily in Bangkok. I really enjoyed Mao Shan Wang without thinking about beer that I drunk during my dinner. “ This is the best Durian I have ever eaten”, I replied instantly when I was asked my impression by the shopkeeper. I strongly recommend to try to taste a “Mao Shan Wang” if you have an opportunity to visit Malaysia or Singapore and you like a durian. 1 Malaysian Ringgit is about 0.3 USD.

格安航空会社/LCC (Low cost carrier)

格安航空会社の中でも有名なAir Asiaのバンコク、クアラルンプール便を今回利用してみた。２時間あまりの短いフライトだが、オーディオやブランケット等のサービスはなく、飲み物、食べ物は全て有料、座席の前後の間隔も座るのにぎりぎりの広さで、徹底的にコスト低減に努めていて、一種気持ちよい。座席も出口に近い席や非常口の席（少しだけ前後の幅が広くなっている）だけ赤いヘッドカバー（ホットシート）で少しだけ高い値段設定になっている。キャビンアテンダントのユニホームもジーンズにラフなシャツとコストを節約している。
乗ってみて感じたのは、座席間隔が狭いので、一人で乗るときは、通路席を確保しないと少し大変ということ。

I took a flight of Air Asia, a famous low cost carrier, from Bangkok to Kuala Lunpur. There are no audio service, no blanket as well as no free food and drink. I felt width between each row is also minimum necessary for sitting, for cost saving. Seats of some front rows and near emergency exits that has a little bit wider space between rows and these are called hot seats and with high price as well as red head cover.
Uniforms of cabin attendants which consists of jeans and casual top also very cost conscious.
I understand when you take q\a flight without accompany passengers, you should better to take an aisle sides since space between row is too little to move.

バンコク・ドムアン国際空港 Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok

７年ほど前にスワナブーム空港が開港するまでは、バンコクの空の玄関口だったドムアン空港は、今はエアアジアやいくつかのLCC（格安航空会社）と貨物便が使用する空港となっている。今回エアアジアを利用するため１０年ぶりくらいにドムアン空港に出かけた。外観は老朽化が進み、出発ロビーもセルフチェクインカウンター等コスト重視で華やかさに欠ける。搭乗ロビーの免税店等も昔に比べかなり少なくなって寂しい感じもするが、コスト重視の乗客にとっては丁度良いのかなとも思う。

Don Mueang Airport which used be main international airport in Bangkok before Suvarnabhumi Airport started to operation about 7 years ago, now only used for some LCC (Low cost carrier) and cargo. I visited the Don Mueang airport first time more than 10 years to get a flight of Air Asia. Outside of the building becomes much ramshackle and departure floor is dominated by self-checking counter and looks simple and not so blight. Duty free shopping stores also becomes fewer but might be not so bad for cost conscious traveler.

タイの結婚式/ wedding ceremony in Thai traditional style

先日、知人に招かれタイの結婚式に出席した。新婦は日本の方だが、新婦の希望でタイスタイルで結婚式が行われた。
タイのラッキーナンバー９にちなみ、９時９分に象に乗った新郎が花嫁の待つ式場に登場。新郎は、いくつかの障害を乗り越え、花嫁ととともに両家の親族の前に膝まづくと、持参金を持って交渉の儀式が行われる。
交渉が成立し指輪の交換の後、９人の僧侶による読経と新郎新婦への祝福が行われ、その後、新郎新婦から感謝の意を込めて僧侶に食事が出される。僧侶が食事の間は、一般参列者はしばしの休憩、さすが僧侶を大事にするタイならではと感心。

Recently, I was invited a wedding ceremony in Thai style, although a bride is a Japanese lady. I heard she requested such Thai traditional style.
At 9 past 9 o’clock, 9 is lucky number in Thai, a groom ride on a elephant appeared in front of a ceremony house in where the bride was waiting for him. After he managed over some obstacles provided, the groom and bride kneed down in front of their parents and relatives for starting a dowry ceremony. After a successful negotiation with dowry, they changed their wedding rings in front of their relatives.
Then 9 monks chanted sutra and cerebrated a new couple with holy water. While the groom and bride served meals of monks for expressing thanks to their work, other attendance were waiting. As Thai people so religious to respect monk and I was impressed to see their natural behavior to the holy people.

