素焼きのカップ/ unglazed pottery cup

素焼きで有名なクレット島では観光客用に屋台で素焼きのカップが売られている。カップに氷とコーラなどの清涼飲料水を入れると、素焼きのカップに浸み込んだ液体の気化熱で、中の飲み物はずっと冷たいまま。暑い中で買い物するには丁度いいし、そのまま持って帰ればよい土産にもなる。飲み物こみで１個２５～３５バーツ（８０円～１００円）くらい。中の飲み物がなくなれば、１０バーツ出せばまた継ぎ足してもらえる。

You can find many unglazed pottery cups are sold at street vender in Ko kret island. The pottery cup poured with soft drinks such as Coke and ice can be kept cold long time thanks to vaporization of penetrated liquid in porous pot. The cup is very helpful for tourist who enjoy shopping in hot weather and it becomes good souvenir after finish soft drinks. The price of the pots are THB 25-35 (approx USD 0.8-1), with soft drinks and ice. For one more drinks, you only pay THB 10.

クレット島/ Ko Kret ; small island

バンコクの北、ノンタブリー県にあるチャオプラヤ川の中州、クレット島。素焼きの焼き物とお菓子が有名な周囲５ｋｍほどの小さな島。渡し舟で渡り、島内の道幅はせいぜい２－３ｍで自動車はいっさい走っていない。自転車が主な交通手段で島内は結構静か、その点では、少しヴェネティアに似ている。バンコク中心部から、路線バスで１時間半程度で、ちょっとした小旅行が楽しめる。路線バスだと、片道エアコン付バスで２３バーツ、渡し舟が２バーツで往復して丁度５０バーツ（約１５０円）で行けて１日楽しめる。バス停から渡し舟のあるお寺の境内まで、人力サムロー（３輪車）に乗れば片道１０バーツ。

Ko kret, a small island formulated by meandering Chaopraya licver and located in Nonthaburi prefecture the north of Bangkok. It is very small island surrounded about 5 km and famous of pottery and delicious sweets. You need use a ferryboat to visit this island and no car in the island since width of the alleys are only 2-3m. It is similar to Venice. From down of Bangkok, you can visit to Ko Kret about 1 hour and half by using a bus on the regular route, a fare of the bus with air conditioned is THB 23 (approx. USD 0.8) and fare for a ferryboat is THB 2, so fare for round trip is just THB 50. If you get a Samurow ( tricycle Rickshaw) from Bus stop to pier in a temple, you need pay THB 10.

スカイトレインのホームの安全柵/ Safety fence on platform of the sky-train

スカイトレイン（ＢＴＳ）のサイアム駅に行ったら、３階ホーム（西方面行き）には、安全柵が設置されていた。いつ工事したのか、忽然と現れた感じ。ドアは開閉しない簡単なものだが、突然の変化に驚かさせる。２階ホーム（東方面行き）は、今までどおりで、このいい加減さというか柔軟さはいかにもタイらしい。地下鉄のホームには以前から立派なホームドアが設置されている。

I found a safety fence was built on the platform on the third floor (west bound) of Siam station of a sky train, BTS recently. For me, it seems suddenly happened since I didn't know any construction even though it is very simple one without door. I am always surprised with rapid change of Bangkok. I also found there is no change on the 2nd floor (east bound), I can see always such flexible and not rigid ways, it is typical Thai style. On the platform of subway, cutting edge platform doors have been already installed.

プルメリア/plumeria

少し前に書いたブーゲンビリアと同じくバンコクで１年中見られる花。現在の呼び名は、
リーラ・ワディー（優美な女性の歩く姿との意）と呼ばれ庭などに植えられている。しかし少し前までの古い呼び名が、「つらく悲しい」等に似ていることから、あまり好まれず、慈悲深い寺院にしか植えられず「お寺の花」とも呼ばれていた。これをシリントーン王女が現在の呼び名に改名したところ人気が出て好んで植えられるようなったという。

Plumeria is one of most beautiful flower blooming all the year like Bougainvillea. Plumeria is now called “lilavadee” meaning of “figure of elegant lasy's walk” in Thai and planted in garden popularly. However, since old name “lantom” sounds similar to “sad” or “painful”, very few people planted this flower except merciful temple, so this flower sometimes called “temple flower”.
After Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn changed it to present name, this flower become popular tree in Thailand.

