バリのクリスマス休暇/ Christmas vacation in Bali

クリスマス休暇を利用して初めてのバリ。少し（８度）だけとはいえ、南半球での初のクリスマス。南十字星は見られるのか、あとでホテルの人に聞いてみよう。

First time visit to Bali using Christmas vacation leaves. Also this is first time Christmas celebration for me in the Southern hemisphere even just 8 degrees. I am not sure whether can I see Southern Cross in this season, so I will ask hotel staff later.

渋滞中の路線バス/ Public bus in traffic jam

バンコクの渋滞に巻き込まれるとなかなか動けない。路線バスも、その中で、なんとか少しでも流れる車線を選んで走る。広い道路では、停留所の場所で、バスが随分と内側の車線に止まることもある。乗客は慌てることもなく、渋滞の車をかき分けて、バスまで車道を歩いてくる。私にはまだ先頭を切って歩く自信はないけれど。

It is very hard to move forward when you are caught in heavy traffic jam in Bangkok. Public bus is not exceptional, bus driver needs to find best lane to move forward as much as possible. When a bus arrives at bus stop, sometimes it happens to be in middle lane of broad road. Passengers needs to walk through car lane for getting on the bus, but it looks usual. I have not enough brave to go through at the head.

バンコクのイルミネーション/ Year end illumination in Bangkok

日本と同じく仏教徒の多い、タイだが１２月になると、綺麗にクリスマスのイルミネーションで飾られる。１２月は国王陛下の誕生月でもあり、また西暦のお正月を間近に控え、クリスマスと国王陛下、さらに新年を迎えるためのイルミネーションが組み合わされている。

In December, every corner of downtown in Bangkok is decorated with year end illumination. Although majority of Buddhist, similar to Japan, you can find eye-catching Christmas decoration in downtown. Since December is King's birthday month and year end of Western calendar, many illumination are celebrating all happy things in combined.

ルンピニ公園のミズオオトカゲ/Water monitor in Lumpini Park downtown in Bangkok

バンコク都心にあるルンピに公園では２ｍ近いミズトカゲが悠然と散歩している。大きいものは３ｍ近くにもなることもあるらしい。その大きさからワニに間違われることもあるようだが、魚やカエル、ネズミ等の小動物を食べる雑食性で、性格はおとなしく、ルンピに公園で人が襲われたことはないという。ただ、唾液には毒が含まれているので、少し離れたところから、のんびり眺めるのをお勧めします。

Water monitors, lizard around 6 feet long from nose to tail, are rambling in Lumpini park located in heart of downtown in Bangkok. It is said to be became almost 10 feet in natural. Sometimes tourists misunderstand as crocodiles because of such large size. However they are not so aggressive and usually hunt fishes, flogs and small animals such as rodents. It never happened human have been attached by them in the Lumpini park. But it is said their saliva contains poison, you may be advised to take a long look from a distance.

国王陛下誕生日・父の日/King's birthday/Father's day

１２月５日は現国王陛下フミポン国王（ラマ９世）の誕生日。国王陛下は全国民の父親でもあるので、国王誕生日が父の日にもなる。約２０万の国民が、国王の誕生日である月曜を表わす黄色の服を来て宮殿前広場に集まって８５歳の誕生日を祝った。街のあちこちで、国王陛下の写真が飾られ、王宮の周りの夜の通りも綺麗にイルミネーションされている。式典の様子はニュース映像で。

5th of December is birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX)　and national father's day since the King is father of all national. Around two hundred thousands people celebrated the King's 85th birthday by attending ceremony in front of the palace with yellow shirts which representing symbol color of Monday. You can see picture of the Kind decorated everywhere and streets around Royal palace are also beautifully illuminated.

マンゴーの幼果とリス/ Juvenile mango fruits and squirrel

１ヶ月ほど前に開花したマンゴーがすくすくと成長するのを窓から見るのが最近の日課になりつつある。まだまだ酸っぱいと思うが、時々リスがやって来て、マンゴーに飛びかかって食べている。IPhoneと私の腕では、なかなか良い写真がお見せできなくてすみません。動画はYouTubeで

It becomes my daily task to watch mango fruits which are glowing day after day from my widow even though they were tiny blossoms just one month ago. I wonder they are still too sour but squirrels come to jump and eat them. I must regret to say my poor skill by my iPhone cannot show clear picture at crucial moment.　Please find a movie in YouTube.

ロティサイマイ、タイ式綿菓子クレープ包み/ Roti saimai; silky candy lapped with crape

パームシュガーを錦糸のように細く伸ばした綿菓子のような飴；サイマイ（綿菓子よりも少し歯ごたえがある）をタイ式のクレープ（ロティ）に包んだロティサイマイ。バンコク市内の屋台でも時々売っているが、アユタヤが本場らしい。バンコク郊外のバーンナムプンの水上マーケットでロティを焼いているのを見かけた。右手の手のひらに乗せた生地の材料を少し鉄板に伸ばし、左手に持った小さなこて１本で手際よく焼いていく。実際の映像はYouTubeで。

Roti Saimai, silky thin candy, Saimai, made from palm sugar lapped with Thai crape, Roti. I felt Saimai was a little bit stronger than usual cotton sugar. Roti saimai can be seen in street venders in downtown of Bangkok but it seems much popular in Ayutaya. I had a opportunity to see a street vender baking Roti at Bannampun floating market at the suburbs of Bangkok. She spreads a part of dough from right hand palm and cooks them with a turner skillfully. Please see movie on YouTube.