このあと、参列者全員が順番に、新郎新婦の手に聖水を注ぎながら、お祝いの言葉をかけて約３時間で儀式は終了。出席前は３時間は長いかと思ったが、ドラマチックに儀式が進み、あっという間に３時間が過ぎた。
その後は参列者全員で庭でのブフェランチ。天気も良くて、楽しく美味しいタイ料理を満喫した。ランチの間は、西洋式にウェディングケーキの入刀と花嫁のブーケトスも行われ、午前中の厳粛な感じとはうってかわって華やかに、あっと言う間に楽しい時が過ぎていった。
素敵な結婚式にお招きいただいたご両家に感謝するとともに、お二人が末永くお幸せにすごされる事をお祈りします。

Finally all attendance poured holy water to hands of new couple with words of congratulation one by one, then almost 3 hour ceremony had been finished. Honestly, I had been wondering 3 hour ceremony could be a little bit long before attending ceremony, but I really felt the ceremony was passed in short time since each rites had been operated very dramatically.
We enjoyed a buffet lunch on cozy lawn in front of the ceremony house. I really enjoyed delicious Thai cuisine under bright sunshine. During the lunch time, celebration in western style such as wedding-cake cutting and bouquet toss were played cheerfully in contrast to grave atmosphere in the morning.
I really appreciate for kind and gracious invitation from their family and wish their eternal happy life.

仏像屋さん/ Buddha statue Store

熱心な仏教徒の国であるタイでは、仏具やお供え物を売る仏教関係の店を良く見かけるが、先日、こんな大きな仏像を売っている店の前を通りかかった。店に入りきらない仏像を店頭に展示してあったが、熱心な信者が買っていくのか、お寺が買っていくのかわからないが、どうも注文を受けてから作ったのではなさそうな感じ。売れないとずっとこのまま歩道に置かれているのだろうか？

I passed by a store which sells big Buddha statues displayed in front of the store. I often find stores which sells Buddhist items or offerings for religious peoples in Bangkok but it was very eye-catching. I don’t know who will buy such big statues, religious believer or temple? I am very curious about it, and it could not be order-made.

１周年/ 1st Anniversary

ちょうど１年前、バンコクの一番高いビルバイヨーク２ホテルの展望台に登ったときに偶然見た彩雲。それをきっかけに始めたこのブログも１年になった。最初は続くかどうかちょっと不安だったが、勝手気ままに他愛のない記事を書いて、皆様の温かいコメントや「いいね」にも励まされ、１年で書いた記事が、この記事を併せて１２３、平均すると３日に１回の割合で記事を書くことができた。最近は「にほんブログ村」のアクセスランキングにも参加し、アクセス数も少し増え、８，３００を超えた。
ブログを書き始めて良かったことは、以前よりも少し注意深く周りを見ることができるようになったこと。一方、物事を見るときに、ついネタを探すようになり「あっ、こう書くとブログになるかな」とか、つい食事をとってても記事のことを考えてしまい、先日もレストランで、家族から「これ写真撮らなくていいの？」と言われてしまい、ちょっと苦笑い。
iPhoneを常に持ち歩くようになって、いつでも気軽に写真を撮れるのも大きな助けになっている。
これからもバンコク生活を楽しみながら、気楽に記事が書ければ思っていますので、よろしくお願いします。

I decided to launch this personal blog just 1 year ago when I found cloud iridescence from Baiyoke 2 sky Hotel which is the tallest building in Bangkok. Just after I started the blog, I was a little bit suspicious if I could continue to write articles. As I was encouraged by all of your generous words and heartfelt nice comment I was able to keep on writing and I have write 123 article and more than 8,300 accesses to my blog also I joined access ranking supported by “Nihon Blog Mura” (Japan Blog village) recently.
I feel good point of keeping blog writing could be I become more cautious on surrounding things however sometimes I found I am too cautious on the matters. A couple days ago, my family asked if I need not to take pictures when we were taking dinner and I was a little bit assumed of.
I recognize iPhone is always helpful for taking interesting pictures whenever I happen to see.
I appreciate your kind comment on my articles on my funny and interesting daily life in Bangkok.