ドリアンの香り/ Smell of Durian

ドリアンについては去年も一度記事を書いたことがあるが、

またそのシーズンがやってきた。味は濃厚で甘みも強いが、その臭いゆえに評価が分かれるところ。一度この味に魅せられると、食べている時には臭いが気にならないのが不思議。１個食べきる自信がないのと、剥くのも難しそうなので、剥いて小分けになっているのを、マーケット等で購入し、その場で食べることが多い。地下鉄やタクシーなどの交通機関、レストランやホテルも持ち禁止のところも多く、自宅に持ち帰って食べるのは少々気がひける。どうしても臭いが気になって食べられない人にはドリアンチップスがお勧め。

Sine I wrote on Durian once last year, but high season for Durian is coming again. Rich sweet taste is remarkable but strong smell make its popularity very devised. Once you can be fascinated its taste, you may not be worried about its smell magically. I usually enjoy eating some parts of peeled Durian in markets after purchasing the same in the market since I have no confidence to eat whole fruit and to peel it by myself. It is also a little bit difficult to find a place to eat, since many public transportation like taxi and subway, and restaurants and hotels prohibit to bring them. If you don't like smell anyway, I recommend to try to eat Durian chips.

変幻自在 ヴーゲンビリア/ Bougainvillea, flexible and resilient

熱帯性つる性のこの植物、タイでは１年中咲いて我々の眼を楽しませてくれている。赤紫色のイメージが強いが、薄紫、真紅、オレンジ、白色と様々な色を持ち、形も上から垂れ下がったり、垣根のように仕立てられたりと変幻自在。タイ語では太陽に向かって咲く花（フアン・ファー）と呼ばれ好まれている。これだけ変幻自在に姿を変えられるのは、強さを内に秘めているのだろう。東京の初冬の冷たい雨に濡れながらもひっそりと咲いていたこの花を見たときから、どこかこの木の強さを感じたのは間違いではなかったと思う。

We can enjoy flowers of Bougainvillea, a vine like shrub tree through the year.　Although purple red is the most popular colour of this flower, we can find many variety colour such as lighy puorple, dark red, orange and white. They are also taking many shapes like hanging from windows, formating hedges and so on. In Thai language, this flower has meaning of the flower towards sun. The flower can change so flexible and resilient, it is representing internal strength of the tree. As I feel strength and resilient of the flower when I saw Bougainvillea was blooming in cold early winter rain.

スコールの境目/ Border of squall

窓から外を眺めていると、スコールがやってくるのが見えることがある。遠くのほうで白く煙って見えたスコールが段々近づいてきて、ついには自分のところにやってくる。写真では少し分かり難いかもしれませんが、上の写真では、左の方では既にスコールだが、右のほうはまだ降っていない。それが右前まで、雨が近づいたかと思えば、ついにスコールが自分のところにやって来た。

Sometime, I can see a squall is approaching or I can see the border of squall from my windows. I can see white haze in long distance in first, then it is coming and then I am in the heavy rain in the end.
You may not see well in the pictures but rain has already started in left side in an upper picture. Then you can see right side in the middle picture, then as last it is in the middle of the squall in the bottom picture.

昔ながらのアイスキャンディー売り/ popsicle vender in old fashion style

果汁などを入れた小さな筒を、塩水に漬けた氷がぎっしり詰まった桶に入れて作る昔ながらのアイスキャンディー。氷水がどのくらいの温度になっているのかわからないが、４０度近い炎天下でも直ぐにキャンディになっていく。今は、コーラやファンタを筒に入れて手軽に作って値段も４バーツ（約１２円）、暑い市場での買い物で喉の渇いた買い物客には一服の清涼剤。有名なウィークエンドマーケット、チャトチャック市場にて。

A simple and old fashioned equipment for popsicle; many small small cylinder filled with fruit juice dipped in salt water with ice in tub. I am not sure the temperature inside tub, but juice inside cylinder changed to popsicle soon even in hot air nearly 40 degree Celsius. Now, Cola or Fanta can be poured into cylinders and price is cheap as 4 Thai Bath (USD 0.12). For thirsty shoppers in hot market, it is real reliever. At popular Chatchak week-end market.