チャオプラヤで小船を漕ぐ人/ A man crossing Chao Phraya river by rowing a tiny boat

先日、バンコクの水上交通の大動脈チャオプラヤ川を小さな手漕ぎボートで横切っている人を見た。ロングテールボートやディナークルーズのような観光船、水上ボートや渡し舟、さらには荷物を満載したはしけ等が頻繁に行き交うこの川で、他の船に衝突されないのか、こちらが心配してしまう。下は、チャオプラヤ川を行き交う様々な船の写真。

I found a man crossing Chao Phraya river, main artery in Bangkok, by rowing a tiny boat. There are many kind of vessels and ships such as long-tail boats, dinner-cruise ships, ferries, water buses and barges crossing frequently in the river. I am a little bit worried about if he could be collided by other ships. The pictures below shows many kind of ships crossing the Chao Phraya river.

　　　　　

　　　

　　

フードコート/Food courts

バンコクのデパートやショッピングセンターには大抵フードコートが設けられていて、気軽にタイ料理などの軽食を楽しむことができる。フードコートにも大衆的な所から、デパートの中の和食まで扱うちょっと高級なフードコートもある。
最近の我が家のお気に入りのフードコートは、BTS（高架鉄道）アソーク駅／MRT（地下鉄）スクンビット駅近くのショッピングセンターのフードコート。お洒落なショッピングセンターのフードコートの割りに、値段も良心的で種類も豊富。味付けがちょっと濃い気もするが、この値段を考えれば、大満足だと思う。
最近行ってオーダーした料理は以下のとおり。家族３人で十分満腹になった。

豚足煮込みと煮卵　３７バーツ
豚のカリカリ揚げ、モツ煮込みと煮卵　４７バーツ
スキヌードル（すき焼き風味春雨炒め）３３バーツ
豚の生姜焼き　３５バーツ　　　　　
１バーツは約３円。

Almost all department stores and shopping centers have their food court inside and we can easily enjoy Thai light meal in there. There are many kind of food courts from casual type to a little bit elegant one in a luxury department store. Recent our favorite food court of my family is in a shopping mall near Asok station of BTS (sky train) / Sukhunvit station of MRT (subway) .
Even in a very fashionable shopping center, there are plenty of menu with very reasonable prices. I felt the taste was a little bit strong to me but it was enough to me be satisfied. I can show you an example of our orders of last time and these were enough for making full of stomachs of our three members of my family.

参議院選挙在外投票/Overseas ballot for House of Councilors election

昨日、大使館に第２３回参議院選挙の在外投票に行って来た。投票日は７月１５日までで、もう少し選挙戦の動向を見てから投票に行きたかったが、今週末の予定も考え、早めに投票を済ませてきた。日本を出国した際に住民票のあったところが選挙区になり、投票所に用意された分厚いファイルから自分の選挙区の候補者を選んで投票する。投票手続きはやや複雑だが、日曜にも関わらず大使館の職員の方（多分？）に、丁寧に案内してしていただき、快適に投票を済ますことができた。
約２５年前に海外に住んでいた時は、投票権がなく、世界中どこにいても投票できる米国人を羨ましく思ったものだが、こうして投票できることを改めて嬉しく思う。わざわざ、休日の貴重な時間を割いてまで、投票に値する候補者がいるかは、また別な話だが。

Yesterday, I went Japanese Embassy in Thailand for voting to 23th House of Councilors election. Although voting period would be by 15 July 2013 and it could be better to find debates between parties before election, I decided to visit since I would be very busy in next weekend. A constituency for voting is allocated a district registered municipality before leaving Japan, I needed to select a candidate from a thick file covered all over Japan. The procedure was a little bit complicated, however thanks to kind instruction by officers in the Embassy, possibly, I could complete voting comfortably.
When I was in abroad about 25 years ago and I had no right for voting to national election, I was envy to citizens in USA since they had already had right for voting wherever they were in the world. So I am very glad I can go for voting. Are there valuable candidates for spending precious time in weekend? It could be controversial.

七夕飾り/Bamboo decoration for Tanabata festival (Star festival)

七夕が近づくと、日本のお店が集まるスクンビットソイ33/1にあるパン屋さんの前には、立派な七夕飾りが立てられる。自分の家で笹飾りが出来ない日本人の子供たちの願い込めた短冊がぎっしり吊るされ、微笑ましい。近づいてよく見ると、結構タイ人も短冊に願いを懸けていて面白い。残念ながら読めないけれど。

Before a Tanabata festival (Star festival), a big bamboo stem and branches decorated with paper strips and ornaments is provided in front of bakery shops in Japanese town along Sukhumvit soi 33/1 for customers. Many Japanese kids who are not able to ornament their own bamboo decoration write on their wishes and hang them on branches, it seems very attractive. I found many Thai people also hang on their wishes as well as Japanese people on the bamboo branches.

純血種のタイ猫の家/ House for genuine Thai cats

古文書によれば２３種もいたといわれるタイの猫も、Wichienmasといわれるいわゆるシャム猫を含む４種しか今は、残っていないという。その４種に加え、左右の目が金色と青色のいわゆるオッドアイになることで有名な比較的新しい種類のKoa-Mani(又はピュアホワイト）種を加えた５種類のタイ猫の純血種を守っている交配養育施設を訪ねた。
アンパワーの水上マーケット近くにある猫の家に着いたときは、既に閉館時間の１７時を少し過ぎていたが、入場料も取らずに快く場内を案内してくれた上に、何匹かの猫も実際に抱かせてくれて、家族も大満足。ちょうど来ていた、タイ人カップルの若い女性の猫に呼びかける声を聞き、「ねこなで声は万国共通ね」とは、うちの家族の弁。
小さな売店でかわいい土産を買うとともに、わずかばかりのドネーションをしてバンコクに向かった。

According to an ancient document, 23 varieties were recorded as Thai genuine cats. However only four varieties including Wichienmas or known as Siamese can be identified now. I visited a house for genuine Thai cats in which 5 varieties; 4 varieties mentioned above and Koa-Mani or Pure White famous for gold and blue odd-eye are maintained by breeding and nurserying.
Although it was a little bit past 5 pm of closing time when I arrived the cats house, we were welcomed and guided to see the facility and even allowed to hold some of them. My family was very satisfied with their hospitality. My family member also noticed tone and voice of young Thai lady calling for cats was very similar to us.
We left the house and back to Bangkok after we bought some souvenirs at gift shop and made some donation to the facilty.

バンコクから西に車で１時間半ほどのところにあるメークロン川の河口に広がる干潟ドーン・ホイロー。広い干潟では潮干狩りも楽しめ、ムツゴロウが干潟を歩く姿も見ることができる。海岸には新鮮な魚介類が楽しめるシーフードレストランや海産物等を売る屋台も多く、バンコクよりも安く新鮮な魚介類が楽しめるとあって、週末はバンコクから遊びに来た人たちで賑わっている。我々が今回、楽しんだのは、ソフトシェルのガーリック＆ペッパーフライ、エビの天ぷら、それにフィッシュバーガー、　それにシンハービア。

Doi Hoi Lot, one hour half drive west from Bangkok facing huge tidal flat at the mouth of Mae Klong River is famous place for good sea foods. You can enjoy calm digging and watching mudskippers in the tidal flat. Many seafood restaurants and shops are standing along seaside road and many peoples from Bangkok are enjoying shopping and meals since cheaper and more fresh than Bangkok. I tasted fried soft-shell crab with garlic and pepper, deep fried shrimp and Fish-burger with Singha Beer.

陶器の村、ベンジャロン/ Benjarong, porcelain vellage

バンコクから車で西に約１時間、サムットサコーン県にあるベンジャロンは元々は王宮用の豪華な陶磁器で有名。手書きの精密な文様と金の飾りはその値段にもため息が出てしまう。陶器の街らしく、街の壁にも陶器が飾られ素敵な雰囲気。手書きの模様に絵付け体験もできて、ちょっとした思い出作りにも。

Benjaron, famous of excellent porcelain used be produced only for Royal family, located in Samut Sakhon province and one hour drive from Bangkok. Hand painted fine patterns with golden glitters made me speechless but also it was expensive. Walls of house are also decorated with porcelain and it makes good atmosphere in the town. You can enjoy to color on hand painted preliminary sketch on cup for your good souvenir.