タイ桜/ Pink trumpet tree; Thai Sakura, Tabebuia rosea

日本で桜が咲く４月頃、薄い紫がかったピンク色の花を咲かせるチョンプー・パンディップ（パンディップさんのピンクの花；花を導入した王族の奥様の名前に由来）。遠目で見ると桜に少し似ていることと、日本の桜の時期に近い時期に咲くことから、日本人の間でタイ桜とも呼ばれているらしい。近づくと花はかなり大振りなうえ、花弁が繋がったまま散ったりと桜とは随分違うが、ピンクの花を見ると桜と名づけるのは、円錐形の山を見ると富士、赤い魚を見ると鯛と呼んでしまう日本人の習性なのかもしれない。

In Bangkok, light pinkish violet flowers of “Pink trumpet tree” bloom in April when Cherry bloom in Japan. Thai name of this flower; chomphu phanthip, meaning of pink flower of Madam Phanthip; (Madam Phanthip is an ancient royal family). Since the figure of tree blooming looks a little bit similar to Cherry from a distance and flower season is similar, it is sometimes called “Thai Cherry” from Japanese people. However when you look it closer, you can see many differences such a s flower of chomphu phanthip is much larger and it all petals drops together when it falls, It could be Japanese nature who call “Sakura to pink blossom, “ Fuji” to cone-shaped mountain, and “Tai; Red Sea Bream to red fish.

鳳凰木/Flame tree (Delonix Regia)

一つ前の記事に書いたゴールデンシャワーとともに、この暑季のバンコクで目立つ花。灼熱の暑さを表わしたような、濃いオレンジ色の花は、まさに熱帯の花という感じ。窓から見ると緑の中に点々と浮かぶ赤い島のようで、熱帯の風景を作りだしている。この花の名前は火炎木だと思っていたが、正式にはタイ語の「孔雀の尾の花」を訳した鳳凰木が正しくて、火炎木(英語ではAfrican tulip tree) (Spathdea Campanulata) は別にあるらいしい。ただこの花を、火炎樹とも言うらしく（英語ではflame treeでまさしく炎の木)、少々ややこしい。興味のある方は、「鳳凰木、火炎樹、火炎木」で検索して見て下さい、いくつかの記事が見つかると思います。

This flower is one of the most popular and eye-catching flower in hottest season in Bangkok as well as Golden shower that I wrote in the last article. Dark orange color like flame is representing impression of hot tropical weather. I can enjoy to look down this flower like floating orange island in green sea from my window The Japanese name of this flower; meaning of “Phoenix tree” in Japanese coming from “Flower of peacock tail” in Thai is sometimes confusing African tulip tree (Spathdea Campanulata) ; Flame tree in Japanese which is also coming from “Orange flame” in Thai.

ゴールデンシャワー/ Golden shower tree

バンコクが一番暑くなり、タイの正月にあたるソンクランになる３月～４月頃に黄色い花を咲かせるゴールデンシャワー。記事にしようと少し調べて初めて知ったがタイの国花でもあるらしい。
タイ語では「ラジャプルック」、あるいは「クーン」と呼ばれ、「王国の花」という意味があるらしい。
黄色は国王陛下の色でもあり、タイの人に愛されている。街路樹や庭木として植えられており、一番暑い時期の人々の目を楽しませてくれる。
常夏の国バンコクにも、ブーゲンビリアやプルメリアのように１年中見られるものと、ゴールデンシャワーや鳳凰木のように、少しの気温の差や雨を感じて決まった季節に咲く花とが面白い。
下の写真は、先月アンコールワットのあるシエムリアップに向かう途中のシソホンという街のゴールデンシャワー並木。

Golden shower tree (Cassia fistula) blooms in March to April, hottest and new year season of Thai calendar, Songkran. I first to know this yellow flower is national flower of Thailand, and called "koon" or "ratchapruek" in Thai language, which has meaning of “flower of Kingdom”. Yellow is also color of King, so Thai people loves this flower very much. Golden flowers are planted in the garden or along road side and give us lovely view during the hottest season.
I feel interesting to know two kinds of flowers existing in ever-summer tropical land, one is always blooming such as Bougainvillea and Plumeria and the other group is seasonal flower such as Golden shower and Flame tree, they might feel slight difference of temperature or humidity.
